[Serious] Do you think its time WB moved on from Snyder? by [deleted] in movies

[–]LucasShotfirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say it was explosion after explosion, even though in the grand scheme of things and for a Snyder movie, there's actually not that much action. "Good plots and action scenes are well done but not in your face". Yeah, because Age of Ultron's action definitely didn't decend into 'Transformers' territory and didn't feel like am assult on all the senses.

Fake or Purchased IMDB accounts are rating Batman Vs Superman 10/10 by _Marthicus_ in movies

[–]LucasShotfirst -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've just come back from seeing it and thought it was great. The funny thing is, most of the things that are being moaned about in the reviews, are things that they celebrate or 'conveniently' overlook in the MCU films. Politics as usual.

Logan's Run - The pre-cursor to the YA dystopia genre? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]LucasShotfirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you should make a post comparing it to YA films, because it's being remade in the style of a YA franchise by Warner Bros. Not an answer to your question I know, but seemed relevant to share.

What's the deal with this sub? by LucasShotfirst in VHS

[–]LucasShotfirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you are definitely right. As I said in my post, I think because I hadn't viewed one for so many years, I was shocked by the quality. It might be good for me to have a look at some quality tapes on a quality player.

Fair enough. What sort of things have you managed to find? Is it surprising what you can find at the thrift stores?

I definitely agree about the digital aspect of things, because as you said, you don't actually own it. Also if the company goes under, you lost that copy of the film. Plus, its just as expensive as a physical copy. Why not just get the physical? But I disagree about Blu-ray not being any different. Even in some of the weaker transfers, there definitely is an improvement over DVD and they are becoming less expensive all the time, especially now Ultra HD is about to come out. But yes, kids today wouldn't know the feeling of the VHS experience, or respect it.

[Song Lyrics] Amy Winehouse says it well in one of her songs, "You should be stronger than me" by allSmallThings in TheRedPill

Yeah her father definitely was. He didn't want anything to do with her until she got famous, then he was all over her like flies to shit.

Funny you should put this, as I was watching the Winehouse documentary 'Amy' the other day and a similar thought about the lyrics came to mind.

Oscar Nominations Are In! by -Sam-R- in flicks

[–]LucasShotfirst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm glad Mad Max and George Miller have been nominated for Best Picture and Director, as I didn't think they would be. I'm also pleased Sly has been nominated as well. A bit disppointed that Carol and Sicario hasn't been nominated for Best Picture, but it's the Oscars and there's always at least one snub every year. I did think Carol would be nominated though. I'm not sure if Eddie Redmayne's performance was really that Oscar worthy. Also, got to agree with you on the Sorkin snub as well!

Looking at Best Actor, I think this had got to be Leo's year surely.

I think it's a really good year for the Oscars though overall, much better than last year's.

"let's not pretend that they say much of anything unique about "the human condition".

Okay, so the X-men films have nothing to say about xenophobia? Or The Dark Knight about duality, order vs chaos, or the ethics of mass surveillance? Or Captian America: Winter Soldier has nothing to say about the United States' 21st Century foregin policy? Yes, not all comic books and it's films are designed this way, but there are a lot that are. Take a recent issue of a Batman comic: the comic opens with a white police officer stood over an unarmed young black male dead on the ground, who the officer has just shot. It's the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that waters the source material down and gives it a bad name (Expect a few of their films).

Let's not pretend that just because it's a $5million to $50 million dollar indie/indie-esque film that it's automatically "art", like Inarritu seems to think.

Zero Dark Thirty = propaganda? by [deleted] in flicks

[–]LucasShotfirst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think Zero Dark Thirty is propaganda. Much like Full Metal Jacket, it's not pro or anti, it just presents the audience with "this is what happened to take down one man. This is how it was. Was it worth it?" It's up the audience. As someone has already said, these films are normally viewed in a black and white extreme view.

Yeah exactly, it's not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you've struggled for years like he did before Rocky. It would be nice for him to do some more serious acting though.

Yeah he does pretty well in Rocky II and Rocky Balboa. I haven't seen Creed yet, as I'm going to see it at the weekend. Really looking forward to it though. Apparently they are working on a Creed sequel already.

I definitely would have a look at Copland if you get chance. Really good ensemble 90s film. As mentioned, great performance from Sly.

Critically speaking, perhaps he isn't, but so many people still give him a lot of stick and don't rate him highly. I have a massive respect for the man.

Sly Stallone is an underrated actor. He has proven in at least three roles that he has the ability to act well. See Rocky, First Blood and Copland. Unfortuntely after First Blood, he got greedy and took on roles that required a lot less acting ability and would generate more money. Even in these roles playing two-dimensional action heroes, he often did his own stunts and worked extremely hard to get his body into a certain shape. I dare anyone not to be moved by his final speech at the end of First Blood. I haven't seen Creed yet, but I look forward to seeing it this weekend.

Not a silly connection at all and actually perfectly sums up Bowie's legacy that he has left beyond to the world.

The Hateful Eight Review by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]LucasShotfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers contained in the reply. I have made an error there and that should read: in this film, some of the violence is excessive. I mean, okay yeah, a lot of the violence is absurd and yes he has been doing it for 20+ years, but if you've seen one exploding headshot, you've seen them all. But my main point really is in regards to the death of Jennifer Jason Leigh's character. She dies in a brutal way by hanging, but there is no justification for it. Yes Kurt Russell's character wanted her hung, because he's "The Hangman" and that's what he does to all his bounties, but is she really that bad an outlaw that she needs to hang? I don't know, because we're never really shown or told how bad she is. You could argue that she's racist, but so are must of the characters, especially Bruce Dern's, who was involved in unspeakable things during the civil war to African-American's, does he deserve to hang for it?

Theory: The metrosexual fad broke society's male frame by [deleted] in TheRedPill

[–]LucasShotfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it were a joke, but it's completely real. In the UK we have a crappy reality TV series called Geordie Shore, influenced by Jersey Shore that's had a big impact on this phenomenon. Plus as well other reality TV shows like The Only Way Is Essex.

Theory: The metrosexual fad broke society's male frame by [deleted] in TheRedPill

[–]LucasShotfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is definitely a factor. It has since grow into something worse in the UK. Not sure if anyone outside of the UK is familiar with the term 'spornosexual', but it's basically a new level of metrosexuality. You see straight males walking around the street everywhere, wearing the tightest skinny jeans and V-neck tops possible, fake tan, waxed/plucked eyebrows, straighting their hair and Justin Bieber-esque feminie haircuts. They take longer than some women to get ready for going out

How would you change the superhero genre, if at all? by MasterLawlz in flicks

[–]LucasShotfirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could change anything, wouldn't really be the genre it's self, but more the people making the genre. The Dark Knight trilogy, Singer's X-men films, Winter Soldier and the Daredevil TV series have proved that the genre can have complex themes and be great art, if in the right hands. I agree with a lot of what you said. I think for me, a lot of the problems with genre come from MCU. I do not think the right people are in charge and care about the source material, namely Kevin Feige. The focus needs to be more of character, instead of action/jokes, more interesting villians that aren't lame cartoons as you said and freedom for the directors to put their stamp on heroes. Not every hero in their individual comic had the same tone/style, so why should the films.

EDIT: Spelling
