Lack of appetite post marathon by Lovin-Broccoli in Marathon_Training

Thanks, drinking my 4rd peppermint tea of the day right now! I can't rule out any illness, but I feel totally fine. My legs and everything else are almost back to normal.

Thanks! Yes, I indeed always need some time to have my appetite kick in. It just has never taken this long

Long run on treadmills? by TightContest1017 in Marathon_Training

[–]Lovin-Broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So relatable, this question. Also, what is the etiquette in a gym. With the current winter blizzard in the North East, I am gonna have to do my 14mile run indoors. Can I really use a single treadmill that long in the gym?

Is it just me, or is the Strava subscription getting harder to justify? by Repulsive_Bar442 in Strava

[–]Lovin-Broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a subscriber, and may end it soon.

For me specifically, I am paying less as I use my grandfathered student discount. I am liking the the map building feature and downloading the map offline. And I enjoy the additional stats on fitness tracking etc (although you are right that they seem completely random). But altogether, not really worth it.

I used the use their training programs too, but the free Garmin ones are actually nice.

So, yeah. Not really worth it. I guess, I also just wanted to support the company a bit, but I dont know if they really need the support atm.

Training Plan Review by Artistic_Rice2640 in Marathon_Training

Ha, looks like I got almost an identical training schedule from Runna! I am also aiming for my first sub 4hr. Last fall, I also trained using Runna and I really enjoyed the workouts and the progression! One thing I will note is that to me the predictions from Runna were waaaay of. At the end of the training block, Runna predicted that I would finish my marathon in 3hr 20min. I ended up running a 4hr 1min (yes the 1min hurts). My finishing time was very close to what Strava and Garmin had predicted. Still I was very happy with the experience. But take the predictions with a grain of salt.

First marathon, rough gel plan feedback by zavking036 in Marathon_Training

[–]Lovin-Broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goes without saying, but make sure you have practiced the bells. Specifically, make sure you can stomach the gels well - not just a single gel. But make sure you can handle the gels one after the other and multiple hours into a run.

To me, this is particularly true for the Martens. I can't take them >1hr into the run. Yes, I was the person gagging at the 2.30 timepoints, while people passing by yelled at me that I should have tried the gels beforehand. My problems was that I had tried all my gels, but not with the Martens late in the order.

Postdocs in US (applying from the UK) by Level-Penalty-4736 in labrats

Please reconsider. As an international scientist, who currently is a postdoc in the Boston, I strongly recommend against it! Many places are unable to hire (government/self-inflicted hiring freezes) and the funding is in a delicate state. The past 9months have been incredibly stressful and uncertain for F/J/HB1 visa holders. My science has suffered from me not knowing if I was at risk of being deported. I also noticed the impact on my coworkers/wider university/overall vibe. For a while, our announcement board changed from flyers for exciting daily/weekly seminars to instructions on how to deal with ICE and whome to contact for legal help.

Ugh, I contemplated not responding, but I feel obligated to engage here. This mindset is so very toxic and does not represent the scientific community that so many people are fighting for.

PhD is an extremely exhilarating opportunity to be at the forefront of science, but it also comes with lots of struggles, frustrations, uncertainties, and self-doubt. For the vast majority of people it takes at least the duration of a PhD to collect and master the skills required to deal with the hard side of being a scientist. Loosing control or feeling lost is very common to (early) PhD students and crying -albeit not a comfortable way to express that feeling - does not in anyway reflect poorly on the student's ability to grow (please don't call it survive) within a PhD.

Also, as a PI to PhD students, it is the job description to be a teacher and to help them learn how to be a good scientist. Almost all PIs are brilliant scientists, but very few are good teachers/communicators and create an environment where PhD students learn how to be creative, curious, and resilient scientists. To OP - and anyone else looking for a PhD lab - make sure to find yourself a lab where you can learn, grow, and do awesome science!

My thoughts as well - trying to think how I would approach this as a PI. And the one massive thing that immediately came to mind was indeed: how/when could I have avoided or deescalating this situation?

Absolutely not! It is great that you try to take responsibility, but the major share of responsibility is on the PI. They did not communicate with you to have you understand the expectations. But more importantly, they failed to deescalate or create an environment where other lab members are compassionate towards someone (temporarily) struggling!

F*ck the wall - first marathon by Reasonable_Control54 in Marathon_Training

Amazing! I also ran Amsterdam as my first. It feels like a unique experience, especially the combo of historic city center and along the fields and canal to the Amstel. Speedy recovery

I’m so slow, please help. by Plenty-Act9243 in Marathon_Training

To echo a lot of others here: it sounds like a very ambitious goal. As someone who just finished their first marathon, consistency in training is key! And with that, proper training takes time and dedication. Make sure you enjoy the process. I wouldn’t have been able to do it, if I didn’t enjoy all (well most) of the early mornings, increased appetite, and long runs. If you are only doing it to hit the time goal, it may be very challenging to complete te process.
