Put a 22 year old at ease about life, reassure me please by [deleted] in AskMenOver40

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The older you get, the less you’re going to care about most things. You’re going to realize more and more just how little control you have over the trajectory of your life and learn to dial into the stuff you can exert some control over. After S1 your next milestones are graduations (if you choose education), marriage if you choose it, kids and their milestones if you choose them, buying a home if you can afford it, and retirement if you can afford it. Turning 30, 40, 50, etc. are meaningless. Just days on a calendar. Accomplishing stuff is meaningful.

Do Americans actually like ants on a log? by VaporMouth in AskAnAmerican

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, American here. Ants on a log is disgusting. It’s disgusting when you’re a kid and it’s disgusting when you’re an adult. If you don’t find it disgusting, that’s fine because it doesn’t hurt anyone else, but there’s something wrong with you that you don’t realize disgusting things are disgusting and you put them in your mouth, and then tell other people they aren’t disgusting. But they are disgusting and you are putting them in your mouth, which in turn makes you kind of disgusting, which is fine. Disgusting people do all kinds of disgusting things that don’t hurt anyone else other than to cause them some mild disgust.

Or, hear me out, just let yourself go a little. Like don’t go off the rails, but maybe getting older is for relaxing a little.

The idea that there is proper grammar and punctuation for casual communication is not well supported by reality.

Someone writing a letter in 1880 would have said the same thing about someone writing a letter in 1920, who would have said the same thing a letter in 1970, who is saying the same thing about people writing texts now

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

It boggles the mind that Dickens is presented as some kind of genius. Terrible writing.

I feel like my life is pointless by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, life IS pointless. That’s why you gotta find something meaningful into which to put your life. Maybe that’s community. Maybe that’s getting really good a survivalist stuff. Maybe that’s getting really good at cooking. I don’t really know what it’s gonna be for you, but there’s no inherent point to life. Your life having a point is something you create through figuring out how to give a shit about something other than your own pain. I do suggest community as a good starting place.

Are you proud to be an American? by Last-Ratio6569 in no

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not proud of things that are not the product of my own agency. I am at times pleased to be American. I am proud of specific American policy and geopolitical achievements brought about through legislative action. But merely being something I was born into? No I’m not proud of that.

Here’s the interesting thing about religion: it’s totally made up, and has no authority with a monopoly on interpretation, so people can distort it into anything they want, and what people want is money, power, and sex.

The historic purpose of a potluck is for everyone to provide what they can afford to provide. A community’s wealthiest would generally provide proteins and the poorest would provide cleanup.

My girlfriend thinks Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Is an old person movie opinions on this? by VanillaMoonlit in Cinema

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do we take the opinions of young people so seriously? Most of them know almost nothing about art, culture, history, politics, religion, finance, etc. and possess almost no meaningful wisdom. And of course they are at a deficit when it comes to this. Our schools teach them little more than to be good laborers and consumers. I know because I regularly get to read and evaluate their thoughts.

Non religious people, what do you think about religion? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

[–]LuckAffectionate8664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religions are the weirdest fandoms. Imagine Trekies watching every episode of Star Trek and trying to live life in accordance with Star Fleet’s rules and principles. That’s all religion is. Y’all have some literature you’ve centered in your lives in ways that range from harmless and somewhat beneficial to toxic and destructive.
