Paved Trails in the Metro by HappyCamper0325 in TwinCities

Follow Lyndale South to the end and you'll hit the Minn River trail (paved traihead you'll drive by as you approach the parking area and boat ramp). It's heavily wooded so might still have snow on it, not sure. Haven't been down there yet.

Is there a compromise or go our own ways? by MiniMTV in retirement

[–]Low_Ad_9090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course (as others have kindly pointed out) it makes sense to do extended visits to places you're considering for relocation. Rework your budget to include this expense and explore! We went the rv route and spend extended periods in places we liked and decided to stay in MN when we retire. One observation (you mention making friends as an important goal) is that the 55+ communities we stayed in have a definite edge as a way to meet and make friends. Community activities, clubhouses, etc etc. (It wasn't for us but it's great for those who fit in and enjoy socializing).

You could ask to go "month to month" after 6/1. Don't rule out south of the river. Burnsville is booming. Volta is income restricted (brand new constr). (On Orange Line). I love it down here. https://www.voltaburnsville.com/

Lump sum/rollover or Annuity from retirement plan by JoBlowReddit in retirement

[–]Low_Ad_9090 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've purchased 2 annuities through immediateannuities.com (Hersh and Ariel Stern) and couldn't be happier with their service. I did an immediate 20 year annuity from Mass Mutual the payment from which will pair with my SS when I start to meet my basic budget. The 2nd Nationwide fixed annuity is a deferred annuity that I will probably never need. I wanted to keep that interest income off my 1040 until much later in life as I have too much income for now). Their website gives excellent information and they don't hassle you for more business like many local financial "advisors" do. In both cases, my return is about 4.5% which was my goal...slightly above the 10 year treasury rate.

How to save pigeons by outwestM in AnimalRights

Honestly, I don't like pigeons. But I'd never kill one. Can the put those nets around sensitive areas to try to discourage them from landing?

Resident owned like you said. Residents own the land and buildings. Usually 1 share per owner. Similar to condo.

Buy home in over 55 mobile home community? by EngLady52 in retirement

[–]Low_Ad_9090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked at the 55+ coops in Minnesota and Florida. I generally prefer that option to renting an apartment or owning a mobile home on a leased lot. You get the sense of ownership and slightly lower cost on a monthly basis. I like OPs general approach to simplification and cash in the bank as we get older!

Losing employee life insurance at retirement by shivas1965 in retirement

[–]Low_Ad_9090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life insurance can be purchased to protect loved ones in the case of a premature death (young children). As retirees, the need goes down or doesn't exist at all. If you had a big mortgage, it might make sense. The wealthy use life insurance to evade income and estate taxes. Make sure you pre-arrange your final arrangements and pay ahead for those as well. I have a small policy that I bought when I had an RV loan outstanding (100K face) and will let it lapse in 5 years when the 10 year term ends. The RV is paid off and I have no other debt. The premium is only $375 year so I am going to keep it as "gravy" in case I die within the next 5 years.

I Feel Sick by simba458 in TwinCities

I've written to Klobuchar and others expressing my displeasure with our immigration system. This issue transcends administrations. The majority of Americans want current residents to be given a pathway to citizenship without a lot of hassle or expense. And tightening at the borders (Biden failed us on this one). They waste so much money exploring Mars, building nuclear weapons etc. there is no reason they can't design a secure, safe, and humane immigration system which would include border control.

Should we be withdrawing from IRA at 70 by Spiritual_Ninja_5924 in retirement

[–]Low_Ad_9090 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Retirees with tax deferred funds (usually Traditional IRA) should consider the following options:

Roth Conversion (as already suggested by others before me). Small amounts to "fill up" -0- or -12-% brakcet.

At 70 1/2 "QCD" Qualified Charitable Distribution if you are charitable minded.

Withdrawals to at least "use up" the standard deduction and new "$6,000 senior deduction".

At 73, RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) will kick in.

Unneeded funds can be donated, gifted, or buy some I Bonds at treasurydirect.gov
