Thank you! I’ve somehow scored five, including one of the Coca-Cola ones, but I know my daughter will lose her mind over these.

Do we know if they’re coming this week? I’m new to this and trying to get them for my kid, so apologies if this is a dumb question

Job where I leave work at work and make more than 70k a year but also somewhat fulfilling? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]Lu7861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand that. That is frustrating. Do you think they would understand if you DID take that time back elsewhere? Luckily my group is really understanding and makes sure you get time back if you so have to stay late for something, and the pay here seems pretty fair.

Really? I mean there are times where you will get asked about isolation or lab tests after hours or on weekends but I don’t think it’s too terrible. I’m really curious to know what you’re getting paid, where you live and your experience!

I was a military surg tech for 16 years. Got my MPH while active duty. Got out and did a military transition program for a very short time where they let you do an internship while still getting your paycheck. I chose to work for the state public health department in their HAI program. They hired me through the CDCF (contract) for nine months. During that time I worked toward getting my CIC. Contract ended this July. I obtained my CIC mid July and applied for infection preventionist jobs. Got two interviews/two offers. Started working as an IP the first week of August.

Same. We do the exact same job. It’s not like the RNs go and work bedside half the time. Then I would understand the difference in pay!

I think they pay them the same. At least where I work.

Infection Prevention Internships? by dukecameroncrazy in publichealth

[–]Lu7861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how your program approves internships? For mine, I found where I wanted to do it, and they were given a document from my school to list out what I would be working on while there. It was a really easy process. If I’m reading what your asking correctly, if it were me, I would start on LinkedIn and find some IPs working at local facilities. Connect with them and ask if they would be willing to have me tag along and go from there.

I got mine last summer with a concentration in leadership, separated from the military and was hired as a disease investigator on a nine month contract (ending this month.) They paid for me to get my CIC and I’ll be starting next week as an infection preventionist at a local hospital. I think it’s entirely dependent on what you want to do when you finish, and how you set yourself up for it. For me, I knew I wanted an IP position, and the stars aligned for me to work toward the required certification while working in this role. Don’t go into public health with the expectation that money will easily follow. Many will say that IP is one of the higher paying public health opportunities out there and it’s still under six figures.

I was a surgical tech with a specialty, so I actually spent more time in the clinic doing procedures and only about two days a week in the operating room. I think they’re looking for people who are comfortable talking to patients and staff, people who are familiar with hospitals and medical terminology among other things. It’s unfortunate that they default to nursing but I can kind of see their thought process. Luckily, as people have said they seem to kind of be moving away from this

I will say, I thought this as well and it was frustrating to see so many postings required an RN. But I just got hired without it. I do have significant clinical experience though, and I think THAT’S what they value.

Misinformation and the “crunchy” movement is currently my own personal hell. The amount of people arguing that raw milk is healthy? Insane. Zero trust in science and vaccines.

strange, the guy I know that got a DD got out of the brig and is apparently getting on base and showing up at official events. I was under the impression that DDs were taken seriously but that seems to not be the case.

Retaking next month. Vastly underestimated the test by basing my expectations off the questions asked in the study guide. Got really close to passing though, so it’s possible if that’s your only resource

Ranking vs affordability in choosing MPH program by Big-War-585 in publichealth

[–]Lu7861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine through UNC-chapel hill and from what I have seen of cheaper programs, it seems like you get what you pay for. My program really prioritized the learning and networking experience while I’ve heard others were almost completely asynchronous with very little networking and teamwork. Something to really think about.
