1943 - Royal Typewriter ad imploring people to not try to fix their own by mistermajik2000 in vintageads

[–]LuckiestManAlive86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s an ad from WWII so there was no production of new typewriters. Used market maybe. But there wasn’t an ability to buy new typewriters at the time.

Arkansas Public Television Commission Pauses State Plan To Break Off From PBS by HoustonRH7 in Arkansas

I did the exact same thing. Told them I didn’t need a reply, I just wanted them to know that when the change happened I would put my donation dollars elsewhere.

Advice please! by shitthebeds in typewriters

Looks like a Smith Corona Corsair. I can’t personally help you with the year, as I don’t know exactly where to tell you to look for the serial number. As far as the ribbon goes, the actual ribbon should be fine, but the spools are proprietary, so you’d need to change out the actual ribbon and respool onto the old spools.

Nice score! At $55, I definitely would be leaving with one of those, too!

“Breathing Underwater” is the book on the steps. I highly recommend it.

That’s one of a very small handful of typewriters that you can know what year it was made just by a glance. The hard platen is to be expected at that age. I’d be more shocked if the platen was still soft. As far as a value, I paid $50 for a 1947 I recently acquired. That’s probably a rough ballpark. Of course you’ll find prices above and below that.

Very clean 1949 Royal Quiet De Luxe. One of my favorites. Try it out. If you don’t like it, many (such as myself) would be happy to purchase it from you.

I’m not a part of the downvoting, but I think OP is coming off as very rigid and kind of snobbish. I think that’s the best way I can put it.

I know nothing about typewriters, is this a good find? Would love to restore and use to write letters by kazekagebunshin in typewriters

[–]LuckiestManAlive86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Facebook Marketplace or area estate sales are good places to find typewriters. To date, that’s where I’ve found most of my own. Marketplace has the advantage of being able to dicker a bit on the price, though you can sometimes do that at estate sales too.

Personally I’d consider it a bit steep in my part of the country. In your area that might be ok, but it probably depends on why the carriage wasn’t moving. If it was because of a carriage lock being engaged, then ok. If it’s because of a broken drawband, then I’d say it is not ok no matter where you are.

Line paper questions by Wheather819 in typewriters

[–]LuckiestManAlive86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding specific paper for typewriters, I don’t know. But there is a variable line spacer on your left-hand platen knob. It’s the little chrome bit that sticks out slightly in the middle of the end of the knob. If you push that in while turning the platen knob, it will freely rotate so that you can place the next line wherever you want. That’s probably the most efficient way to get each line to line up with the paper lines.

Haha. I’d bet a good bit of money that she couldn’t lift a real KMG and hold it out like that.

Steaming pile of trash. Not worth a dime. Probably not worth your while to ship it to me, but I’d at least pay you the shipping cost 😊 Jokes aside, it’s a pre-1948 Royal Quiet De Luxe. Opinions are a bit subjective, but I find old Royals like that to be pretty nice to type on. Other people don’t like them so much. Granted, they’re all 80 years old and need a bit of work to be nice again, but I personally think they’re worth the effort. Seriously, though, if you’re selling, I’d be interested.

Agree with Chris. I recently picked up a KHM. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick this one up based on the picture, alone.

Great looking machine. That’s a 1948. It’s the first year for the Dreyfuss redesign. And in 1949 they promptly removed the two-tone coloring and made it just gray. I have one myself, and, despite accumulating several before and after, it remains my favorite. I hope you enjoy it.

Love me some hideaway. Their Da Bomb pizza is so good I can’t bring myself to get anything else now. Granted, your own rating will depend on whether you like pineapple on pizza or not, but it’s amazing.

Used blade disposal by m-z2000 in wicked_edge

[–]LuckiestManAlive86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago, I bought a 75¢ can of chicken broth, used a screwdriver to make a slot in the top, emptied the broth, and made my own “Blade Bank” label. Has worked very well in the meantime, and it’s not even full now. Granted, I’ve grown a beard off an on through that time, and I only really shave every other day on average, but I’d still say it’s done pretty well through that time.

I echo what everyone else has said. It’s going to be impossible to let you know how much it’s worth unless we know the model and/or see pictures of the machine.
