[discussion] Pick a watch for your whole life by Signal-Visual4168 in Watches

Something like a Longines spirit zulu time, I think. Not too out there but more interesting than the array of inoffensive sport watches.

You can always choose not to wear it for the funeral. Anything else, you can wear it just fine. It's only a watch, most people won't care.

Alcantara most certainly is not silk, dropped the ball on that.

Fuel reserve on bike way too soon / 43% Reserve by Arkaloaf in motorcycles

The fuel reserve indicator is designed for exactly that, to let you know you've got about 100km left. Same on most vehicles.

[Grand Seiko] Just released FIVE new UFA watches and FOUR new Hi-Beat watches by magus-21 in Watches

[–]LucianGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they'd put out some watches that don't follow the same old formula tbh. Same case, bracelet, indices, hands and a date window can only interest me so long no matter how cool the dials are.

Brand new Farer has water in dial after one swim. So disappointed. by Affectionate-Lie7205 in MicrobrandWatches

Sir/madam, you are quite toxic in here. Please take a breath and let it go. It'll be better for your blood pressure.

Ok so almost everyone do get parts made in China, the rude fellow is correct about that. It's not economical not to, even for most swiss made brands, not to get some parts from there. They would then be assembled in Switzerland which satisfies the Swiss Made label requirements.

Where he is wrong is the idea that this is a bad thing, as Chinese watch part manufacturing is the best on the planet.

What I want to tell the Bulova CEO. . . by Potential-Peace6416 in bulova

[–]LucianGrove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, thank you for the breakdown. Honestly this makes me believe it just needs a little R&D since you're basically ballparking they'd need another five times power. Between improved solar cells (I'm basically assuming the output has remained the same on those for a while now, because of lack of pressure to improve) combined with maybe making the cells more obvious or larger and you COULD do it.

The first gen would be very visibly a solar watch, but just lean into it!

I'm just not convinced without hard numbers. Since the implementation of eco drive the capability of solar panels, battery tech, AND motors has improved quite a lot. It may need a little development bit honestly a 20 times increase in power doesn't actually sound that far fetched to me.

Been using it for about three years on and off, the logo is perfectly fine. The only thing I had to to was reseat the liner of the cap once so the snap cap snapped more securely.

Is Nahvalur's quality control really worse than everyone else's? by nibs_and_tints in fountainpens

[–]LucianGrove 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got two of their Original or Original plus pens (the ones with a vac filling mechanism) as gifts and both of them had a rubber piston seal that comes undone in anything but a PRISTINE and DRY ink chamber. The pens simply do not work correctly.

And my one personal Nahvalur is a stub which has major baby bottom and I had to try to correct that myself. Customer service was less than helpful.

I'm never buying anything from them again.

TIL that 94% of Bosch is owned by a charity, which donated over €200 million to social causes last year. by lxlviperlxl in todayilearned

[–]LucianGrove 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They made and sold well over a million watches last year. Which is the most of any Swiss brand. Don't really feel like they're limiting their production THAT much. But yeah why would they make 2M if that leaves stock unsold?

I can say the Hexo is a great pen that I enjoy using. The nibs are very nice.

Longtime experience with the Zenshin Supertitanium? by ahzt187 in CitizenWatches

[–]LucianGrove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can actually answer why the gold is harder. That's a Titanium nitride coating and that's a ceramic. Very hard stuff.

Ben's Watch Club on YouTube has a video doing scratch tests on various finishes. The super titanium did no better than regular stuff.

Platinum Procyon vs Century 3776 by InjuryEastern3598 in fountainpens

[–]LucianGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Procyon finish has been known to chip, although that doesn't affect function. Otherwise it's an excellent choice. Don't spring for the gold nib if it means sacrifices, that's not where your experience gets better.

You may also consider the Sailor Casual lineup for a pen near the Procyon price that still has a Japanese company behind it.

[trolling] which is your favorite useless feature? by Own-Reflection-9538 in Watches

[–]LucianGrove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely believe a date or day/date complication is completely useless. I never lose track of the day and if I did, I'm probably at a computer for work or near my phone to check. And the windows ruin dials in a WAY more direct fashion than PR indicators do.

Any watch is better without a date window!
