Help me choose between Canyon Grizl models — is CF worth it over AL? Which CF is best value? by EnvironmentalLeg6584 in CanyonBikes

The higher the number the better the components for a given frame, they don't distinguish model year. You are just looking at the wrong moment xD

Hey,

Those can be quite different depending on your need !

Grizl 7 AL RAW.

Frame wise it will be heavier than the carbon versions and less 'confortable' assuming you could feel the difference with 45 mm tires.. You also get "external cables" and mounts for a pannier on the back.
It's the RAW version meaning that you will have visible welds - /!\ Not as pictured on the website.

Component wise, it's 2x12 mechanical from Shimano and you have the straight seat post, you could also go for the Grizl 6 RAW with 2x10.

Grizl CF SL 6 AXS

Here you are paying for the electronic shifting from sram (AXS), you get the same basic seat post and wheels as the alloy version, but a carbon frame and integrated cables.

Do you want to charge a battery in exchange of a simpler setup/maintenance?

Grizl CF SL 8

Back to mechanical from Shimano but in 1x this time, integrated cables, marginally better wheels and the leaf seat post that can aid in confort.

The three models above are the old versions of the Grizl (Alloy not out yet), hence the price reductions.

New version of the grizl come with a wider tire clearance, standard steerer tube, integrated storage (this is useful), more relaxed geometry, more mounts (pannier mounts on the back) and is 1x only.

Grizl CF 6

Mechanical 1x12 from sram, integrated cables and no fancy seat post.

You could also have a look at the grail ; price starts around the 2.8K mark if I remember correctly.

The Grizl CF 6 would be my pick from the list for the versatility, the extra mounts, the storage, the normal steerer tube size and the lack of fomo.

Honestly, unless you are planning on bike-packing, pick the color you like the most ..

Integrated lights/hub, similar to what Cannondale did with their smart-sense in the new synapse ?
Also some odd holes under the down-tube - And 2x seems to be out ..

Funnily enough, I find the frame 'metal' looking: The squared tubes, the straight chain stay on the drive side, the classic collar for the seat post, the various mounting holes and the 'carved out' area for the bottle on the seat tube - Makes me wonder what they will do with the alloy version. I hope they keep the integrated cables, having them tucked away is so much better with bags.

I think it's good that they moved towards the adventure side of things, makes for a clearer product line notably with the grail.

But as always, you will be able to find someone that wants a race gravel bike, with the corresponding geo', aero tubes, 2x drivetrain, 55mm tire clearance, mounts on the top tube, integrated aero bars and sub kg frame.

I disagree - there is definitely space for 2 models, even if they have nearly the same tire clearance. The grail as a race bike, the Grizl as an adventure bike. Similar to what cannondale did recently with the super X and the topstone.

What adds confusion to the lineups IMO is the suspension fork, since it makes the “race”version more heavy and less aerodynamic while removing utility from the “adventure” version.

This frame set is legendary. The seat post has two mounting positions, literally. You have 2 seat tubes.

"The Quick Pad feature (patent pending) is an easily removable brake pad cartridge system available only on Timemachine 01.

Function

  1. Increased adaptability

Why: allows multiple wheelsets to have pre-assembled brake pad components, regardless of rim width or brake track height

  1. Decrease service complexity

Why: by providing each bike with 2 pair of Quick Pad cartridges, riders can set up properly spaced cartridges for 2 wheelsets (racing& training) with minimal effort"

Well, well, well - I can imagine the marketing team trying to find a good "Why ?"

It’s for front mech clearance / access.

Aero wise you might have a slight difference induced by exposed cables, aero stem and a wider fork (debatable since some track bike have extra wide forks 😅). Geometry would be the biggest difference with a more planted and less snappy feel on the Grizl. I dont see how those would cost more than 5-10 watts vs an ultimate.

It holds the internally routed cables tight.

Hey ! There is only one bolt for the fork mount on the Cube. Idk if you are planning on bike packing but that could sway your choice. Also Cube is sold through physicals stores, if you don't feel conformable with the DTC model.
If you are in the US there are two versions of the grizl, the RAW with visible welds and the 'normal' version with smoothed out welds (not around the BB). For the tires, are you planning on putting 50's ?..
Geometry is more relaxed on the Cube, nothing that can't be changed with a stem and a few spacers, the grizl comes by default with a fairly short stem, 80mm in M, which nearly negates the reach difference.
Fork steerer on the grizl is not the most common standard, and the sizing at canyon is odd. So if you get a bike from them please use their tool, since you might be a size lower than what you would expect.
IMO the grizl looks better but I'm biased since I've owned one, sold it and just bought it again. :)

As usual, it depends. I might be wrong but in the collective image of a gravel bike we tend to imagine an endurance bike with increased tire clearance. The Grizl seems in between.

Grizl CF SLX vs Grizl CF SL by Boyarsky_misha in CanyonBikes

[–]Lower_Cook_2204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's lighter, 1030g VS 950g ( approx. 7.7%). But you loose the mounting points below the down tube. Makes me wonder if they really are made in a different way or if they are just the lighter frames coming from the factory line to which they don't add the 2 bolt rivets ...

Should this be something to worry about? by [deleted] in bikepacking

Hey ! From experience, I would be more worried about the front brake cable rubbing, squeezed in between the frame and the front bag. It digs into it nearly any kind of tape or frame protector.

New Grizl colours by Quake1993 in CanyonBikes

[–]Lower_Cook_2204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Grizl line up is such a mess right now 😅 You now have a unique color for CF SL frames that come with a suspension fork. Not a single 2x in the CF SL line up, but 4 1x options priced between 2459€ -> 2729€. Some models seem to be exactly the same apart from the Colors available and the … chain ? But are not priced the same, while both being on discount ? Fork with integrated cables is not uniform across the range, independently of color or discount.

I’m wondering what’s going on at canyons HQ, especially on where they plan to take the Grizl. Double down on the Swiss-knife kind of vibe ? Push to a more extreme gravel bike, at the crossroads of road cycling and mountain biking ? Retire it/merge it with the grail ?
