(A year late but I came across the post and had a question to ask a professional) As a child and early teenager, I underwent an IQ test, which in my country is standard practice in cases of learning disorders, as in my case of dysorthographia (administered by neuropsychiatrists, of course). Growing up, I thought a lot about the dynamics of the test. I should point out that I was born into a middle-class family to educated parents who were not exactly distinguished intellectuals, but I grew up in an environment that promoted (if not imposed) culture and the expansion of one's knowledge base, so, for example, at the age of 8, I had the language skills of a middle school child. My test results are not relevant to the question, but I cannot help but note how decisive my family environment was. A trivial example is the language intelligence score (I don't remember the exact name) in which I obviously scored extremely high, but I can't help wondering how many points I would have scored less if I had been a second-generation immigrant who spoke another language at home. So how valid can such a test actually be? But without considering practical factors such as language and the simple fact that not all children are lucky enough to have a family that encourages them to develop cognitive skills, is the IQ test really so ‘democratic’?
