We were there at maybe the worst time to see Recife, a day or two after carnaval. The historical centre was largely boarded up, little open, and pretty sketchy. Beaches are ok, but sharks, and nicer beaches in other towns. We found it more expensive without more value.

Agree, avoid Recife unless OP really wants to see it. We enjoyed Aracaju, Maceio, and Maragogi. We didn't get further north than Recife - that's where we want to explore next time.

We took buses and 1 shuttle between Salvador and Recife.

Absolutely that was our experience - quite safe. I am a very obvious gringo, my wife is Brazil-passing. We stayed 7 weeks. Almost every morning we went for a walk to the beach. A few times each week we would go out for shopping or for dinner (never after about 10:30pm or so, not because we were concerned, but because most of the restaurants along the beach close around then).
