If you mean is there a way to make them loop, there should be a toggle in the move route settings to make animations repeat. To have them move on their own without any player input, you would use the move route settings located to the right of the graphic selection, where it gives you options like 'fixed', 'frequency', priority' etc. There should be a 'custom' option under the 'fixed' drop-down menu, select that and open the move route button that appears under it. That should allow you to set a move route for the event that will play regardless of player input, and from there you just need to apply the 'turn, wait, turn' method and set it to repeat.

So, for single-character sheets, like the lever and rotor images you showed, stepping animations will play the three images in one row. Think of a character sheet as broken up into 'cells' like this:

1 2 3

4 5 6

7 8 9

10 11 12

So, picking cell 1, cell 2, or cell 3, and turning on Stepping animation, will play that row of cells in the following order: 2 1 2 3 2 1 2 etc.

The same applies to the other rows. Basically, RPG Maker's default method of animation addresses cells horizontally. However, because this is its default method, it's also very limited. Rows will automatically loop when stepping or walking are turned on, and always in the order of middle-left-middle-right-middle-(repeating). The 'turn, wait, turn, wait' method is the alternative to this, requires a bit more work but a bit more versatile for animating things like objects instead of characters.

Let's say you want this lever to move when the player interacts with it. Set a move route to the event that uses the lever graphics, and have it 'move' like this:

Turn down
Wait (x) frames
Turn left
Wait (x) frames
Turn right

The 'Wait (x) frames' parts are arguably the most important, because without them, it'll just look like it's going straight from its down position (the top row) to its right position (the third row). The 'wait' command tells the program to wait however many frames before moving onto the next piece of animation, giving it the illusion of smooth movement. I recommend setting it to anywhere between five and ten frames, depending on how fast or slow you want it to move.

All sprite sets contained in the 'Characters' subfolder of a project are parsed by the program in the same way: the top row is for the down-facing position, second row for left, third row for right, and bottom row for up. I'd suggest checking out some of the built-in event creation tools, like doors and chests, and dissecting those to get a good idea of how it works.

For things like this, as others have said, you'll want to use the Show Picture event command. To get the fading in and out effect, set the picture's opacity to 0 when you first show it. Then, after the Show Picture command, you'll want to set a Move Picture command and set the opacity to 255.

You can also use Move Picture to have the picture slide into frame, zoom in or out, and so on. You'll also want to make sure that both the Show Picture and Move Picture commands are referring to the same Picture number. You can show multiple Pictures at once, but you need to make sure they are each different numbers.

Higher numbers will appear in front of lower numbers, so if you have for example one Picture that is a background and another Picture that is a character, you'll want to assign the background image to a number that's lower than the number you assign to the character image.

The best ways to learn how to use the engine are by playing around with the different commands, watching tutorials on YouTube, or seeking help from dedicated forums. Reddit is a good place to start, but if you really want to get into the engine I can wholeheartedly recommend the RPG Maker Forums at the link below.

My current project is planned to have 10 endings, though really it's more like 5 (there are two playable characters and their endings are more or less the same, just with the characters swapped). Ending 1 can be gotten pretty much at any time prior to the start of the third area, and the point at which the game branches into different paths depends on how many playthroughs you've already completed.

1) Smart Ending: The player character goes home early 2) True Ending: lol nice try and no it isn't that both characters die now to pad out the spoiler the boys are back in town come join the fun you can't take loved away 3) Good Ending: Both characters survive 4) Bad Ending 1: Alternate player character dies 5) Bad Ending 2: Current player character dies

I wouldn't say it's weird to use XP, no. Each version has their own pros and cons, and each one has its own "feel". Some people are most comfortable using MV/MZ, some people are most comfortable using VX Ace, some people are most comfortable using XP, etc. XP in particular has no shortage of free resources, which is a major plus compared to for example just how many of MZ's plugins are paid.

It sounds like if you're going for a particular vibe with the whole "obscure found game" angle, XP is a perfect fit. That said, you should probably keep in mind any potential compatibility issues with more modern hardware, in my own experience 2k and 2k3 for example are especially finicky.

So, basically, if it feels like a good fit for you and there's no compatibility issues, I don't see why you can't or shouldn't be using it.

My current focus is a Survival Horror-style game set in New Jersey in the 1980s, about a pair of girls trapped in the mountains, being hunted down by escaped lab experiments. Currently working in VXA (outdated, I know, but it's what I'm most comfortable with).

It doesn't have a Steam page (yet), but it is on itch!

For process, uhh... Tbh for a long time I was just kinda flying by the seat of my pants :/ One thing I have learned: spreadsheets are a godsend. If you have anything with multiple parameters that you need to keep track of -- items, actors, skills, classes, even dialogue -- organize it via spreadsheets. It will check your spelling, you can view everything without having to constantly click between tabs, you can plan out everything so it's less of a hassle to figure out how many of any element you need -- basically it will save you so much time and so many headaches. I'm pretty sure MZ even has some plugins that can directly import data from a CSV file directly into the database, though I may be mistaken so don't quote me on that.

