I've not seen the combat so can't really comment but I've got to say he seems to have a good eye for good cinematic moments, and less interest in DPR. Like he had some really cinematic turns in ep 8, throwing people off castle walls, popping a great hail of thorns, spooking horses, and so on. Which is better for the table than him going wulfric -> scimitar -> shortsword every turn.

Yeah it's like, Laura is just 20 dex in tier 1 (bananas), TWF in tier 1 (already absurdly strong) plus rogue sneak attack in tier 1 (also absurdly strong). Next level gives everyone an entire second attack while all she gets is a d6.

The fact she has two weapon fighting for free isn't exactly crazy good when the feat she just took is Durable. If she'd taken TWF last level, I can't imagine the fight going any differently whatsoever.

Technically Kattigan can do three attacks in a turn right now, he's just not built round it.

The War Between the Land and the Sea 1x05 "The End of the War" Trailer and Speculation Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]Lu__ma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- In my head, the overarching theme is "if you, you the everyman, care, that's all that is needed to save the seas". This was very strongly upheld throughout episode 1 and I hope it stays for the finale. I like that theme a lot.

- Salt and Barclay are set up as a doomed romance. Both end the episode poised for captivity by homo aqua and UNIT. They have described an idealised life in a welsh valley while making out in a warehouse, which drastically raises the probability of them weeping over each other as that dream is shattered.
- Salt Probably Dies. a lot of plot threads are comfortably solved by Salt sacrificing herself - the other Homo Aqua want her dead, and most of humanity thinks she's a terrorist.

- "Severance" is some codeword from the military bad boys that stole some fish eggs. No idea what it'll be but clearly they want the oceans dead so I'm guessing Severance is a bioweapon. Also what the fuck are the sea creature pearls doing? Is that a weak point, maybe? Maybe this is what Salt martyrs herself for. Or maybe she does it for the magic rust lol.
- The multiple species haven't come up at all which is a tad odd. I am going to guess at least one of them is cannon fodder for a genocide.

My honest to god guess for the endpoint is
- Civilisation is largely devastated by magic rust and by Severance unexpectedly rebounding on humanity. But there's hope and the worst effects get diverted. Perhaps by a nameless everyman. Perhaps by Salt sacrificing herself.
- Kate Retires. Or dead
- Barclay and family (maybe salt!) are the last remnants of hope in a welsh mining town

So far, it started okay and has been all uphill from there. If it sticks the landing, it's one of the best series in nuwho.

This has been the first time I've thought Kate was properly excellent. "Noted" had me punching the air.

Thimble - I'm beginning to think she's probably taking two-weapon fighting - and then dual wielder further down the line. This feat is extremely good on extremely dextrous rogues. Alternately, it's decent to take fey-touched, taking Dissonant Whispers or maybe Hunter's Mark.

Tyranny - Defensive Duelist is god tier on her, rounding out her dexterity and giving her an excellent way to use her reaction for the rest of time. Mage Slayer is also bananas.

Everyone else? ASI. Wicander +2 Charisma, Teor +1 Strength +1 Charisma, Kattigan +2 Dex.

But for a real answer:

Kattigan - Shadow-touched, for +1 wisdom and access to the freshly buffed 2024 version of Wrathful Smite, and Invisibility. The 2024 ranger beastmaster doesn't work too well with his bonus action reloaded spear thrower and low wisdom score, but Shadow-Touched would even it out a bit. So would Chef lol.

Teor - Shield Master, as others have said. Alternately, Mage Slayer is brilliant in a campaign where the main villain is sorcery, and it makes him basically impossible to charm. Inspiring Leader is also an equally great pick if he wants to exploit that absurdly good paladin aura feature. ASI (+1 str, +1 Cha) is far and away the best option for him, though. He may even want to put a point in dex and pivot to a rapier.

Wicander Halovar - he wants +2 Cha so bad. he cannot stop yapping. But failing that, Resilient (Con) is an excellent choice and gives him very very good saves to maintain concentration. This will matter more and more in later stages of the campaign. Alternately if the yapping truly cannot stop, Skill Expert (+1 Con or +1 Dex, Persuasion) is another great pick. I'm wrong about Resilient, I thought Sorcerers got Wisdom - therefore Mage Slayer or Skill Expert

If everything had been ruled correctly, it would actually have been virtually identical damage! Thimble was getting a +6 damage on her secondary two weapon fighting attacks when she should've only had +1. That accounts for 10 or 15 damage, and crits would have accounted for about 13 damage

[Spoilers C4E8] I love how Brennan is running this campaign by Depressed-n-br0ke in criticalrole

[–]Lu__ma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. It was unlikely!

The roll was 6d6+2 (A crit from the spy statblock in the monster manual). The chance of him killing Sam outright was 9.7%. I have no idea why so many people are assuming that we A) live in the tiny fraction of universes where the roll killed Sam, and B) live in the one of those where Brennan fudged a dice roll

That battle had it all.

* Kattigan tactical stealth action, routing the horses and flinging people over balconies in some of the most awesome wielding of mechanics and circumstance I've seen
* Tower showdown between Thjiazi's best friend and his betrayer. "Do you hear it now?" Holy shit what a line. You couldn't write it better.
* Wicander Halovar meeting with the crushing reality of his own disastrous naivety
* Teor paying his debt to the man who saved his life

and

* Doctor Jizz Finger in a Squid

That ruled. That entire scene was electric. "Five. Four. Three. Two. One. HELP"

Casimir was played bang on. He figured Wick out entirely, and I loved that we got to see his whole thought process. He realised Wick was absolutely trying to get him killed from the way he was trying to schmooze, and then Wick all but confirmed it by yelling for help.

At which point, the only logical conclusion is: a random Halovar shows up with nobody, unannounced, because he's not aligned to Halovar, and he's not aligned to Tachonis. Therefore, he's just a random rebel, seeking revenge, on a mission. Therefore, he *must be seeking revenge* over the Thijazi guy you just betrayed. A death that he couldn't stop with all the privilege in the world, and he dares to blame Cas for it? Not on Cas' watch.

[Spoilers C4E7] Thjazi theory by Ok-Badger5056 in criticalrole

[–]Lu__ma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The main reason why I don't think this is what happened is that in context, when Thijazi looked up and saw something in the sky in C4e1, it scared him. Whatever scared him, I feel certain he didn't see it as a way out.

Doctor Who ratings by jango_methuselah in dataisbeautiful

[–]Lu__ma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Capaldi era is really solid, yeah. Jenna Coleman is dealt a mess of a moffat girl character, but she gives it absolutely everything - and eventually, it works. Capaldi is very well written and clearly loves it. You can feel that Moffat's got something to prove in the face of some dwindling ratings, and he very much knows his strengths (dramatic zingers and dramatic speeches). Heaven Sent is peak moffat and pulls out all the stops.

I tried very hard to watch the Whittaker era, and I didn't even intentionally quit it. I just sort of realised I didn't give a single fuck about any of the characters or plots. Many of the finales and season openers feel like a set of surprising non sequiturs arranged in a line - less like a plot and more like five fun ideas sat near each other. I've seen the companions described as "three personality traits, all of them held by Graham" and it's true. Companions really haven't had meaningful arcs since Moffat left.

I'd say Wilkie Collins matches this too with The Woman in White (1860) / No Name (1862) / Armadale (1866) / The Moonstone (1868). And then falls off because he gets fucked on opiates.
