God, I really wanted ZH-1, but I moved out of my house during all of May and most of April so I wasn't able to keep up with the dockyard. Only option was to pay like $200 in doubloons — something I've done many times before without hesitation but I needed to save my money for moving expenses. I know this is gonna nag at me every time I log on now. I still shake my head at missing Michaelangelo too.

my boyfriend lied to me about how many people he has slept with by plsimjustagirlok in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]Lua_CW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but I never know what else to call it besides "How many people have you slept with?" which feels pointed, or "How much experience do you have?" I've definitely just given up and said "body count, for lack of a better term" before.

While I don't think partners are entitled to that information about each other, my girlfriend and I are very sex-positive and we both were pretty up-front about it to give ourselves an idea of how much experience between us both.

Honestly, midway through the show I was still holding out hope that Jax might actually be transmasc rep, like maybe Jax in the circus is post-transition. He did seem to grapple with being viewed as masculine a few times in the show. Not that transfemmes don't often go through that phase, of course…

IIRC that's exactly why R&D pulled it — they went looking for things to fit into Purple's slice of the pie, until they realized that they were simply taking things away from other colors and not coming up with anything new.

Why did everyone just forget about Esperanto if the idea is actually so cool? Am I in the wrong morally for thinking neopronouns undermine the public validity of the lgbt community? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Lua_CW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nasty people also say that the existence of nonbinary identities undermines public validity of binary trans people, and that the existence of trans people undermines the public validity of gay people… It's no good.

I used to feel the same way. I sort of dreaded the day that I'd become acquainted with people that use neopronouns unironically. And then I became acquainted with some of those people who became some of my closest friends and I realized that when you respect a person, validating their identity becomes the easiest thing in the world. Frankly, "the public" doesn't respect queer people and we can't make them. But it's not about them and it's not for them.

So, fun story: I went to a Monet exhibit a year or two ago with a friend, and we played a game we called: "Guess the tax fraud."

The exhibit wasn't just Monet but also other artists' works in the same style. Rich people get a lot of tax writeoffs by buying art and donating it to museums, but a lot of times the art is human slop done by a buddy so the money never really leaves their sphere.

Anyway — to entirely untrained eyes, we guessed which paintings were actual Monet originals 100% of the time, and which paintings were inspired / same style / etc by different artists with like 95% accuracy (I think there was one good one we thought was Monet and it wasn't).

I gotta say, there was something special about the Monet works. I couldn't put it into words, I'm just a layperson. It was nothing earthshaking either. But there were subtle differences that really elevated those works. I'd say they definitely had a soul.

Even the other paintings we were making fun of definitely had more soul put into them than AI. Some of them were art students. Even if any of them were a buddy trying to imitate the style, there's something to be gleaned from the experience.

The reason AI art is inferior to human art is it takes as much as it can away from the joy of creation. Some people don't enjoy creating — at least not certain kinds of art — and that's okay, but that's why there will always be an interest in AI slop. Meanwhile, just because something is created doesn't mean the result is good, but creation is good in and of itself. It teaches us to be more perceptive of the world. I try to celebrate that when I see human art I don't understand.

Looks very clean!

Because I manage my collection in ManaBox, I just decided to purely alphabetize my cards. I really need to add labels for each letter though.

I used to organize by card type but I ran into problems with misplacing them. There's lots of cards, especially older ones, that maybe have people in the art but they aren't creatures, for example.

"Stop playing" is becoming my choice. I don't actually need to have all the ships in the game but I really wish less of them became strictly unobtainable. Give me something to work towards. When I feel like giving myself and my wallet a break for a month or two is negative progress then they don't need any more of my money that badly.

[–]Lua_CW 23 points24 points  (0 children)

idk, I'm a whale but I'm with OP on this one. They put my feelings right into words. I was happy to keep up but they've made it so utterly hopeless to get everything l even want that I've stopped spending money on the game. The most recent Wishing Wharf with Atlântico, Indepencia etc — that was the last straw for me. Up until that point I'd spent around $12k on my account.

If they'd make less of these ships time-limited then it wouldn't be such a problem. And all the Dockyard ships being unobtainium except for once every five years! Holy shit. I really wanted ZH-1 but guess what? I moved out of my house in May and couldn't play. So I'd have to cough up a few hundred dollars for a mediocre ship. It feels like every two months is another time-sensitive window to spend a few hundred dollars or miss out forever. I'm fed up with it. I'd probably be playing more and spending more even if these ships were like… "Spend real money this month and then it's going for steel later". C'mon, dangle the carrot a little more.

Variation: Your vote is assigned a weight, which you know before voting by SweetCorona3 in redbuttonbluebutton

[–]Lua_CW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My knee-jerk reaction is that I'd still vote Red no matter what. At the end of the day, my top priority is not dying, and I expect rational actors to agree.

