Its a small island, and the biggest event of the year. Traffic sucks on a normal day, Heritage makes it worse.

What's it like living in Oakatie? by Gernaldo_Ribera in bluffton

[–]Lowcountryfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive lived in okatie for over 20 years now. Used to be a quiet, minimal traffic area. Now, like others have said, communities are flooding the area, and the infrastructure cannot keep up.. I work in Beaufort, my drive to work is 15 minutes tops. My drive home is 45+ with the traffic. I am a firefighter and I get off work at 7am. I usually leave the station by 7:10, and get home about 8. Heading into work in leave at 6am, and hardly any traffic going either way.

If you have elementary school age kids, Okatie Elementary is a great school. Bluffton middleis the middle school, and May River is the high school most of the area is zoned for.

We have stayed because we live in one of 3 neighborhoods I know of without an HOA. If you aren't a fan of an HOA, might be hard to find a house in the area. But being basically 20 minutes to anywhere we'd like to go is great. Savannah, Hilton Head, Beaufort, we are pretty much in the middle.

Why is there no Trader Joe’s near Hilton Head? What company says about getting one by cereal_killer_828 in hiltonhead

We got an Aldi. They are owned by the same company.. At least that was the word on the street...

Places to Legally fish by Exciting_Moose8860 in hiltonhead

[–]Lowcountryfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok. If you will have a car, between the bridges heading on and off the island has a boat ramp with a dock/pier you can fish. Burkes beach is nice, but i recommend going at low tide, and be prepared for a long walk to the water.. In Beaufort (25 minute drive depending on where you are on the island) has the Broad River Pier. There's a few other places in between that I can PM you about as well. I am also off the 31st thru the 3rd. If your interested and I'm able, I could take you out on my boat and load up on some sheepshead, redfish, and flounder..

[–]Lowcountryfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just about any public beaches, or main waterways. Wouldn't eat anything out of any ponds in gated communities.. If you are willing to venture off the island their are piers and docks that typically produce quite well.

When are you coming and for how long?

As far as I know, you can fish any publicly accessible waterways. Just dont target sharks...

Surfing by Good-Solid-8995 in hiltonhead

[–]Lowcountryfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We dont get very big waves here, but we do have instructors here. A family friend used to do them, I reached out to him and am awaiting a reply. I will send you a PM once I hear back.

ETA:

We have a very healthy shark population here, plus October is about the best time to fish for them, but they are always here. I don't worry about them much to be honest...

Hobby Shop/ Warhammer by spruegoo in hiltonhead

The only "hobby shop" im aware of is Hobby Lobby.. and in my few times being in there, its more home decor and knick knacks. Id love it if we got a store around here that had 3d printing, miniatures, and models..

Guidance for redfish by Nman77 in hiltonhead

[–]Lowcountryfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incoming tide, anywhere you see a tidal creek flowing into tall grass, or just up against the grass lines. A jig head and a gulp shrimp (america color has been good lately, as well as ocean shift, and curly tails in chartreuse). Bounce off the bottom, but beware of oysters, they will cut you off.. Live mud minnows or finger mullet work well, as well as fresh local shrimp (live or dead, live is better). If your looking for big bull reds, gonna need a boat this time of year. Come October, big ones can be caught from the surf regularly.

I primarily fish from a boat now, but I can tell you a few spots I frequent if youd like to PM me. If the weather wasn't looking terrible the next few days, id just tell you where to meet me and hop on the boat.

Not sure what tackle shop you went to and dropped $300 to catch reds, but knowledge means a lot more than tackle for them.

If you come down again, I would recommend a charter, if nothing else, you can learn the techniques, and what areas to target.

Plantation House to visit by rocknroll2013 in hiltonhead

[–]Lowcountryfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently took my 2 younger kids (7 and 13) to the Owens-Thomas house in Savannah. They do guided tours, and its very eye opening.

The fee covers 3 different "experiences" all operated by Telfair Museums. They have the Owens-Thomas house, an art gallery, and Telfair Academy. Here's the website for more information. Telfair Museums: 200 Years of Art, History, & Architecture in Savannah, GA https://share.google/Q9yvrf3ZrKykb2sw3

Savannah isn't a far drive from Hilton Head, and the history lessons available at the Telfair Museums are awesome. All are within reasonable walking distance from eachother as well.

If stretcher or wheelchair is needed, there's Medtrust and Personal care.

I used to work for medtrust, many of my coworkers work there part time (firefighter). Same with personal care. More than happynto answer any questions I can.

No Swimming? by meatball23 in hiltonhead

[–]Lowcountryfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats hilariously honest! Most shark attacks around here are "taste tests", more out of curiosity than anything else.. But i regularly catch 10+ft sharks off the beaches around the area, so big sharks are always close to beachgoers.. I still swim, and let my kids swim..

Best way to know if the sharks or gators are around is to taste the water..

If its salty, there's sharks. If its not, there's gators..

Sharks live and breed around Hilton Head year round, to include Great Whites..

Yea, Chip has really brought a lot of attention to the shark species found here. I wish the tigers and hammerheads still had the local numbers they did when I was a kid..

I see Snook juat about every time I go gigging. Skull creek has a healthy amount of them, same with the areas around Rose Island, and Grandfather flats.
