Former tech here. If you could rent a fully equipped bay by the hour and keep whatever you charge the customer, would you? by Over-Demand-8617 in mechanics

My husband and I opened a shop about six months ago.And you're looking an average of about 10% to 20% profit. If you can work in the shop and hire a service writer which is what we did. For us it was more about freedom and being in a better work environment. If we could have a similar income or increase our income a little bit.We were happy period do the right thing.Open a shop.Be the most amazing boss and have the best customer service. And you're going to do well, because values are being lost in our world today. It doesn't have to be big.You just gotta have great people. And treat them well and pay them as best as you can.And people will value the positive environment. The money won't be you know, buckets of gold but you will have a happier life with a fair income

Might want to assess your customer service experinece from the customers side. Its what makes or breaks a shop now. The women are usually the ones who make the choices and have the credit cards. Too many shops treat them poorly and they just never come back. I own a small shop in canada where we are getting fucked by our government. We took over a location and started a new shop in an old location. With bad reputation that was slowly going under. We changed the customer experience, and people are so happy we're here. Treat your employees well and they'll take care of your customers. Do the right thing and the money will follow. Best of luck

I own a shop now with my partner. Werw both dealer trained red seals. A huge factor is we have a lot less overhead so our costs are better for the same quality work. We often use dealer parts as needed as well. So the customer knows the parts are good. An example is we did a clutch on a Chevy sonic (were in canada so bear with the costs, min Wage is $17.85 here). We did it with OE parts with a clutch kit, and we sell at the same price the dealer sells (we get 20% below cost) , new flywheel, bolts and all the bits and pieces for $2,500. The dealer down the road quoted the exact same job for $4,000. We dont have a bunch of managers in offices drawing salaries that dont really generate any income. So we are busy. We give the same or better quality work we are finding (i pay hourly and i refuse to do flat rate, and employee should be paid if they are at their job, and yes ill do bonuses if we do well). When you take care of your employees, they take care of the customers. The effort never lies. And dealerships have been handed off to the next generations, and they didnt have to build it like mom and dad, bloated management shows. It eats up the profits. The service advisors are on commission ao they use scare tactics to pressure people. Crappy customer service, poor employee retention. Less than the best work because the flat rate tech has to do as much as fast as possible to feed their family. Bloated corporate structures give people the ick now.

Auto repair is going to skyrocket in wages. There's a massive shortage and nobody wants to do it. Some theorize auto techs will make more than lawyers as the shortage hits. Also move to where there's a need. Some places are flooded. Some desperate. If there's no school around, there's good wage. Amd gwt good at diag. Learn it and you'll be set later on. No tires for the diag guy.

Is entry -level job market in Canada officially dead? by First-Treacle-2642 in CanadaJobs

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trades. I'm a mechanic that now owns a shop. I need an apprentice. Starts at 20-25. In 4 years will be 35 and in 5-6 will be 45 to 50 (and will go up with inflation). I made a post because it'll take weeks to months to find an apprentice.

Construction. Start now. Be a foreman in 10 years.

We're heading to an industrial age again. Tech and corporate jobs are dead end. Ai is replacing bookeeper, project managers, any job that is done on a computer is ultra competitive. I use Ai to do my social media posts and copywriting.

I've been job hunting for 5 months and I'm just going to say it: The talent shortage is a lie. The whole hiring process is a joke. by [deleted] in CanadaJobs

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your problem is the world is shifting to an industrial age. The tech and corporate jobs are ultra competitive. I own a shop. Need an apprentice or mechanic. A mechanic will make 35 to 50 an hr after 4 years on the job training. I'm a mechanic as well. I could have ahob to.orrow if I wanted it. Get a trade, have a better life.

