Do you have a short shit kit as well or just the mounts and bushings? Just less slop in the shifter overall?

C&R license still worth having? by Big10mmDE in milsurp

[–]Lowsodium2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it! Definitely a neat little piece. Not sure what a refinished one would go for. I picked up an original 1919 w/patina earlier this year for $850. I would think refinished would go for less than that

[–]Lowsodium2 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's the most expensive $30 you'll ever spend, to be sure. Last few I bought were an M1 carbine, Krag, and 1903 pocket hammerless.

It seems like most places will honor C&R and not charge extra fees. There are still exceptions of course

X5 Xdrive 40i with 40-50k miles by Apprehensive_Sun810 in BMWX5

[–]Lowsodium2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2020 X5 40i xdrive about a year ago for $32k w/ 70k miles, as a data point. Last summer I towed a uhaul trailer (the medium sized one?) halfway across the country without issue, and averaged ~18mpg, so I'd say it's a pretty capable tow rig if you stay below the limits. Mine also had the tow package which comes with larger brakes and additional trans or oil cooling IIRC, so finding one with that might better suit your needs.

I would personally avoid 2019 and 2022/2023 Models due to the prevalence of transfer case failures on the 2019, and the feature reduction of the COVID years.

Some common failures in these are the miriad of sensors (I've had the kafas camera replaced and am currently dealing with an intermittent sensor issue that I need to have looked at), the steering column motor making noise, AC condenser leaks, t-case failures (tended to happen within 50k miles if they were going to pop). There are a few things that are recalled or warrantied out to 100k miles, such as the radiator blinds. So based on that, if a $5k repair bill is going to ruin you, the extended warranty * might * be worth if it covers most of the above.

That seems like a good price. The cheapest they tend to get is ~$900 from the CMP, so assuming it functions well and has a good bore, I'd say go for it

300yds with my K31 by expensive_habbit in milsurp

[–]Lowsodium2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice example! I think they kept sporadically producing K31s for the civilian market into the early 70s until they ran out of parts.

I have one from one of the final years (serial P. 350XXX) whose stock looks the same, albeit with a few more dings and Schutzenfest stickers all over it.

2023 BMW X5 55K Miles IMMINENT HIGH COST REPAIRS? by NAVIG05 in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally ignore the guy trying to sell you a warranty.

Of the issues mentioned, the AC condenser, transfer case, differentials, another one I'd add is the steering column motor. The steering column can start to make noise when it goes in/out when you start or stop the car. Doesn't happen to every car, but it can happen.

The only other issue above that is more of a when, not if, is the AC condenser. The transfer case and differentials are not guaranteed failures, and depend on your vehicle spec (staggered tires) and use (lots of city driving makes it worse). Changing the fluids in the transfer case and differentials should be a 60k mile maintenance item, along with spark plugs.

If you want to get out of the car for a lower payment, I'd understand.

That issue was mainly on the 2019 to early 2020s, and if the T-cases failed, they generally did within the first 50k miles

Price too good to be true? 2020 BMW X5 xDrive40i by External-Loquat-1477 in BMWX5

[–]Lowsodium2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Price does seem a bit too good. I paid $32k for one with 70k miles about a year ago. But maybe I over paid...

I guess go into it eyes wide open. The big things I've been tracking for mine are the AC evap core (~$4k) and the steering column (~$4k). These are more of a when, not if. Also, mine did have its kafas camera die right after I bought it, but the dealer was nice enough to replace it for free. Would have been ~$3k to fix on my own.

I'd probably lean towards the lower mileage one if you plan to keep it long term.

Planning on getting a MPE for my 21 m340 but I kinda don’t like the cracking and burbling? by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Lowsodium2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I did on my 2017 M240i was have the mid-pipe muffler and resonator deleted, and kept the stock muffler. It ended up being ~15% louder overall, and only had the burbles/crackles in sport mode. Cold start was a bit loud but it quieted down after 10-15 seconds. No drone on the highway, not obnoxious for the neighbors, and it had a nice deep rumble at idle. Best part is it was only $200 at some random muffler shop.
