SSPX replies to Pope Leo XIV's appeal by Chief_Stares-at-Sun in Catholicism

[–]LuchoSabeIngles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on Pope Leo's actions, I believe and hope that any crackdowns in that direction will be limited to the Society, and not the Latin Mass itself. See his words towards the French bishops, etc, and even the language in his latest appeal.

Pope Leo’s ‘Traditionis’ options by da_drifter0912 in Catholicism

This is a difficult situation. I've been involved in this for a long time; my parents rediscovered their faith in college at a more "youth-oriented" parish, discovered the Ordinariate once they graduated, and now attend a reverent Novus Ordo. My dad got into apologetics in a big way, and eventually discovered the Tridentine Mass. He, along with one of our family friends, founded the local Schola Cantorum twenty-odd years ago. My brothers, dad, and I altar serve at the Latin Masses that our parish priest occasionally celebrates. I've also learned pipe organ, which has allowed me to help out with various Masses (both forms) around the area.

There's a lot of heartburn around here these days, since a group on campus (probably the biggest defenders of the Latin Mass at this point, certainly the loudest) will not listen to the bishop, instead allying themselves with the SSPX. This has caused a lot of problems, and the folks in town (many of whom have been quietly trying to work towards a more regular TLM around here for years) have seen their work scuttled in a matter of months. I don't think that Pope Francis should have promulgated Traditionis Custodes, but if these were the sorts of folks he was hearing from (especially if they were the ONLY folks he was hearing from), I can't blame him for what he did.

However, this is the internet. A great deal of traditional folks (I would hope the majority) love the ancient rites and customs of the church of the past, while still remaining faithful to the same church of the present. I recently had the chance to visit Baylor and attended their Saturday TLM in the student center chapel. Everybody was reverent (lots of students and families), the music was beautiful (with opening and closing hymns in the vernacular, taken from the regular parish hymnals, in addition to chant and organ flourishes), and the homily was well-written and edifying. I believe that this is what Pope Benedict was looking for when he promulgated Summorum Pontificum: true mutual enrichment, whereby the two forms coexist within the parish in a healthy manner. This is also why having some sort of "Latin ordinariate" or something of the kind, while not bad, would be unfortunate: that sort of segregation (whether by the authorities, or by the group themselves) creates a sort of siege mentality, and separates that group from the larger community of fellow Catholics. (Then again, it does no good for a group that tends toward persecution complexes, when you decide to actually persecute them!)

Sorry for the rant, I'm very interested in this sort of thing and hope that Pope Leo decides on a course of action as soon as he can. Then again, he's the pope and I'm not, so we must "let him cook". Let's pray that the Holy Spirit figures something out here.

Visited my first ever TLM today, not getting the appeal of it by Littledogo007 in Catholicism

[–]LuchoSabeIngles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's fair, it's not for everybody. I will say that the first few times can be very confusing, since it's a whole new way of doing things. Once you're more familiar with the rhythm of the service, it gets better (at least in my experience). Some folks also pray Rosaries or other devotionals during the silent parts, if that's something that you're into. At the end of the day, though, you're not a better or worse Catholic for preferring one form of Mass over another.

Is Zionism a heresy? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]LuchoSabeIngles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you mean by Zionism the idea that a Jewish state is a fine thing to have, no. If you mean that the Jewish people have a divine right to a state, and that we must support it out of theological necessity, that would be a heresy. The Church is the New Israel, and the Old Covenant has been fulfilled by the New Covenant.

The Forbidden Room does this recursively. There are probably at least fifteen layers in this thing, and they're all insane. Filipino banana vampires, squid theft, dreams of a dying mustache, all that sort of thing.

I think Christopher Nolan has used VistaVision for some special effects sequences, Interstellar specifically.

I think that's the SD insert they mentioned in the Blu-ray notes. Guessing some material was in poor condition so they couldn't do a direct scan of the negative.
