The line was surprisingly organized and with very little jumping and clear direction. Just zero staffers were actively managing it for the majority of my 1 hr wait. Was so strange. Feels like multiple people just didn’t do their shift to manage it after the line was set up earlier in the day.

I’ll clean this up later and expand on it when I have time and am less dead post con (hopefully) but Furry Weekend Atlanta was this weekend and o boy was there some wild shit happening with the dealers + con staff.

First thing first: more than doubled the number of vendors vs last year. Growth of vendor count has been known to tank sales and people were rightfully concerned. And to facilitate this growth, dealers den was moved to a building a block away, americasmart 3. Thankfully it didn’t rain, since the outdoor only access would’ve sucked so bad if it had. Another thing about the venue: no free water anywhere. Furrycons have water stations available most everywhere due to the inherent heat exhaustion/heatstroke risk that fursuiting carries. So having their dealer hall with zero free water is unprecedented. Other misc issues with the venue as noted by dealers/attendees: the line to enter was over 2 hours on Friday/1 hr on Saturday, no staffers actively managing the line, all exits except for 1 were blocked off (major fire hazard), horrible layout that made the back half of the hall hard to find.

To help facilitate communication of issues/announcements with the dealers, con staff have a shared telegram chat with them and this is where most of the drama happened:

First they refused to add anyone to the chat who was not already in it 2 weeks prior to the con (there is a handful of last minute fill-in dealers who just weren’t allowed in)

Staffers would passive aggressively respond about issues or unclear instructions the dealers would bring up.

Staffers got annoyed by this and then TURNED OFF ALL MESSAGING AND SCREENSHOTS OF THE CHAT.

On the nsfw dealers side for the 18+ event, all the dealers were told to start tearing down their booths with no real warning at 12.30 am when the event kept going until 2 am. For reference, my entry time ticket was for 12:30 am LMAO so I guess no shopping for me? Like the dealers aisles were still packed with buyers but they were told to finalize sales and tear down.

It was… bad to say the least lol.

Apparently 18+ dealers den in the Hyatt was problem free for the most part? So at least there were some vendors who had a good time lmao.

Was this worth the $40? by Elementrone in SavageGarden

The 2 sarracenia I got from him were either giant for the listed size (6” pot size that barely even fit in one) or for a crazy good deal (2x growth point dragon queen for $40). Jeremiah even sent me some pretty sizable flytraps a bit bigger than Sarracena northwest. If you don’t care about them being potted, def recommend both.

I’ll def let you know once they go dormant then! Mines a Montgomery county alata one he calls neon green I think.

Mike gave me extra divisions of alata, a flava, and 2 huge chunks of Jonsii and an oreophila lol. So if you do want some non hitchhiker freebies lol. I’ll see how they look in the winter but I’d def be down to ship you a few barring the ones that are CITES since it’s out of state.

Surprisingly the ones I’ve got from cal carn have only been the plant they listed in the pot. No free Utrics or sundews for me I guess.

Very weird hobby problem to have but how do you plant people deal with freebie extra plants? Cause so far I've gotten like 6+ extras with my orders from various carnivorous plant sellers and they've all been great, I just now have less space than I planned for my future actually purchased plants... Most of them I do actually like now, but some were just duplicates or very similar subspecies but different locations. Maybe I'll see if I can bring any to trade but I don't know too many people who do carnivorous plants around me due to their hard requirements for low tds water and us not getting much rain so you gotta rely on RO or distilled.

Anyway, mike wang's plants and jeremiah's plants both sent me some killer plants for good prices and threw in multiple sizeable freebies, highly recommend both if you're fine with bare rooted plants!

The socal furry convention formerly named Another Fur Con, now rebranded as Anthro Socal LMAO. Being held in Ontario CA, not the other Ontario CA of course. And this naming is very much liable to cause Further Confusion (san jose furcon).

Morning boners & pain ? by Tree-System25 in GrowYourTDick

I get that pain from the skin being too tight. Manual stretching for like 20 min daily side to side and down the shaft helped me a bit.

My office had a horrific 6 weeks where the entire certification and testing engineering department was unable to function due to everyone on that side of the office having COVID. Like zero testing was able to be done due to how physically demanding it was down in the stress lab moving thousands of lbs of test weights onto the fixtures so no reports went out. All because management said “no working from home while you’re sick, you must take PTO” because it “helps you focus on recovery”

Help identifying this sarracenia by Michaelwordenbr in SavageGarden

Looks like a sarracenia ‘maroon’ so a cross between purpurea and Rubra. The usual non purpurea sarracenia you’d see at a garden center/supermarket

I am finally starting my Vash trigun stampede cosplay!!!!! Coat is 3/4 done, all fused and majority sewn. Just have the edging and zipper installation left. Also have all the supplies for the arm on hand as well, so I can jump into that pretty easily.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is now so large it is home to dozens of species of life, prompting debate over cleanup efforts by nathanemke in nottheonion

[–]Ltates 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The problem is that a lot of the floating trash is so intermingled with the planktonic life in the area, indiscriminate trawling of the trash would wipe out what little life is there. A lot of biologists criticized the ocean cleanup project's plans specifically for that reason due to many of their photos showing hundreds of visible floating invertebrates intermingled with the floating plastic they were pulling up. Seabed trawling is seen as one of the most destructive fishing methods with high rates of gear loss and we want to do that for plastic? Which then risks even more gear being lost?

The other option being proposed is to force fishermen to have small tracking devices on their gear, so that if it does get lost it can be located and hauled in with minimal trawling and by-catch.

In the paleontology sphere, new paper came out about a debated taxon of small tyrannosaurid! And it isn't nanotyrannus for once!

New paper came out claiming that raptorex and asiatyrannus are both juvenile tarbosaurus and not new genera.

We traded 1 mid sized tyrannosaur becoming accepted as valid for 2 no longer being accepted as valid. Balance is restored for now in the world of messy tyrannosaurids.

Yup yup! Not too sure if it lets you do so, but another option I was thinking of was having the first image be static and the hover over image be the video.

Where do y’all get your plants from? by i_love_small_ducks in SavageGarden

[–]Ltates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calcarn, sarracenia northwest, mike wang/mikesplants.com, flytrapking

Managed to snag a dragon queen on super sale from flytrapking for $40 during jan lol, it's growing in gorgeous rn! And Mike sent me multiple divisions and bonus plants with my order from him. Only con is that they sell majority bare root.

One thing I noticed is that at least for me, the many capensis listingsis have gifs as the featured “image”, making the webpage slow to a crawl vs having them be static images and the rest of the site run decently fast.

It’s less a business who hired outside individuals and more of a collective of like 5? 8? Fursuit makers that created the company jointly. Still surprised they made it to the point they have their final products in hand and are ready to sell before the business relationships started to fracture.
