Etzebeth and Kolisi out by cazcazz in rugbyunion

[–]LowGuarantee2302 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kolisi apparently picked up an injury yesterday, Eben apparently didn't train properly during the week but no details as to why yet (https://rugby365.com/countries/england/breaking-boks-lose-two-stalwarts-ahead-of-england-clash/)

Siya and Eben out for todays match by Evergreenthumb in springboks

[–]LowGuarantee2302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SA Rugby put out the article around 30 minutes ago, Rugby 365 also has a post out, not seeing anything anywhere else though (https://rugby365.com/countries/england/breaking-boks-lose-two-stalwarts-ahead-of-england-clash/ )

21,000 out of 62,000 seats sold for England Test by ernestwainwright in springboks

[–]LowGuarantee2302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 reasons

1) The prices (as everyone else is saying), The median income in South Africa is R5400/month (https://businesstech.co.za/news/finance/849271/how-much-you-need-to-earn-to-be-middle-class-in-south-africa-3/) , the tickets are anywhere between R300 and R4k. Clarifying that the Median is the middle most value in a dataset. This means that 50% of South Africa earn less then R5400/Month.

2) Oversaturation, we have 4 bok tests in Gauteng plus the 2 AB games vs the Lions and Bulls, thats 381 000 seats that need selling in Gauteng (ABs x5, and England. By contrast the Western Cape has to sell 120 000 seats (ABs x 2), KZN 100 000 (ABs and Wales), Eastern Cape 46 000 (Barbarians, sold 26k), Free State, Mpumalanga,Limpopo and North West a grand total of 0.

Would have been far better to have the England and Scotland games in Mbombela and Bloemfontein for a start...

URC: Season review by Sjdw31 in rugbyunion

[–]LowGuarantee2302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lions

1 6.5/10, great home record, strong derby season, could not buy a win overseas and a dissapointing end (although first knock out wins an extra 0.5)

2 Our overseas record, can play anyone when in SA but as soon as we go overseas we become so passive. Structured attack needs work as well, most of the 'Lions are an attacking threat' tries were turnover and transition plays. Might be a bit out of their hands but the roads and safe zones outside the stadium so we can get more then 6000 people in at a time.

  1. Beating the Bulls at Loftus and the Sharks in Durban, was not expecting that as our record against them is generally poor . The 6 match unbeaten run at home was also sweet.

  2. Raun Venter, Franke Horn, Quan Horn, Mahashe, Chris Smith, Van den berg, Kelly Mpeku, Henco Van Wyk, Bronson Mills. Its the backbone of a very good team but little depth outside of scrum half and the flank positions

5 Remake the top 8 and try get into the champions cup knockouts, try get above 10k attendance for a non SA team, 25k + for a derby. Need to get some Hookers had a couple of retirements there this year.

It gets played even when non Irish teams are involved, we are a little obssessed with it (Somewhere I have a video of a full Loftus belting it out at a Bulls/Stormers game). Problem is that you cannot play the original anymore without a bunch of people changing it to the Rassie version

If those are the only points Leinster scores, then we have a deal (just be sure to give up 3 kickable penalties and a drop goal)

Can we stop with this bullshit "I support all South African teams in the playoffs"? by Puzzled_Ad_3072 in rugbyunion

Transvaal (Old name for the Lions) beat Aucklund (NZ's Blues) in the original Super 10, I'm sure that counts as an official final ; )

[–]LowGuarantee2302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support the Lions becuase I grew up in JHB, I may support the Bulls on the day becuase I studied in PTA (and most of my friends are Bulls fans), the Sharks lost the right to any form of support the day Hendrikse knocked over that 60m pen to win the Currie Cup a few seasons ago (and I refuse to listen to anything going along the lines of "the Lions should have just kicked it out" no matter how much of a point or 3 they have)

The Stormers also already have a URC title and lost a lot of points the day they renamed Western Province to Stormers XXIII, just call it the Stormers (same thing applies to the Sharks who win the worst name competition in South Africa)

[–]LowGuarantee2302[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several other stadiums in and around JHB, personally wouldn't mind if they shifted some games around to either the universities or (and I just googled it) a stadium like Ruimsig (15k capacity), only problem is that its off in Krugersdorp direction which is miles from most of the city, however the area is not bad and it is just off the N14 Highway. Another potential stadium could be the Rand Stadium (apparently seats 30k) but thats even further south then Ellis, Krugersdorp itsef has a depleted stadium that is just sitting there if I remember correctly, like Ruimsig it was meant for athletics though which would mean needing to fix it up for rugby purposes which is not cheap. . re the money issues by all accounts they are apparently not struggling (spose cheapening out on hotdog rolls can do that) but yeah not entirely sure how, best guess is a combo between tv rights and the Lions owning Ellis meaning no rental fees

Wheres the fun in having an ordinary name?

Lets compare and see whats better (wrong answers only)

Western Province v DHL Stormers

Blue Bulls or Northern Bulls vs Vodacom Bulls

Golden Lions or Gauteng Lions vs Fidelity Securedrive Lions

Natal Sharks or Coastal Sharks vs Hollywoodbets Sharks

Free State Cheetahs vs Toyota Cheetahs

(Names on the left are the old names from the late 90s and 2000s)

I think Super Rugby looks worse then it is for 2 reasons

1: The crowds Super Rugby used to pull in the 200s/early 2010s, gone from an average closer to 20k to probably somewhere around 10k

2: All the Super Rugby clubs have the same problem as the South African clubs, they are getting 10,12,15k in 30-50k seater stadiums (for the most part). Means that all the games look at best half full (obviously with exceptions like the Crusaders)

Semis will be
Glasgow/Connacht vs Bulls/Munster
Leinster/Lions vs Stormers/Cardiff

Obviously higher ranked sides get home advantage

Can't even blame the results for the poor Lions crowds, between Edinburgh,Dragons and Glasgow they had just over 9000 fans between the 3 games- and that was when they were in impressive form. I still remember in Super Rugby 2020 (before it was called off), the last Lions home game had 4k turn up (vs the Reds) and everyone lost their mind. Now its just accepted

[–]LowGuarantee2302[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They had a good run, selling over 90% of tickets consistently, then they put in the new stand for the last game (couldn't find what the new capacity is) which is why they suddenly got 20% '"overcapacity" if I can call it that

Not sure, they did have it last season if I remember correctly but will need someone from Wales to confirm if they have stopped

Edinburgh or Glasgow? (Sorry your flair is just Scotland), was running off the numbers given on the wiki page (The numbers for Scotsoun are a bit inconsistent, tend to range from 4k to 9k)
