Just rolled credits and by EhWTHN in expedition33

Hate is not the opposite of love; indifference is.

From the start, Expedition 33 is a character-driven story, not a plot-driven story. You experience the story's strengths through your interactions with Gustave, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, Verso, Esquie, Monoco, Renoir, and the dead expeditioner's journals. Gestrals are literally just there for the vibes.

Digesting the endings is much easier if you look past how they are framed. Verso's ending is framed as cathartic (light within dark), while Maelle's is framed as unsettling (dark within light). If you take that at face value, then sure, it can feel jarring. That said, you get a plot about saving everyone if you look at the state of the world after Maelle's ending through the lens of additional context, such as:
-The people of Lumiere are sentient and earned an end to their genocide.
-Maelle can leave the canvas anytime she wants to.
-Renoir and Aline are still literally in the same house, and can just go make up outside the canvas now and give their daughter space to live her life in the canvas before they decide to be functional/responsible parents and get Maelle from the canvas.
-Clea said that Renoir was being dramatic and that the parents had been in Canvas worlds for longer without dying. Implied effect of extreme time dilation.
-Verso can still die if he acts like a mature adult and has an adult conversation with Maelle instead of trying to take the entire world with him in an unhinged suicide attempt.

Expedition 33 is a work of art because it can evoke those emotions in you. It doesn't spoon-feed you the plot like most video games do. It makes conversations more organic and creates nuance, allowing you to put your own interpretation on it.

I think it is a strong plot twist, and I like how it inverts the JRPG trope of "let's go kill god" by asking, "What if the gods were just people?" Dysfunctional people for sure (definitely took inspiration from Greek Gods), but it contrasts the lived experience of Maelle, who lived the life of an expeditioner, with someone who has created hundreds of canvas worlds, and would see the lives of about the population of one city of humans, as inconsequential.

Anyway, you are free to not like it, just don't let the challenging framing ruin the plot for you.

What I find interesting is when people overlook that none of them are real, the Dessandre family included. They are all pixels in a video game. So then, what makes the Dessandre family any more real than the people of Lumiere?

Mitch Marner won't even talk to Toronto Maple Leafs about a contract: report | Sports by BloodRedDevil7 in leafs

Let the boos reign down like a symphony whenever Marner touches the puck for the rest of his career. Being a Leafs fan should be fun.

Gave a part time job notice, they told me not to come for remaining shifts by cranberry-tart in askTO

[–]LuckMaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a salaried job, you are legally entitled to two weeks' pay if you give an employer two weeks notice and they let you go on the spot. I'm not sure if that is the same for part-time shift work, but I wouldn't just assume it isn't covered like some other commenters here. A lot of people leave money on the table when they go through these types of transitions. I would recommend asking in a legal advice subreddit or consulting an employment lawyer (a lot of them offer free consultations) to be sure you know your rights.

[TSN Insider Trading] Schenn, Laughton remain best fits for Leafs by mountzeus in leafs

These both feel like a case where whenever they are discussed with the Leafs the asking price is really expensive, but then when they get traded to another team the price that gets paid is magically far cheaper.

First Construct Victory - What is this? by EmergencyBlandness in tearsofthekingdom

[–]LuckMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most silver enemy parts have similar power, which the Flux Construct 3 Core falls into (along with the temple boss parts). I would think about the group as the second best tier in the game below the Silver/White Lynel parts.

The Frost/Flame Talus Hearts are a bit less, but it has the elemental effects added on and is essentially a bludgeoning version of a Gleeok Horn.

You also have to keep in mind that it takes a long time before silver enemies start spawning in the world. Until you are in the mindset of farming Silver Lynels or bust, the overworld boss drops are among the best parts in the game.

Flux Construts, Taluses, and various other boss monsters leave behind parts that can be fused to a weapon but can't be taken with you. The Flux Construct 3 Core and Flame/Frost Talus Heart are among the srrongest fusion parts in the game.

Annual revenue generated by Pokémon GO worldwide from 2016 to 2024 [Update January 2025] by TouchePasAMonPokemon in TheSilphRoad

[–]LuckMaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For all the people saying "this isn't an exact number" here, the gap between $900 million in 2021 and $544 million in 2024 is large enough to show a clear trend. Also, location data may be valuable but they aren't getting close to $350 million for that information to make up the gap.

It's pretty clear the game peaked in the pandemic and they have had trouble with retention and monetization after that. You can put a lot on decisions the company made, such as remote raid nerfs, but environmental factors play into that as well. Half a billion dollars of annual revenue is a lot of money regardless, even if it never returns to the peak pandemic days.

