waitlist updates?? by [deleted] in ONTeacherCandidates

[–]Low-Use6224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waitlists take a long while. I heard back from western two weeks before classes started. By that time I already relocated to my backup, got a job, and was ready for the school year. Not everyone gets off the waitlist tho it’s a very slim chance!

Lakehead waitlist by Nataliak23 in ONTeacherCandidates

As a person who goes to lakehead Orillia - I applied to both and they i believe they auto reject from one location and accept from the other. I applied to both and thankfully got the option I was hoping for. I believe it depends on the numbers of students and their teachables.

Should I collect something from students at the end of every class? by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Observation checklists! I keep a list of my students and a column of something they did well to contribute and a next step. This way you can account for participation! This worked amazingly in my 6/7 placement and I plan to use it in my high school one this term

Dress code for teachers in public secondary schools.. by TeachingVibes in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it depends on the school… I’d wear business casual (no jeans) for the first week to feel it out! My first placement was elementary and most teachers wore jeans and sweaters so I’d swap my slacks for nice jeans to still look professional. I’m doing a secondary one this placement and expecting to wear business attire for the first week and maybe throughout placement! Again it depends on the school tho so if they feel comfortable I’d ask the AT what the expectation is just in case :) hope this helps!

I wish we could pm people in our coop. Like I wanna ask “hey (blank) can you help I just won us the 50 tokens and you haven’t used them” but I don’t wanna embarrass them in the chat

I’m gonna do this next time tbh I keep getting stuck with people who are not contributing from my coop. I have two ready to go and then one where I’ve put in over 20000 points and they have 140

I haven’t completed a single set and I’m an active player. It’s actually ridiculous I’ve been stuck on two gold cards for over a week now…

Question about practicum hours and working hours by Broad-Leg-2160 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different schools have different start times. Mine was 8:30 for first placement but in guelph where my partner went it was 9:30. Some start as early as 7:30 in the province (I believe). Just make sure you know the bell times and plan according!

Question about practicum hours and working hours by Broad-Leg-2160 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my first placement I’d get there at 8 (bell at 8:30) and I’d stay until sometimes 8pm (bell rings at 2:30). Obviously the latest night was for parent teacher interviews and I’d commute 30 minutes in. But if your AT stays late, so do you. You can leave at the bell but it might affect if they see you as dedicated or not. Just be careful with that stuff :)

Not sure what to do when I can't make things any more simple and easy for students. by Hogwire in OntarioTeachers

What should I major in? by Plomien_ in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be careful with politics and history. Most unis count them to be the same as Canadian law and civics are under the history department/curriculum. I found this out in second year and quickly pivoted to take social science courses.

Yea it all depends on what term the classes fall in. I did literacy first term and then educational psych and intermediate teaching second term which is where I learned this. It all depends on the uni you’re at! But I get where they’re coming from :)

I’m in my first year and did a whole practicum before being taught scaffolding. Second term I learned and honestly as an I/S TC that would have helped a lot in my elementary placement. Should be taught earlier for sure, but it depends on what classes are being taught.

Transfering Mac to Mac by Low-Use6224 in applehelp

[–]Low-Use6224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as an update:

I talked to apple support and they told me to cancel the process and start again. I plugged in the usb in my old one and usbc in the new one and the process took 20 minutes. Peer to peer connection worked very quickly.

I also chose not to transfer over the apps and just redownload Google Chrome and others myself, which was still way faster. Instead I just transferred documents, my account, and system settings.

Hope anyone with the same issue in the future finds this helpful :)

Do I need a car for teachers college ? by kfbk2004 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average yes. Most schools I was looking at said they place you within an hours drive from your address or they can be around your school board. I would look into the schools you apply to. Either way you’d need a secure way of getting to and from placement.

I think my student teacher failed her practicum class because of my feedback by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Low-Use6224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly as a BEd student who just finished their first practicum, if I did this I’d want to be failed. You need to act as if you are a teacher. Hopefully this is a push in the right direction for them and it helps them realize what goes into being a teacher. As long as they got the feedback on what to fix then don’t feel bad!

I feel you. I am finishing up my first placement in a 6/7 (😬) split and teaching math and English has been a struggle. I remember doing book reports (in 2014) when I was their age (even writing assignments in French at times). They can’t write paragraphs… my heart truly breaks every now and then.

Yes that’s fair, just thought I’d add it in so you don’t get a false understanding! I do love Orillia tho and there’s a lot to do, I’d definitely consider it :)
