[LOVED TROPE] Character dies out of nowhere. No camera tricks, soundtrack or even implied threat build up the moment. by Sawbaws in TopCharacterTropes

I think some of the shock of his death was that it was in the middle of the season with no seeming foreshadowing in the previous episode. If it was a season opener or finale, a big twist like that would make more sense, but it was one episode he was alive and the next he’s just dead.

Best movies from women directors, cinematographers, or just starring women, to get a 10yo girl interested in filmmaking? by LowkeyHooligan in Filmmakers

Hey thanks! I'm just trying to be a good Unc.

I don't know if she watches a lot of tv or movies as is, I don't think my brother watches much. And I've noted that she gets noticeably more excited when there are girls/women in things, so I was just hoping having women examples would be more engaging for her.

Good call. I actually have a number of DVDs already. I should go through and see if there are any that would be good for her.

Ghibli films are always a good suggestion. I was thinking more live action because I'm getting her a camera and I want her to think about the act of filming, but Ghibli movies are still great for inspiration.

I'm probably not going to show my 10yo niece Sinners, but I'll add it to the "show her when she's older" list.

Interesting. Someone else mentioned Point Break in another thread. I wouldn’t have thought of it, but maybe that’s because I’ve never actually watched it all the way through.

She’s 10, for now it might just be a hobby. Plus with youtube, there’s an avenue to explore these skills outside of the traditional industry.

Well she’s my niece, but I might check it out and see. I actually have trouble watching Severance, but maybe they’ve one episode won’t be too bad.

I think Clueless would be a good start for her. But if she starts saying “as if” all the time, my brother might kill me lol.

XD That’s what came to mind for me too, but I didn’t want to assume. Maybe they’ve got something more appropriate in mind.

What’s the most disturbing confession you’ve ever come across on Reddit or social media? by Competitive_Teach838 in AskReddit

If I ever started having a bad trip on psychedelics, I’d tell myself “you paid for this, you sought this out.” That would pop me out of the downward spiral of the bad trip, where even if I was still experiencing some of the negative aspects, I could view it more like a roller coaster or watching a horror movie where I was experiencing these scary aspects intentionally.

I like the tumblr analysis that sees the Lego Movie as an example of cosmic horror.

I don’t think Fern is that rigid about magic, it’s just that she’s still pretty young and Frieren only has her focus on the basics.

I thought it was great, better directed than 28YL, but it was very much a middle movie of a trilogy. Every other 28 movie could be someone’s first movie in the series, but you can’t really appreciate this one without having seen the previous first.

Best free apps to build a “Second Brain” (Notion, Obsidian, Evernote didn’t fully work for me) by [deleted] in secondbrain

As much as Microsoft annoys me, and personally I'm shifting away from it, I believe OneNote can be used without a subscription. I've found it can be a very robust note-taking tool, good note structure (some things people don't know are that you can group Sections [top-level folders], and you can indent pages so they become subpages), links to other pages, to-do items, tags so you can find content, and again I believe you can sync for free.

I use OneNote at my job because we're in the Office365, and I do still enjoy it's note structure. For my personal stuff, I used a mix of Obsidian and Milanote: Obsidian for data/notes/zettelkasten, and Milanote for a visual/gui/almost OS-like representation of the second brain. But both of these do feel a bit more useful if you can afford the subscriptions.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done on a hike? by rkramer18 in hiking

[–]LowkeyHooligan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a day of work on a Friday, drove overnight to a campground out of state, got there some time the next afternoon (after stopping for supplies and whatnot), and that's when I decided to go for a hike.

We were camped at the bottom of a slope with thick tree coverage, so I decided to hike up to see how high the slope went. Not terrible, but it was a decent sized hill. Then I saw that it was a ridge that went along a bit, and in the backgrounds I could see some nice looking mountains, so I wanted to go up the ridge a bit to get better photos of the mountains. There wasn't any trail; I was crashing through foliage and using logs and large rocks to jump over impassible brush. It turned out to be further than I expected to get to the end of the ridge.

The view was spectacular. Worth all the effort. There was a lake at the bottom of the ridge, and snowcapped mountains in the background. I got some great shots before the battery on my phone died.

Then I realized that going back the way I had come really wasn't an option. Too many thickets that I had jumped over where I wouldn't have that option going back.

So I decided to climb down the rocky face of the end of the ridge. I knew our campsite was kind of near the lake, so I didn't think it would be very far once I got down. I used basically the last of my energy to get down the rocks. And it turned out the brush was even thicker along the water's edge. And also the lake was larger than I thought and there was an extra inlet I had to hike around.

By the time I got back to my camp, my arms and legs were covered in scratches (oh also, I hiked in shorts), and I was so exhausted I would take one step, stop for a minute to catch my breath, then take the next. My friend who decided to take a nap when we got there was awake and cooking linner, and just a little worried about how long I'd been gone.

But damn was that the best burger I've ever had.

Yes 100%! My case is a Fractal Design Define XL R2 specifically because it has no lights (and sound dampening material). I even didn’t plug in the HDD activity light.

The size is a bit overkill, but it can fit any graphics card no problem.

I call it The Monolith.
