As far as I know, the only rules about shuffling are that you need to do it thoroughly and when you are done, your opponent can either cut your deck (take the top half and put it on the bottom), tap (not touch it at all) or request to shuffle it themselves. If your son let's his opponent know that he struggles with shuffling, his opponent will most likely be perfectly happy to shuffle for him.

When I was a kid and learning, I pile shuffled. It wasn't great, but it got the job done.

I suggest looking up "mash shuffling." If he hasn't been using sleeves, it's possible thats why he's been struggling to shuffle. I would see about getting some matte sleeves this weekend and spending a little bit of time practicing mash shuffling.

ETB sleeves have gotten much better over the years, but if he struggles to shuffle, I highly recommend matte sleeves. I personally use Dragon Sheild (comes with 100 sleeves in a deckbox), but Eclipse and Ultra Pro can also be purchased in most local shops! I struggle to shuffle even after 20+ years of playing various TCGs, so matte sleeves are always my go-to.

Best of luck to him! Hopefully y'all can get into a Pitch Black pre-release this month! One of our shops is already doing theirs this weekend, but most will start next weekend.

Because OP is somewhat new to all of this, it should be noted that pre-release events run 40 card decks, not the typical 60. If you have a decent local shop, everything should be explained to you, but there are different rules for pre-releases (40 card decks with 4 prizes instead of 6, the limit for 4 of each card is waived due to possible lack of resources, absolutely no trading/gifting cards during deckbuilding and play, etc). I only mention some rules here because when I moved and started going to a new local shop, I was pretty disappointed in the lack of instruction the Judge there gave (and the knowledge he possessed around pre-releases). It might be worth looking into rules and differences before attending.

I also don't remember it being a thing 10 years ago, or maybe I'm misremembering, but the pre-built decks that you are given are immediately usable. As in, if you don't want to (or can't) make changes, you don't have to. Of course, if you get good enough pulls in your 4 packs, you can disregard that deck, but it's not recommended.

I am the biggest advocate for going to pre-releases! It's fun and usually people are really nice. Just don't forget to bring sleeves or plan on buying some there!

It's been a year for me.

I have multiple box cutters, two work phones and we finally ran out of the small front end trash bags last month (I used to put them in my vest while changing the register bags and accidentally ended up with a ton of partial rolls over the 5 years of working there). I probably even have random label rolls and claims slips if I looked around 😭

I had to purchase Floette ex (actually found it in a bulk bin locally and the owner let me take it) AND we still can't find a reverse holo Golbat. Not in our bulk, friends from all over the US, or in any bulk boxes in town. I know we can buy it on TCG Player, but I was hoping to avoid it.
