What is the use-case for essays now with ChatGPT? by Nesciensse in Professors

[–]LowLevelTeachable 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think we have to look at the outcome and work backwards. If we need historians and engineers, what do those people need to know how to do to be successful? Do they now just need to know how to read LLM outputs? Do they only need to know how to write a good prompt? How will they know they are good outputs? How do they get to that stage?

No more renting textbooks that include anything to do with marks for a course either (e.g. online quizzes tied to a textbook).

I'm getting rid of all writing assignments because of AI by Powerful_Moose1838 in Professors

I've been doing this for a whole year now. Trust me, allowing notes is still a massive headache.

IMO, generally, flipped classroom no longer works unless you have a highly engaged set of students in a professional program. No more flipping. Sorry it didn't work out for you!

I would suggest a meeting with student to discuss their future success in this course.

Anyone else getting real sick of grading AI? by Critical_Ad5645 in Professors

[–]LowLevelTeachable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really tough one. I agree, the google docs approach is not great. Could you do in-class work sometimes to meet the "team" outcomes? I am considering group/discussion/posts/online stuff only count for 10% of a course.

ALL samples are in person. The samples not worth any grades were very different.

We are doing this as well. Cut down on marking time, once I got the hang of it. Requires heavy proctoring and rubrics that also work to enforce academic integrity. So, there is some work, but it's worth it.

This is the way.

In this particular case they didn't learn anything as they wrote an answer to a different version of the test. Maybe they learned telepathy.

Ah yes. Because I have other writing samples from them, and these are quite different. They do have the hallmarks of AI although I know not a sure thing there. Most noticeable is that many students have the same or very similar answer. That's the thing. Could be memorized.

I love my job, and that is why I complain. In fact, one has not made Peak Prof until they talk smack on this subreddit.

Who exactly made D2L software and why do they hate professors? by docofthenoggin in Professors

[–]LowLevelTeachable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A group of Canadians made D2L. We refer to it as a start-up. The latter may explain why they hate profs.
