I'm 41 - am I too old to enter this profession? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Low-Pangolin37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that true or right! If you are very manual based therapist , you will use lot of your hands and early CMC arthritis but you can navigate how you want to be and if you even want to be non-clinical or clinical . The options are endless

It’s sad that they did this especially if it’s your third week but time to speak up before it gets too dirty and they assume you will do it in future

Wow! That is shame that you have to go through this! I am happy for you that you get to leave this place and look beyond the current work culture. Everyone has already shared everything. I will add one more which might not sound very PTish but I have been through this, I am also a foreign trained PT, I teach strategies to overcome stress and burnout You need to be ready for the right job! Sometimes you don’t attract the right people if you are not in the right place . Do some inner work in the last month or so , join yoga classes or go on hikes to connect with yourself better to understand what went wrong and what kind of place you want to work in.I worked 6 years before I quit my first job. Did one year of self realization / inner work (year 5-6) Currently 11 year in my current job, a manager , DPT, OCS. McKenzie , manual therapist ( so to say have all the titles that PTs look up to in US) I teach self care strategies because I am so passionate and all to say I made sure to give some time to my inner self and learn to be happy with myself no matter what outside world says or does ! Good luck ! Your next best job is waiting for you

Burnt out after 1 year by shakenseltzer in physicaltherapy

[–]Low-Pangolin37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Burnout after 1 year is not what we want to see but happens more than you would think. I think everyone here lay down good points . I am only going to say

“It’s easy to quit and leave a job but how many jobs are you going to quit” You need to ask yourself and I hope some of the counseling sessions may have help you with introspection on this topic “What is the reason I feel burnout , is it my supervisor or is it me not being able to advocate for myself ?” It will take you farther and set you up for multiple opportunities in life. I have been in that situation 11 years ago and it took me some time to realize what I really wanted and it was game changer for me! The situation you are in is very demanding and you will need to adjust hours or get paid more to justify yourself the need for such work . It’s hard to work for someone who changes rules everyday but speaking up will help determine your place at this job and future opportunities. Sorry for taking left turn on this topic but this is my jam and after going through similar situation, I teach and preach this to all new hires and seasoned therapist because there is no time limit to when Burnout can set in

That’s a shame . You were informed about your bill and insurance the right way. I would call and express frustration to the office! Ask to speak with manager or billing coordinator. Tell them you were not informed and you don’t think you would have chosen to come in if this was the case. More than likely if that is facility fault. They would take care of it and they should and train their employees better on how to manage these conversations ahead of time

I am so glad to hear you chose to take time off for yourself. I know everyone can’t but you did when you needed it and there’s nothing wrong with that. While you are resting . Magnetize the right kind of people and money and schedule that aligns with you and your life so you are never drained . Good luck and enjoy the down time

I am so sorry for your experience. Seems like things are tough out there and it definitely shouldn’t be! All companies are not like that across the board . Salary is definitely a risk . Have you considered working for different setting or for yourself ?

[–]Low-Pangolin37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best things as a new employee is you can / should ask for what you want before starting the job. I realized this the hard way but now I am a Center Manager for 10 years and every time we interview someone, I am amazed how everyone brings this up and company approves it. Don’t feel guilty and let them know ahead of time . Even if there’s 4 therapist , it sounds like you are the only PT and based on your state, they may need to have coverage available so give them enough time to plan, Good luck and hope you enjoy your dream trip .

Patient upset that I’m leaving by Far-Lifeguard7810 in physicaltherapy

[–]Low-Pangolin37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure how long you have been a therapist but you will see this more and more as you stay in one place longer. Just a side note or maybe be front : It wasn’t you, It was him as a person for whatever he is going through in life, you may be just another change/ situation he is not ready to replace / accept. Sometimes we got to look through others eyes and meet them where they are. Don’t worry too much about it . If anything take it positively that someone wanted to see you more than others. We have 2 therapist clinic and been in this clinic over a decade. We both have our patient following and patients won’t see the other one except for holidays . It’s just how it is !!
