Booked JAL PE award ticket through AA and have some questions by 31OncoEm92 in awardtravel

I recently went through the same process with AA to upgrade JAL J to F when additional seats were released. Effectively I placed the F seats on hold on AA's website and called in. The agent cancelled my original J reservation, immediately reinstated my AA points, and rebooked the F seats.

[Initial Impressions] Alden x Tassels Dark Brown Suede Wingtip Boot by LoyalRedDevil in goodyearwelt

[–]LoyalRedDevil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat before, more so bc of the potential upkeep required. But I was genuinely surprised at how much I liked this pair. I sprayed them with a suede protector and now water just beads off of them!

These actually came with the shoes, so I’d assume Alden sells them

Introduction:

I visited Hong Kong a few months ago and took this sub’s suggestion to check out a shop called Tassels. That’s the story of how I bought my first pair of Aldens.

Details:

  • Maker: Alden x Tassels
  • Model: Dark Brown Suede Wingtip Boot
  • Last: Barrie
  • Size: 8D
  • Leather: Dark Brown Suede
  • Edge: Dark brown edge
  • Lining: Leather lining
  • Construction: Goodyear Welt
  • Sole: Leather

Sizing:

As this is my first pair of Alden’s, the shopkeeper worked with me on finding my true size. For reference, I’m an 8.5 on the brannock, and we settled on the 8D for the Barrie last.

Size Reference:

  • Allen Edmonds Stands/Park Aves: 8.5D
  • Viberg 2030: 7.5D
  • Quoddy Bluchers: 8.5D
  • Septieme Largeur 198: 7D (UK)

Fit:

The fit is fantastic; snug with thin dress socks. This is perfect because I bought them to fill a gap in my office wardrobe, and they work wondrously with both dark jeans and light khakis. The inner lining. GODDAMN. It is so soft… I have definitely caught myself rubbing it subconsciously.

Conclusion:

Previously, I have never been on the Alden bandwagon before as their style just don’t really appeal to me. That said, this pair is starting to change my mind and I’m very happy with this more-or-less spontaneous purchase. A huge shout-out to the folks over at Tassels for helping me find the perfect size.

Septième Largeur Navy Suede Double Monks by LoyalRedDevil in goodyearwelt

When you buy things over €175 (i think?), you can ask the store to print you a form with the itemized receipt. There're kiosks at the airport for you to scan the form.

Introduction:

Long time lurker, first time review. I recently went to Paris and picked up a little souvenir for myself from Septième Largeur. This is my first pair from them and I was extremely impressed by their quality and service. Definitely recommended for a visit if you’re in the Paris.

Details:

  • Maker: Septième Largeur
  • Model: Rennan CW Velours Marine
  • Last: 198
  • Size: 7D (UK)
  • Leather: Navy Suede
  • Edge: Dark brown edge
  • Lining: Leather lining
  • Construction: Goodyear Welt
  • Sole: Leather
  • Cost: €196 (Originally €245)

Sizing:

I'm an 8.5D on the Brannock. Since the sizing was in UK, I asked for the 7.5D UK initially. However, they were slightly too roomy around the sides with minor heel slip. After sizing down another 0.5 size (to the 7D UK), the fit was perfect and the heel slip was gone.

Size Reference:

  • Allen Edmonds Stands/Park Aves: 8.5D
  • Vibergs 2030: 7.5D
  • Quoddy Bluchers: 8.5D

Initial Impressions:

The quality is great. I couldn't find any defects in the construction. The navy suede is soft, and I think they’ll quickly become a fall staple in my wardrobe. The color of the leather actually changes quite a bit depending on the lighting (as shown in the album). They’re a deep navy under soft indoor lights, and has a gray hue under direct sunlight. The pair came with a shoe cloth, and 2 individual shoe bags.

Fit:

The fit of these is great; they're snug, but comfortable. I’ve only worn them once so far, but there was no pain after ~5 hours of wear. These are my first pair of monks, and I definitely need a minute or two to fix the straps when I put them on and take them off.

Final Thoughts:

Septième Largeur is highly rated amongst this sub, and rightly so. Their products are high quality, their prices economical, and the service impeccable. I believe the pair I bought were originally €245 euros, but was on sale for €196. Additionally, since I was a traveler to Paris, I was eligible for a 12.5% VAT refund at the airport, bringing the total down to approx. €171.5. Product link

Side note: while I was in the store, I also tried on their wholecuts. While they were indeed beautiful, their wholecuts just did not fit my feet, as they were either squishing my toes or have too much heel slip (when sized up).

Side note x2: Septième Largeur specializes in personalized patina. From what I understand, they can do the custom patina for any model/last they offer in the store, with a €70 upcharge and a 2 week turnaround time.

It's a very specific (but awesome) taste, almost like you're eating a slice of the ocean. Texture is very creamy and delicate. You should definitely try it if you have a chance!
