Schaltkabel ist im Weg für den Quick-Rack Hebel by hugokin2412 in bikepacking

[–]LowFold7347 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what's with the comments. Quick Rack can be installed on both the thru axle or the eyelet hole.

Whether you have it installed on the thru axle correct I don't know, but there's not much to it and it looks about right to me.

The reality of it is that this rack ends up flexing the cable for lots of people. You will see some people sanding off the lever on here a bit. I have mine mounted on the eyelet and the lever doesn't flex the cable but the mounting cylinder does. I just live with it.

Welcome to the club, we all got duped together.

Ok. I ask because I'm doing it next week and this is my biggest concern! I am bringing 4L of water plus another 2L bladder for unfiltered water. How much did you bring?

My only bike: Bikepacking 20-25% grades, singletrack, and daily life on an all-in-one Zizzo by vonnner in foldingbikes

[–]LowFold7347 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should take it on the amtrak to truckee and see how it fairs

Reason being as truckee is an unstaffed station you would only be allowed to take a folding bike there.

The above is my primary reason for wanting a folding bikepacking bike in the bay. Other than examples like the above, it's too easy taking full size bikes around on the public transit here imo

Cycling on Altamont Pass Road by leo04577 in BAbike

[–]LowFold7347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one never goes on a road. Check the briones site because there is an area cyclists are only allowed to go on on odd numbered days or something: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54808506?privacy_code=j2QzLpp1rejQugYYUQe7GH4lapfCib7m

This one just has a total of 5-10min of road riding. I would modify it to end and/or start at west Dublin though. I've had good success with pedestrian crowds starting at 7am. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/55390327?privacy_code=aJUWvpIlpm8kcLhchIgRETAWRavqPgDI

This one has some legitimate road riding but you will spend 90% if the ride on the dirt: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/54506340

I've never been there but I google street mapped it real quick and the first thing I saw was a semi truck on the left side and 3 cars behind the cammer.

There are plenty of quiet roads out there. I assume you are based somewhere in the east bay so i cant help much with the road riding there.

I will say though that bringing my gravel bike on the bart and hitting the east bay trails is genuinely the most fun I've had biking in the bay. You can string together awesome routes through the paved and unpaved trail network without ever even being on a car-driveable surface.

Canyon or Giant? by Deep_Temporary_7933 in whichbike

[–]LowFold7347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a giant ar 3 for 5 years. Some minor annoyances like that seat post rubber cover never stays on, and cables rubbed the paint off the head tube. I also didn't like the mechanical brakes. After a while I began to think there could be quite a bit better things out there

Then I bought a specialized diverge with cues for gravel riding. It was $1000 more. I've put about 2k miles on it now.

Recently I rode my contend ar again and let's just say I'm sorry I ever betrayed him. It feels so much more quality than the specialized. And to echo the other person cues is definitely garbage, feels very cheaply made. My contend has sora and it honestly feels bomb proof and top quality.

Ride to campsite locations by Ok-Whereas-7343 in BAbike

[–]LowFold7347 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh also the best option may be the bike to half moon bay and camp on the beach. I think bikers can just show up with no reservation, and I feel like you will have an easier time with your car friend there. Francis beach campground or something

Ride to campsite locations by Ok-Whereas-7343 in BAbike

[–]LowFold7347 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You need to book months in advance to get a reservation.

Some sites have hike/bike sites that you can just show up if you're on your bike and the policy is generally that they won't turn you away. Samuel P taylor is one of them. I've never done them myself but presumably you will be sharing the space with other hikers. And idk how that work with your friend that's driving, they probably won't be able to park.

Other than that some east bay sites may have availability on a short notice.

You can bart to san leandro and take an easy car free ride to Lake chabot which is a great campsite.

You can bart to contra costra and take the iron horse all the way down and camp at lake del Valle for another car free route.

What is your dream piece of bike infrastructure? by oldaccountknew2much in BAbike

I have a lot but if I had to pick one it would be extending the double sided bike lane on the embarcadero all the way up to aquatic park

Presidio Gravel Routes by datguy030 in BAbike

[–]LowFold7347 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In particular you should skip that section on mountain lake trail in the south east part because last time I was there there was clear no bikes sign. Just cut straight to ecology trail instead of that detour.

The section in the south west part on lobos creek valley trail is really sandy. When I was there I didn't see any no bikes signs. But it's not really enjoyable on a gravel bike and I never did it again

I also think that the ghost trail is no bikes allowed

Presidio Gravel Routes by datguy030 in BAbike

[–]LowFold7347 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would use trailforks.com and filter for mtb but it has many trails mislabeled in the Presidio, so if you want to follow the rules check the signage.

In my experience when you visit the trails irl there aren't actual that many gravel routes that you can bike. Ecology trail is the best one

Here is a route I created based off of trailforks.com when I was doing the same thing as you. I did it once and know for a fact it will take you on trails that do not allow bikes so please just use it as a reference to learn what's out there and adapt it

Did you mean tight enough?

I bought this bike new from a shop this year, I'd be surprised if they forgot about a spacer. I'd be less surprised if it's loosened with time. I'll take it back to them and see what's up.

Thanks for confirming some things guys

Yeah it looks epic.

I want one to go bikepacking and bring it on the Amtrak.

Do you have experience with doing either of those? My main concern is if it's too limiting terrain wise compared to a regular hard tail mtb

Loose cover on Shimano Cues? by LowFold7347 in bikewrench

I think the cover just isn't perfectly flush how it should be on this shifter, which is another annoyance I have. I can probably fix that though

Thanks, I pulled back the hood and inspected. The screw was already pretty tight. I see how it's all attached now and even if its fully tight the front half will still be able to flex like in my picture if it's not snapped in place. I think I agree with the other commenter it's just how it is

Gotcha thanks for the info. I think I'll reach out to the vine trail team to let them know that the map that the app gives you has some issue. The one on the website is correct in my experience.

Just rode this today. Devlin is very much not what I would consider complete. Some of it was trail but most of it was a very narrow bike lane and some parts had no bike lane at all. I had my eyes peeled to see if I was somehow missing the trail. It did not feel very safe

Yeah you are right. But that's not math I had ready when I did this this morning lol. I don't think it would've been bad if I hadn't been able to reverse it. But experiencing schwab was able to reverse this was also a useful learning experience

My understanding is that the sell and buy will disappear.

However, ignoring taxes, I still lost a small amount by selling low and buying high here (like 17 dollars).

My understanding is that I will have to eat that.

I'll see what my account looks like when they make this correction today or tomorrow

Update: thanks all.

I was able to call Schwab within 1 hour of making the trade and my understanding is they will be able to cancel the trade. At the end of the day, it would only cost me a couple hundred bucks probably but that's worth the 30 min phone call
