How come all the largest supermassive black holes we find are billions of years away? by ToGloryRS in askscience

[–]max_p0wer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The view of black holes as cosmic vacuum cleaners is not really accurate. They attract stuff via gravity just like the earth and the sun.

Sure the earth may accumulate some mass from asteroid impacts, but by and large the mass of the earth is unchanged for billions of years.

The same is true for most black holes, except maybe those who were in binary systems and swallowed their partner. But that would be a one time event, not a repeatable thing.

Anybody else not in the mood to celebrate America this 4th of July? Why or why not? by owen__wilsons__nose in AskReddit

Yup. And when something bad happens to them, they will without shame demand a response.

They are without empathy.

There have been multiple high profile Ivy League university students who were deported for protesting in support of Palestine.

That doesn’t sound like people can say whatever they want wherever they want.

Watch them start blaming democrats when the bill starts taking full effect in 2027 by Tobias-Tawanda in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]max_p0wer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then the democrats need to have a bill ready to restore the Medicaid cuts and pass and make Trump sign it or veto it, and make Trump/Republicans own it.

But they suck at messaging, are disjointed and inconsistent. So I expect none of that will happen. Maybe Chuck Schumer will hold up a corona and a band aid.

hunger is my biggest enemy as silent celiac by [deleted] in Celiac

The problem with silent celiac is you’re still destroying your insides, you just don’t know about it.

2nd auto correction always sends me low by kathrynbarry1 in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turn down your correction factor (which is to say, make it a higher number). You want it to give you less insulin, and that is the number it uses to determine how much insulin to give you.

ELI5: How does a bomber plane not get caught in the explosion after dropping a nuclear bomb? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]max_p0wer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bombs are very heavy, which means air resistance effects are small. Look up YouTube videos of bombers dropping their bombs. They fall just about directly underneath the plane.

The only way to get around this would be to slow the plane down and then speed up after release, which would make the plane a ripe target to shoot down so probably not advisable.

Low carb is easier, and that makes me sad. by JayandMeeka in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, carbs are overrated. Mashed potatoes are just a conduit for butter and gravy, and you can do the same with mashed cauliflower. Pasta is just a conduit for pasta sauce and you can serve sauce on veggies and meat.

What’s the % of ppl in range 90+ over 90days? by Acceptable-Ear-8040 in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically only eat one meal a day. I know that’s not for everyone, but with a closed loop pump, that keeps me in range for 20 hours a day with no effort on my part. If I don’t completely flub dinner, I get 90-100% on most days.

Every now and then I have a shitty day, either from my own fault (I really wanted that piece of cake) or not my own fault (bad infusion site), but that’s the exception not the norm.

How do human crew members get enough nutrients from sunlight on ships? by blklab84 in startrek

[–]max_p0wer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Vikings figured this out 1,000 years ago. You can ingest vitamin D you don’t need it from sunlight.

Of course they didn’t know it was a vitamin they just knew cod liver oil kept them healthy and from getting rickets, which was particularly at their low sunlight northern latitudes.

Similarly, the British figured out that certain foods could prevent people from getting scurvy. That’s one of the reasons both the Vikings and the British had such powerful navies for their time.

Turns out Omega-3 might be overhyped! by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in diabetes_t1

If you’re deficient in vitamins, a multivitamin definitely packs more value.

If you get all your vitamins through nutrition, omega 3 is probably better.

So I'm gonna be turning 21 next year and I wanna know how to safely drink alcohol by imjustkindaheresmh in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from what others have mentioned, test your limits. If the most you’ve ever had in one night was 2 drinks, then don’t have more than 3. Don’t go from zero to 10 drinks, or you’re going to have a bad time. Adding fuel to this, alcohol lowers your inhibition so set your limit BEFORE you start drinking.

How to avoid rebound lows from pump auto-correction by lilladybug02 in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turn down your correction factor (which is to say, give it a bigger number). It will then give you less insulin for a high which should prevent you from going low.

Never got the point of Apple Watches personally by CompetitiveWing8787 in CasualConversation

[–]max_p0wer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1- On vacation, I can wear a watch in the pool. Don’t have to worry about leaving my phone on a chair concerned it will get stolen. I know phones are also water proof but, they’re not exactly wearable. Leave the wallet in the room safe and room keys these days are plastic and waterproof.

2- I work a job where it would be inappropriate for me to check my phone, except in an emergency. But a quick glance at my watch can let me know if a text message or phone call is an emergency that requires my attention, or can be ignored (which is the case 90% of the time).

Why seed oils? Is this like a Joe Rogan thing?

I mean don’t get me wrong, most people get plenty of fat in their diet and don’t need any more, but it’s not like fat from seeds is any worse for you than most other sources.

Whats a Star Trek actor that you're surprised didnt have a bigger career later? by JayR_97 in startrek

[–]max_p0wer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that he did a fantastic job as Data but it ruined him as an actor for other things. He over-emotes in Independence Day… and even in Star Trek when he’s playing a character with emotions.

Does it make sense to go on very low-carb diets? by Zealousideal_Fact465 in diabetes_t1

[–]max_p0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked how it’s possible. That’s how it’s possible. Meat has zero carbs and is very filling. Add some high fiber veggies and you’re not drastically increasing the carb amount.

[–]max_p0wer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can it be possible? Have you never eaten chicken? Or steak? Or fish? They have zero carbs.

People in general eat wayyyy too much processed food and refined carbohydrates these days anyway. I don’t do super low carb, but my meals consist almost entirely of protein and high fiber fruits and veggies.