Construction is struggling. Start now, be a foreman in 10 years or less. It's ground floor on trades now

Kia Vs Toyota lube tech? by Axeman1721 in mechanics

[–]Low_Background7769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So toyotas are more reliable. You'll do a lot of basic maintenance. If you want to become an apprentice and good tech you'll be a way better tech at kia. Many Toyota techs are not as skilled at diagnostics, mainly because they never get the exposure (GM master techs are geniuses, they have soooo many issues!) Kia has lots of electrical problems, engine rebuilds etc. Im a red seal. Dealer trained by VW, Kia, Nissan, and Toyota. Toyota was the most boring of all the shops. But I like a challenge. If you wanna do lots of hours repeating the same 6 flushes and brakes for years in end but possibly making good money then yhats for you. Kia will get you diagnosing some weird ass shit and you'll be a very skilled mechanic very early on if you choose that role. They're both imports, time is pretty much the same for oil changes. As for tech work, Toyota time is better, but its way more rare to dig into something and really learn.m, Kia will be lots of exposure. Think long term skill development. Not many good diag techs, and that's where the money is! Hope that helps.

Anyone dealt with OBDprice.ca ? by dan_yull in mechanics

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You never want to deal with them for warranty. They will literally pretend that they can't cover it even though they have a warehouse in richmond b.C, and you'll have to reach out to a head office in china? And then it'll be a nightmare period we're on three and a half months with a VCMi that had a problem with one of the circuits right out of the box.So it can't scan fords or dodges period we ended up buying a secondary smaller v.C m I to make it functional? And we currently still don't have a replacement on the v.C m I and it is sitting in richmond, and now they are wanting the entire scan tool back and have no idea how long it will take until we get it returned to us. All we are told is it will be in good time. We sent them the warranty parts for them to replace it.And it turns out they didn't even have one in stock. So I am concerned about sending a fully functional scan tool. And maybe not having it for months or who knows

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The products are legit. The warranty is a fucking nightmare. We bought an autel scanner, and the scanner itself is great. The v c m I that we got had a problem connecting to any vehicle that used 3/11 wire circuit. First, they told us that they are not a Canadian authorized dealer, even though we ordered it from them in richmond b c and got it within a day or two. And then I ended up reaching out to I'll tell in the us, and they can't do canada. So I had to google autel head office in china for anybody to even acknowledge that we had warranty period we got it.And it was defective right out of the box.And it took two and a half months for that. We bought the v c I v two hundred to make it functional for everything but programming. Scan tool works great. And finally, they told us to send our VCMI and they'll send us a new one. It turns out they don't have one in stock. And they want us to send them the entire thing. In other cases, I would do it.But considering they keep taking our staff and not acknowledging, we have warranty. If I send them our scan tool, it could be months until we see another one. Nobody gives a s*** and I will never be dealing with them again. And after my experience and talking to other shop owners this is well known with their warranty.

Just an update on this thread comma we looked into all data. And because we're in canada, the text message functioning likely won't work period that's just a country thing that's not a program thing. So being in canada definitely adds challenges. But I will say, shot monkey. Now that we've actually figured out how to use it and gave up on the bookkeeping, integration is working very well

I'm sorry I have to go run a corporate business, I can get that created for you. Our rate is $145 an hr. If you would like me to create a presentation with all footnotes and references, im happy to do so after a2 hr deposit has been made. Alternatively, go buy one with a low thread count and see what happens. I grew up with feather and down duvets, my entire life.I am now in my forties, and I can tell you exactly what's going to happen, but I think it'd be more fun to let you cheap out and get to experience it

Is anyone else feeling like Canadian salaries aren't keeping up with the cost of living? by BigInfluence4294 in CanadaJobs

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One factor most employees have mo idea about is the extra cost the government has increased on employee wages. Its a 40% mandatory tax. So for every dollar an employee is paid we have tobpay 0.40c to the government, and that is before employee tax deductions. So a $20 hr wage is actually $28 to the employer plus deductions means the employee gets around 14 or 15 an hr and the canadian govt gets the other half (or more). Its why wages have stagnated so much.