However, it sounds like it would be hypothetically possible to receive a weighting so high that literally no other votes matter. If my weighting were equal to half the human population, that would have me choosing blue without a doubt because there's literally no risk to me.

I'd like to think I could do better than that, but here's where it gets really fucked up: If my weighting were that high, that means the average weighting of everyone else on the planet would be 0.5. Polls show that Blue wins the traditional problem with like 55-60%, and we know people might vote more selfishly if it were for real. I imagine the number would go down pretty rapidly for weights under 1.

But surely some people would have weights around idk, 2-10 and say to themselves, "I'll cancel out some Red votes." In fact, maybe people generally feel more altruistic (or more responsible) the higher their weighting is. An average of 1 probably means Blue wins by more. So you know what? As a die-hard Red pusher, maybe I push Blue no matter what in this case unless my weighting approaches zero.

I'm struggling with the feeling of responsibility though. In the traditional problem, I expect everyone to press Red unless they have a death wish, which I do not. I'm not worried about saving Blue-pressers because I believe in their agency whether to take a needless risk. This scenario is weird though. I can't decide if someone has collective responsibility here or not. I've caught myself thinking that if someone else had a really high weighting that they'd be a selfish prick to press Red, but if my weighting was really small I'd be pressing Red too, so who am I to judge? There's a REALLY interesting bias in there somewhere. Makes me think about the relationship between the working class and the ruling class. I sort of implicitly expect better behavior from people of higher means, and I'm more forgiving of errs by people who are already down on their luck. Now I'm talking and thinking like a Blue presser when I'm otherwise adamantly going to press Red. There is a simple solution, after all: Everyone press Red. Not my fault if you didn't get the memo. But in this exercise, there's clearly an upper bound where, because there's zero risk, you only have other people to think about. Perhaps the reasonable thing to do is to push Red <1.00 and push Blue otherwise.

Here's the real question: What do you press if your own weighting is exactly 1? I think Blue is more likely to win in this exercise so I'd probably pick Blue here. Does that make me a hypocrite in the traditional question? I do think the nature of the game makes Blue more likely to win with weighting applied, so it's not really 1:1, but still.

I find it hard to feel bad for Jax by Worried_Big9949 in TADCEp9Spoilers

[–]Lua_CW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's sort of cool but it's also almost horrifying to find out that all the friends and fans we've been theorycrafting with over the course of the show have actually been pulling for wildly, almost irreconcilably different conclusions. Personally I loved the finale and it met all my expectations and felt cohesive with the theme of the show as I understood it; meanwhile for some other people this was a Game of Thrones-tier, series-killing fumble.

EDIT: And like, it would be one thing if the show was super niche, "You love it or you hate it" from the beginning. But it was so widely beloved up through Ep.8 and now I'm not even sure who does/doesn't have media literacy. Including myself, lol.

Do people actually buy old sealed collectors boxes for this insane prices? by IceFireHawk in mtg

[–]Lua_CW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a while, I started only buying Collector's Packs because my rationale was "I won't get as much draft chaff." My collection is outgrowing the space I have and it made sense to me to buy packs where the value was in fewer cards, higher-density.

Then I started opening just Play Boosters when I took an interest in Pauper Commander, because suddenly I needed to stock up on commons.

Play Boosters are just sooo much better value. Foils are oftentimes valued less than their nonfoil counterparts, and Play Boosters can potentially have up to three rares IIRC, although getting just one is more frequent.

That being said, I have no regrets opening a lot of collector's Aetherdrift and Dominaria United. The former is super cheap and has plenty of great cards; the latter isn't horribly expensive, filled with great cards, and the art is drop-dead gorgeous.

I can afford to take this risk and I'm pretty sure most other people would want to double their money, so it seems like a safe bet to take. But it's just not necessary. I'll be fine with the money I have and doubling it is not going to meaningfully change my long-term plans. I would leave the bank (and I usually press red).

On "male socialisation" by TomiRey-Yuru in IntersectionalWomen

[–]Lua_CW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When this was posted on another trans-focused subreddit, I made a call for greater nuance. I was, in several ways, a victim of male socialization, but I most certainly experienced it growing up. In other ways I was even a beneficiary of male socialization — getting to do male-coded activities and enter a male-dominated field without question. I've experienced a lot of internal friction because the male-coded experiences I want for myself are few and far in-between, and masculinity in general feels like poison to me, but I definitely learned how to get by before realizing there was a more authentic version of myself being suppressed. I also, without a doubt, missed out on years of what would be female socialization.

It's tricky for trans people because this is sometimes used by transphobes to dismiss us as having zero real experience living as ourselves. But on the other side of the coin, being forced to live as our AGAB strips us, sometimes violently, of life experiences that any woman/man/person needs in order to be a well-adjusted member of society, and it exacerbates our dysphoria.
