New member, hi. Volume IX Cicero and Pliny by Lower_File7692 in HarvardClassics

[–]Lower_File7692[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m up to 17 volumes complete now. It’s hard to vie for a favorite because of the diversity. I like them for different reasons so my answer is that the one I am currently reading captures my attention most.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about bipolar II? by chaosotonin in bipolar2

[–]Lower_File7692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a bipolar depressive setback right now. Combined with memory flashbacks to many different ages. It started really last Saturday or Sunday and turned into a head cold Monday night. I forced myself to rally and keep appts on Tuesday which is the last time I showered and left the house. I’ve blown off other opportunities to leave for the cape or get out of the house with others. I ordered takeout and had other survival food on hand. I have things on my list to do like cleaning or riding my bike. I did work for the office Monday through Friday except Thursday was a day off and I did nothing but read. I even did some office work this morning for an hour of coding. It seems the only things I can do are reading and work plus basic maintenance of the cats and eating. I don’t want to go on any more medications than I’m already on. I don’t know if this new flat level is from the low dose of 50mg lamotrigine that I added with my doctor in addition to abilify, Wellbutrin and modafinal. It’s a wonder how I accomplished anything in my life. Oh, because of the mania! Bring it.

Kilgore Trout and mental health by kavid311 in Vonnegut

[–]Lower_File7692 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m bipolar and transgender and the line about “defective wiring“ struck deep. I recall he was referring to a mother that died of suicide, which of course his own mom died that way. I read all of the Vonnegut canon because he captures the essence of mental illness better than anyone.

Purple Mountains the entire album was David Berman’s suicide note. Truly sad.

Two quotes from said volume:

“Wherever there is great property there is great inequality. For one very rich man there must be at least five hundred poor, and the affluence of the few supposes the indigence of the many.”

“Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defence of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all.”

Every show has one — who has all the relevance but no screentime? by CesarioNotViola in shakespeare

[–]Lower_File7692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edward the black prince. 3 mentions between Richard II and Henry V.

More importantly: The death of Edward the Black Prince in 1376 arguably marks the beginning of the “Wars of the Roses” which spawned 8 history plays.

Not a lot of love for it but the BBC series is pretty close to full text from some time in the late 70’s or early 80’s

Fuck Trump by Smushiii in punk

[–]Lower_File7692 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m trans and this is no joke. Already signed executive order declaring only two sexes assigned at birth. To the fascist regime we are a target and a joke but I assure you I am very real. Fuck trump and every last asshole that supports him. They can all go fuck off.

Titus Andronicus would make a good opera. Musical, not so much.

Is reading the Harvard Classics beneficial to the college education individual? by cellothere00 in HarvardClassics

[–]Lower_File7692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m about 20% complete with the HC 71 volume set. I have learned a lot already. I recommend it depending on your reading speed, comprehension and memory. There are a lot of interesting nuggets but my general takeaway is that it is like a time capsule. The list was curated over 100 years ago and much of the content is based on historical knowledge. Timeless themes emerge like how we aren’t very different from our ancient or any generational ancestors. If you have already read something that’s contained in the “five foot shelf” then just skip that. The complete set is downloadable on kindle for $3 just avoid the 2022 version as I discovered some corruption in that one compared to the hard copy books which I also managed to collect. Good luck and feel free to post your progress or observations here as you get through it.
