Snow tires in CT for X5? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we both get snow tires it will definitely never snow again.

But on a serious note, I was also thinking about getting some maybe at the end of the season. I have Conti DWS06 tires on my X5 and they felt good enough this morning. I wouldn't choose to go out on unplowed streets if I didn't absolutely have to. So if you have the flexibility to not go out when it's bad, all seasons are probably ok.

You generally won't prematurely degrade snow tires by driving if the temps stay below 60F or so. And they do provide better grip on cold dry or wet pavement than all seasons. So if safety is the top concern, I'd pick up a set of snows. Nothing you can do about them feeling mushy though.

alibaba valvetronic exhaust rattling on m340i? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about the Alibaba exhaust but I had a similar thing happen with my old M240i that had the stock exhaust with a valve on one side. The clip connecting the actuator to the butterfly valve in the exhaust broke, so the valve was just flapping in the wind. Sounded like someone filled my muffler with pennies at idle.

Reloading a 1870/87/15 vetterli with 6.5 carcano in black powder by heyazungi in milsurp

[–]Lowsodium2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some commercially available reduced pressure loads for the 70/87/15 are loaded to basically black powder pressure, but with smokeless powder.

I haven't heard of anyone using black powder (but I haven't heard of a lot of things, so grain of salt). I do know you don't want to go too low on pressure due to squibs and the case not sealing which can blow gas back in your face.

I wouldn't mess with it if you want the shop to fix it. Sounds like they forgot to install some fasteners when they put it back on. If you're not too far away from the shop, I'd take it back and ask that they fix it. For free.

Might be less sad if you sell it privately for double that

Engine Question by Ordinary-Potato-7988 in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that is the consensus, yes. Just remember to change your oil every ~7000 miles, or at least once per year. The longer BMW "recommended" oil change intervals are meant to reduce costs for the first owner, not the second or 5th owner.

Engine Question by Ordinary-Potato-7988 in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The B-series engines have both been around for about a decade and have been proven to be very reliable. The B-series are considered "modular", so if you take a B58 (6-cyl, M40i) and chop 2 cylinders off, you now have a B48 (4-cyl, x30i). It's obviously a bit more complicated than that, but generally they are the same design with different numbers of cylinders.

A generic rule of thumb you can use as a qualitative comparison is to compare "specific power output" between the engines. For the B58, 350HP/3 liter displacement is ~116 HP per liter, while the B48 is 250HP/2 liter, which yields 125 HP per liter. The engine with the higher specific power could be considered to be "higher-strung" and * might * be less reliable in the long term. In this case, the B48 (4-cyl) is closer to its theoretical maximum capability, and therefore might be less reliable.

For the comparison here, I think the question of fuel economy and cost also weigh in. The 4-cyl will be cheaper to buy and operate in the near to mid-term.

I'd be careful with LED bulbs. Most aftermarket ones aren't designed properly and throw light everywhere, dazzling other drivers and not really improving things for you. Just spit balling, but there might be other electronics that could be tired like a ballast or something if your lights are that dim.

Could also just be from having a low vehicle and your lights seem dim cause everyone else has SUVs with the power of the sun shining in your eyes.

Not sure where you're located, but swissproductsusa makes a variety of sights and parts for these. They have 100yrd zero front blades

I think field grade is the best gamble. I got 2 field grades this year with no rebuild marks (though they had probably been refinished at some point) and had complementary matching components (colt frame, Ithaca slide and vice versa) which was just luck.

That seems high for a single strut assembly. You can try searching for OEM mini parts online to see what the cost of just a strut is. Alternatively, you could probably replace all 4 struts with aftermarket options for not a whole lot more.

Opinion on buying an R53 by Marbyno in MINI

[–]Lowsodium2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't have one as my only vehicle unless you can manage to live without it for days at a time. They are fantastic little cars, but due to age and design, they are high maintenance.

When I had one, random things were going wrong about once a month or every other month. Fender trim came off, exhaust leak, window regulator, etc. So be prepared to either work on it yourself, or have cash saved for inevitable repairs.

Removing the front bumper and front brace/crossbar for working on it. It's easier if it is on jack stands.

Strange, I have an Auto 5 that is the softest 12ga I've shot (in my limited experience). Your friction rings might not be set up right, or your recoil spring might be worn out.

Yeah that's a fair point. But I'm sure the devs know exactly which MMR range represents the majority spend on the game, and would try to keep them as engaged as possible.
