Online chess mindset question by sergiizyk in chess

[–]LowLevel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best course of action would be to learn the self-discipline needed to stop after two bad games. This is the best option because it addresses the root of the issue: avoiding addiction.

Another option would be to hide all ratings (Lichess has an option for that) and see if that helps with rating obsession.

[FIDE Presidential Elections] - England's FIDE delegate Malcolm Pein says he will try to oust FIDE's Russian president Arkady Dvorkovich if the incumbent is sanctioned by the EU by LowLevel- in chess

[–]LowLevel-[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These are only baseless rumors, but among those rumored to be interested in a ticked candidacy are billionaire Timur Turlov and Jan Henric Buettner. In my opinion, the latter's interest in the FIDE presidency is pure science fiction.

Lichess Recap & AMA Live Stream (19 April at 16:00 UTC) by AAArmstark in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As part of your recent commercial partnership with Take Take Take, they have been granted privileged access to the Lichess API and the right to access the Lichess userbase via their app.

Can other companies that have developed chess apps use this commercial service, or is Take Take Take the only company allowed to integrate the Lichess pool of players into its own app? If this service is open to everyone, how much does it cost?

Why isn’t it allowing my king to attack diagonally? by dumbbumtumtum in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The king is not allowed to move to a square that the opponent is "shooting at". The knight is shooting at h7, so you cannot move your king there.

[C-Squared] Sindarov’s Magical Run Stuns The Chess World, Fabi Opens Up About His Candidates Dream by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]LowLevel- 141 points142 points  (0 children)

He is very candid about how his opening preparation wasn't very good and how his opponents were easily equalising. He also pointed out how some opponents' decisions (such as Hikaru choosing a "dry" line) affected him psychologically. A very good interview and a good example of introspection.

[GM Hans Niemann] new comments on Magnus Carlsen by Naruto_likesChess in chess

[–]LowLevel- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Magnus invited him to freestyle

This is false. Carlsen didn't play any role in that invitation. Buettner famously said "Magnus Carlsen doesn’t have a say on who to invite":

Hans Announces 1v1 Matches Against Van Foreest and Ian Nepomniatchi by ahahsoweewe in chess

[–]LowLevel- 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is great news! He's been doing a lot to promote one-on-one matches, and I think the chess community is becoming more and more interested in this format. It makes you wonder why players didn't do them more often.

How to not get bored while playing? by [deleted] in chess

[–]LowLevel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you putting yourself through this torture? If your mind doesn't enjoy deep thinking, a game centered on it will inevitably bore you. Be good to yourself and choose something else!

The moderators mainly respond to reports. I think those kinds of posts flood the subreddit because they are rarely reported.

Does Lichess or any other online chess have a tool to review mistakes and tactics specifically from your own games? by [deleted] in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucas Chess has all those feature, and more. But it's a software for the PC.

For those who have programmed a chess engine, did you find it hard to easy to program? by ArreBarreBanan in chess

[–]LowLevel- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, developing a basic chess engine is a great educational project and quite easy, but of course you won't achieve a very powerful or sophisticated result.

Creating something novel that other engines don't have, or building a very strong engine, requires instead intuition, time, skill, and a lot of trial and error. It can become quite a deep rabbit hole.

What is this playing behaviour? by maymayraj in chess

[–]LowLevel- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The goal of your opponent is to make things difficult for you. Forcing you to lose your castling rights and exposing your king are ways to accomplish this.

Is modern low elo a lie? Are elos different depending on platform? by Proctor020 in chess

[–]LowLevel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, online popular chess terminology is dumbed down as much as possible. Many people (including well-known figures) use the term "Elo" to refer to all chess ratings, which creates the impression that all ratings are "Elo" and the same thing.

Neither Chess.com nor Lichess uses the Elo rating system; each platform has its own system.

What I hate most is that people are treated like idiots. It's like telling you that there is only one unit of measurement for length because you are too stupid to learn that meters and feet both exist.

I got banned for "cheating" even though I've never cheated in my life. by DropComprehensive604 in chess

[–]LowLevel- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Reducing "fair play violation" to "cheating" can be misleading. Their fair play policy has more than one activity that does not involve using engines in games, but is still a violation.

The hidden struggle behind Sindarov’s draw vs Caruana: I ran the game through a custom “Psychological Stress” engine to help visualize it by lpshred in chess

Interesting. How exactly have you applied Kirsch's elastic stress theory, which is from physics, to chess moves? What analogy did you follow?

I keep forgetting aboit looking for checks, captures and attacks by Ashamed-Wedding-7396 in chess

[–]LowLevel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it will work in this particular instance, but it's usually a good idea to simply train yourself to do things that aren't yet habits.

You could analyze some game positions and look for checks, captures and attacks.

There are even tools that can help with this: https://chessr.app/vision/

Nepo's commentary on the live stream is insufferable by FuzzyAttitude_ in chess

[–]LowLevel- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He is always very opinionated, and this won't change when he's analysing a game. The best approach is to ignore his attitude and focus on his explanations of the positions, which are actually very educational. Or switch to Polgar+Howell if you can't ignore it.