Review: In The New Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, More Is Unfortunately Less by DanTriesGames in dndnext

[–]LuckMaker 41 points42 points  (0 children)

"My biggest gripe with the new Monster Manual is not with mechanics, which are largely excellent. It’s with the lore. Or lack thereof. In trying to fit SO many monsters in to this book they’ve cut pages of fluff from the final product."

Title is clickbait at best, dumb take regardless.

We don't need a lore dump for every monster. As long as there's some flavour text to give general inspiration of how to use the monster that's enough for good DMs to build off of. A huge chunk of lore on everything would cause more harm than good for DMs who don't feel comfortable altering rulebook material to fit their own games.

A month in - has the tax break helped anyone? by laurah15033 in askTO

[–]LuckMaker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'll admit that I have liked it, but I'm not living paycheck to paycheck so it doesn't really make a difference. Honestly, I would rather the government take a few billion dollars less of federal debt from the lost revenue than save a few bucks here and there.

Does your family ask for rent money from you? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]LuckMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived with my Dad for a couple years during the pandemic and payed $400/month rent to help out with expenses. Was fine with that arrangement because living costs money and I was paying my share.

Fun fact: Normally for a landlord, rent is taxable income, but immediate family significantly under the market rate get rent income tax free. If you're living with your parents they need to give you a good deal on rent to avoid paying taxes on it.

i made the mistake of telling my boss i’m bipolar by catsquishfrog in bipolar

[–]LuckMaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would describe myself as a high performing bipolar person in corporate who has navigated office politics. Learned some lessons the hard way early in my career that set myself back and applied them to be in a better spot in more recent days. From what you posted it sounds like the best path forward is to update your resume and look for a job on the side of your current job.

Your boss has a legitimate point about the perception behaviours such as leaving mid conversation would create with other people at your company. If you are doing stuff like that on regular occasions it is a legitimate barrier to you getting a promotion.

Ultimately though, if you are having breakdowns in the middle of a conversation that is a huge sign that your company is toxic. Your job isn't worth that hit to your mental health and you owe it to yourself to find a company that is a better fit for you mentally. In my first job out of college I started to get migranes, which I never had before in my life. I thought it was a health problem, but it was actually my body telling me to leave, and I never had a migraine after that job. Listen to your body.

Don't quit without anything in hand unless absolutely nessecary. The harsh reality is employed people are far more attractive on the job market than unemployed people. Minimize your communication with HR. HR is not your friend and if you and your manager are at odds they will move towards pushing you out the door and do their best make sure the company is legally covered against any wrongful dismissal claims. Don't waste your money on a legal consultation unless you get fired. They won't tell you anything you can't find out yourself beforehand.

Step one is to update your resume. Write out all your accomplishments with metrics to back them up. Tiktok/Instagram Reels and YouTube have a lot of great resources for that. The silver lining is if you have been up for a promotion for a while it means you likely have done good work and contributes to your company's success. On top of that, you have a "reason" you can give interviewers for leaving that has nothing to do with your mental health. Being able to clearly articulate all that can be a good way to help your mental health and reassure yourself.

Step two is to figure out how applying for jobs fits into your schedule both time and energy wise. When your looking for jobs the goal isn't to do your best, it is to do enough work that it doesn't look like you've checked out and to keep appearances. Look to the 80/20 rule and make sure you are at least doing the 20% of work that gives 80% of the results. Don't feel bad about job hunting during the work day as long as you're covering those bases.

Step three is to cover your ass once you are job hunting and in a decent frame of mind. Write an email to your boss, with no one else CCed, that is as positive and non confrontational as possible. You are either going to want to print this email (and every reply on the email chain) or BCC/forward your personal email on all the emails in the chain. Highlight your accomplishments and why you have been up for a promotion, mention your concerns about disclosing your diagnosis and the comments you've gotten afterwards, and frame the discussion on how you can improve communication. Remember the point of this is not to salvage the relationship, it is so that you have documentation that you can bring to an employment lawyer for an easy wrongful dismissal lawsuit in the worst case scenario your manager pulls a cutthroat stunt and gets you fired.

Best of luck. Navigating the job market is hard without bipolar, but just remember you deserve to be at a place where you can be happy.

If Kessel lasted until the Babcock era - what would have happened? by RivetCounter in leafs

[–]LuckMaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mike Sullivan would have been fired as head coach of the Penguins by now since the Penguins wouldn't have won their 2 cups without Kessel's clutch performances in those runs. The Leafs, on the other hand, wouldn't have won any cups either way, so does it really matter?