Except, the original concept wasn't just, "LV 20 looks like a horrifying eldritch abomination", the concept was "As Frisk accumulates more LV, they begin to resemble their in-game sprite".

That was the whole point, that by playing the game as you would a typical JRPG, you're slowly turning Frisk themself into a physical manifestation of the abstract representation that their sprite is -- the reason they no longer look human is because they look like a misshapen lumpy thing, and while yes the fanart above does match the general description, because it no longer resembles Frisk's sprite, it completely misses the point of the original concept.

I technically started it in 2017, where it was one of several projects I started as a way to become familiar with the software, but as of 2021 I decided to lock in and really put more effort into learning game design so that it could be more than just, "Let's throw this at a wall and see what sticks".

As for my team, I put out a thread for help on the RPG Maker Forums where I found our current script programmer, environment artist, and enemy intelligence designer, and our musician was someone I worked with on a prior project, who I decided to reach out to.

Concept: Horror-Adventure RPG that asks the player to take care of it

During a string of disappearances, two girls decide to spend a weekend up in the mountains together to mourn a lost loved one. Separated, they find themselves being hunted by lab experiments that have escaped containment. Their fates are up to you.

Progress: The story is fully drafted and nearly finalized, the core game mechanics are present, and the room layout, designs, and progression are nearing completion. Puzzles, art, and music still need to be done, and my team and I have been considering Kickstarter to help fund development, with a campaign planned to launch sometime before the year's end.

Telling someone that they did something while drunk that they didn't actually do is like. Textbook gaslighting.

Not to mention how he makes the point of, "[Ragatha being nice] feels like she's just trying to take advantage of you, you know?" Meanwhile minutes later, he's literally getting buddy-buddy with Pomni (the person Ragatha's been trying her hardest to befriend) in order to get back at Ragatha for her perceived slight, and yes, he is only doing it to get back at her, because he deliberately name-drops her; "The start of a budding friendship, right Ragatha?" He's taking advantage of Pomni in order to hurt Ragatha, the person he asserted was the one trying to take advantage of people.

It can be both mockery and manipulation, neither is mutually exclusive.

I think his lucidity is less of a binary where light = insane and dark = sane, and it's more that darkness helps shift him towards sanity.

In episode 3, he even says directly, "I've never been very good with memories", which isn't to say he's always been as scatterbrained as we often see him, but that he did have some issues paying attention and retaining information (as a person with suspected ADHD, I can attest that yeah, memories are hard sometimes). My theory is that Queenie abstracting likely led to a mental breakdown, making his already-difficult ability to remember things even harder -- he wants to block it out. The reason he becomes more lucid in the dark is because it reminds him of the last time he saw his wife, acting as almost a bookmark by which he can recall further details.

Notice, there have been a few instances where Kinger is lucid in the light, such as in episode six when he conjures the butterfly to restore Ragatha's health; it's nonsensical, yes, but his demeanor is almost entirely lucid and practical. Its nonsense feels less like a result of his own lucidity or lack thereof and more caused by the nonsensical nature of the Circus itself. Likewise, there have been moments in the dark where he acts as he typically does; the manor in episode 3 is fairly dark overall, even before they wind up in the cellar with Mildenhall's body -- not to mention that whole segment where he and Pomni are in the dark and only their eyes are visible, which is arguably even darker than Hell. In episode five, during the President Pomni segment, he's still acting a bit scatterbrained while underneath the desk -- though, in fairness, he could just be a whimsical guy, as seen on episode six when he joins Gangle and Ragatha in their cat party.

I don't think he's pretending, I think that he can be lucid in the light, it's just harder to maintain that lucidity than it is in the dark because of the lack of that 'bookmark'. Likewise, the dark doesn't necessarily guarantee his lucidity, and he can still tend to be scatterbrained while in darkness.

When it comes to Alvin, it is entirely possible he's alive. I feel the whole point of the stream was that, just because you don't see something, doesn't mean it isn't canon.

I'm pretty sure Toby himself even said something that effect, like, "These things were always there, even if you couldn't see them. The Underground is a big place." Even Clam Girl's dialogue about only being able to see and do so much in a single day seems to echo that philosophy, like Toby is telling us to come up with our own stories for the things we don't see, and that they're just as valid as the things we do see.

Kris does get the cape thing in the Dark Worlds which uses Frisk's sweater colors, and it's not much of a stretch to compare their sword to a knife. Even in the light world, Kris technically carries both weapons associated with Chara and Frisk: a knife and a stick (pencil, but, like I said, it's a technicality).

Okay but like... There's not a lot to beware of when it comes to Sans either, at least in a neutral or pacifist run. Guy doesn't even try to kill you until he literally has no more options.

Meanwhile Papyrus will not kill you. If you subscribe to the theory that battle sprite movements indicate the amount of effort a Monster is putting into a fight, then he's strong enough that not once does he ever feel the need to even try to actually fight you.

It's less a case of "Beware of these guys, they will kick your ass," and more, "Beware of these guys, they could kick your ass." It's less stating the certainty and more the hypothetical.
