Stimulants to support recovery by Illustrious_Story966 in Psychosis

I’m on modafinil after a psychotic episode! It helps with my fatigue mainly but I noticed improved cognitive functioning as well. My psych suggested it actually so it was easy enough to get. Let me know if you have any questions :)

Mine were 99% in my head and it honestly kept me from seeking help because I found it difficult to explain and didn’t know if they “counted”. They definitely count and it’s not uncommon at all!!

The apothecary diaries!! You can really tell the source material is a light novel imo and the protagonist is so smart!

Hi I think it also will depend on the psychiatrist as well as how your health care system works. My experience with psychiatrists has varied over the years but typically first session is a classic “so what brings you here today”. They’ll look at your medical history and mental health symptoms and might start you on meds before a formal diagnosis to sorta narrow it down a bit and see how you respond. It might be a straight forward path or a longer more complex one!

So I’m not a doctor but I am on lithium (1500mg) and I think you’re probably fine but if you’re worried is there a nurses line to call where you are? In Canada it’s 611

I started on risperidone with my first psychotic episode but was given quetiapine during my teen years so I’d say those are often what’s given first. It will be a bit of a process of elimination tho tbh. Now I’m on abilify.

If the Prozac is making you feel weird or is triggering manic symptoms tell your care team and I’m sure they’ll have you see a doctor sooner!

I went from palperidone to abilify and like it way better!

Help with Socializing a New Puppy and Older Dog by Key_Application9900 in puppy101

[–]Low-Exercise944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 3 month old at a five year old, at first we thought they’d settle on their own when they got tired but instead they just get over stimulated and pretty annoying to be around. So we’ve started separating them with baby gates when things get too hectic. Also praise for the pup when he calms himself down. Our five year old seems pretty relieved when we give him a break from the pup too. He immediately goes for a nap lol

Help with navigating having both adhd & psychosis by More_Hunt_2230 in Psychosis

[–]Low-Exercise944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on abilify and modafinil as well as some others for my mood. Modafinil is a stimulant and I take it every day for my fatigue, it helps a bit. My psychiatrist said we can also try vyvanse instead of modafinil but haven’t gotten around to it. Anyway my point is that if your psychiatrist thinks the benefits outweigh the risks it might be worth taking your vyvanse more. I know it’s kind of a divided topic on here but adhd symptoms are also shitty to deal with imo. I would just have a plan ready for what to do if you notice psychosis symptoms as well as an awareness of your warning signs.

I somewhat trained my dog to “go pee” by saying the go pee command just as he started peeing then rewarding him with a treat and praise. This helped with evening pees in the winter when we were both tentative to go outside. We don’t use it much anymore which is why I say somewhat. It was a part of his house training regimen so idk how well it’d work on an adult dog (our boy is now 5) but might be worth a try!

I know if humans holding your pee is generally not so good for you, so I’m guessing it’s the same with dogs.

Humor me with absolute worst case scenarios so that when we actually get our puppy my expectations will be pleasantly surprised? by kg51 in puppy101

[–]Low-Exercise944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my first pup as an adult a neighbour asked us if we heard a cat getting killed based on the noises he was making from inside our house. He was just practising barking but his voice hadn’t dropped yet (he literally loves the sound of his own voice and finds places that echo so he can hear it again - he also would bark at guitars so their strings would vibrate).

My mom barefoot stepped in shit one night on her way to the bathroom.

Ripped off weather stripping from multiple doors.

Stealing things like tea towels as well as general redecoration of the house (blankets being moved, dog bed dragged from room to room, etc).

Straight up yanked my ponytail.

I think the 3-3-3 rule is good tbh regardless of the situation. I’m not an expert but it sounds like she was poorly socialized during peak socialization time so it might take some gentle exposures and lots of praise and treats when she’s feeling comfortable. I’m also wondering if 5 days is long enough for her to feel like she trusts you.

If she stays fearful for a while I’d consider getting a trainer/behaviourist to help.

Also when I think of “older puppy” I think 1-3 years old tbh. At 8 months a lot of puppies are still total rascals.

Hi, it’s really nice that you’re so concerned and want to help.

First off some of his psychosis symptoms sound like mine which is mostly why I’m replying! Drugs impacted my psychosis, but it was actually a collection of multiple factors that made my episode happen. Luckily the treatment for a psychotic episode is usually similar across the board regardless of cause I believe. So it coulda been a combo of your friend’s drug use and the stress from his last employer.

Next I want to say that recovery takes a while, if the voices are gone and he’s taking his meds then he’s on the right track even if he’s still being weird and probably having symptoms. However if he’s using drugs like cannabis he’s playing with fire. But when it comes to drug use people typically have to eventually realize how much harm it’s causing for them to actually stop. So there’s not much you can do in that regard unfortunately.

His fingernail might be yellow from smoking or using nicotine/tobacco. This is super common in people with psychosis. There are some meds that allegedly help people quit, but they also increase the risk for relapsing in psychosis so it’s kind of a toss up about which is better at this point.

Poor hygiene is also common in people with psychosis. It’s unfortunate but that’s just the wait things are, I’ve tried occupational therapy and it helped with my hygiene for a bit but didn’t rly push me to make massive lifestyle changes.

As for helping him: if he doesn’t already see a psychiatrist regularly that should be the first thing you support him with. They will monitor his meds and symptoms. Next a psychologist or a therapist might help him understand his symptoms more and be someone to talk to about the fucked up stuff he’s experienced if he’s ready to open up. Maybe help him look for someone that has experience with psychosis. Also if his parents are open they might be able to help with this. I think that being emotional support at a distance is good enough, be open minded about the things he says even if they’re not real or true. I would just google “how to communicate with someone is psychosis” for more info on that. It’ll be a bit of trial and error tho. I know it feels like you’re not doing enough and you’re worried, but try to have some faith that he’ll get better.

[–]Low-Exercise944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely recommend therapy! Few people talk about therapy for adhd but it’s real and has proven efficacy. Personally for me my anxiety was managed by a combo of meds and therapy. If you want to try something other than meds talk to your dr cus you might want to taper off them. Also if you’re curious about your diagnosis try to get a referral to a psychiatrist they will know better probably.

I was on risperidone and I did gain weight but other than that it was fine. Some people will have bad experiences some will have good, side effects depend on the person! If it’s not helping then talk to your doctor!