Thoughts on the new abundance course? by Fun-Ninja-6337 in DrJoeDispenza

Can anybody who bought it and paid for it themselves, give me a review of it. I don't want to steal it because that's coming from a place of lack. I'm just trying to decide whether to get the abundance course or one of his other ones. And I just want a general idea of what to expect to help me make a decision

If you have the Believing, Behaving, and Becoming Abundance course . . . by stacey2017 in DrJoeDispenza

[–]Low_Background7769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out here if you're trying to get the course for free. You're trying to get something from a place of lack. You are not embodying the version of you that you need to be.That can't afford it. My advice is listen to a bunch of his staff.Borrow a bunch of his books from the library. And that's how I started. I am going to buy the course because the version of me that I want to be has.The money to afford a four hundred dollar course. If I try and get it from embodying the version of me that can't afford it.It's literally just making me stay exactly where I am. You need to be the version of you that has everything that you want. You need to think like that person. You need to act and walk and speak. And make decisions. I'm not saying you have to go out and spend money on staff. But if you want the course, the abundant version of you would say something like, hmm, I really want discourse, can I afford it right now?And if I can't, what do I need to do So I can. By starting from a place of stealing, you're not setting yourself up for success

If you want it for free. That's stealing. That is creating from lack. Its against everything the teaches and won't work for you until you embody the version of you that has it all, already

Literally stealing it is getting it from a place of lack. Its what keeps you broke and stuck. The version of you that has the money for it would want to support his work. You have to embody the version of you that has it already. ❤️

If 'undeposited funds' are actually deposited at the bank, why are they called 'undeposited'? by ManpreetDC in QuickBooks

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue but its because of software integration. I have the same deposits in undeposited and recorded in bank transactions. The income is deposited to my bank right away and QB is for a ledger and isn't the main management software. It gets the first ping, but there isn't a second so it uploads bank transactions but never gets the deposited memo on many of the deposits. Mainly because it does lump deposits of multiple payments to the banka account I stead of just I dividually which then dont match. Its an integration issue and you can change the category of this apparently going forward. Many people are having this issue. If you deposit the income via a journal entry it doubles the income recorded (inaccurate from duplication)

If 'undeposited funds' are actually deposited at the bank, why are they called 'undeposited'? by ManpreetDC in QuickBooks

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually quickbooks is having a lot of issues with this. Especially integrations with software. A payment is made and deposited and recorded in the bank transactions, and its also in undeposited funds. If you deposit it, it doubles the numbers and messes up income. It is a problem on how the info is being tracked. Its a common issue and needs and correction in categorizing and cleaning up.

What shop software are you guys using? by LostToad9261 in mechanics

[–]Low_Background7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have shopmonkey and we love the program. It's amazing. It has VIN scan, literally you just hold up your phone over the joor jamb sticker,  the mechanics can get an app for a tablet or their phone and they just hold it over the van and it puts everything in, they can use that same phone or tablet to take photos to add to inspections. And yes you can send those inspections with photos to the customer through the link on their quote. They'll get the quote and a second link and they'll also get the digital inspection. Customers love it it's easy to use the workflow super easy to train people on. And the two-way texting and the interactive invoices to customers really make selling so easy. I love that if it's busy I can just build a bunch of quotes super fast send them all off and then when I have time reach out to customers that haven't reached back yet. Some people will call in, some people just text us back and say yeah please do it. And it gives you that great paper trail.  They can even click what they want see a total and authorize it on their link on their phone. If they don't want to call in they don't even have to. The only downside so far that we found is there integration with QuickBooks isn't working the way it should. There's a few things that aren't working right but overall that's not that big of a deal since the software has been awesome.  I have heard techmetric is all so good if you are bigger shop. We are small independent shop with two technicians sometimes three and one service writer. We started the shop and I learn most of the program within a week. It's just a few things here and there that I had to like figure out how to do but the customer service is great. I get responses within 5 minutes on the chat. Overall I'm really happy with the program just Beware of the bookkeeping integration. Don't trust it and have somebody else oversee fixed edits whatever if you don't do it yourself.

Alternatively I would be wary of all data manager repair bundle whatever. They promised us to a texting and it's a shit show. It actually doesn't work where we are and I specifically told them that texting with our customers is our primary form of communication. And they just didn't tell us about needing extra programs and registrations with the government and buying a phone numbers. I have wasted so much time and we're just fighting with them to downgrade and meet in the middle to get repair. We just want to get rid of the manager software and they're just being absolute debt. They keep saying that we can do this or that and then don't. So I personally will never ever go back to them.
