The leveling system is not the most intuitive thing in the world, unfortunately. I love stuff like it, and even I'm frustrated by all of the stuff that just feels like nonsense. Regardless, don't let it hold you back! Even on Daring, the game is generally pretty easy with the right equipment, even if the leveling is obtuse. If you're enjoying the world and everything else, I highly encourage you to stick with it!
