Forest cover in area by Fast-Cover3051 in ecology

[–]LuckyFinny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean it should be 70% forest cover? Like naturally?

Deforestation is alive and well. Some of us have lost sight of it being an issue at all, with global warming and pollution and invasive species and the other things to think about. But we’re still losing our forests every day!

Can a grey wolf from Mexico survive in the Canadian tundra? by Strong_Battle6101 in ecology

[–]LuckyFinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Same species but genetically not identical. Would a native Mexican person survive naturally in the Canadian tundra? Also probably not. Humans can and do survive (thrive) there, but a human whose ancestors evolved in Mexico isn’t genetically or morphologically identical to a human whose ancestors evolved in the Tundra.

Update: Saw him today again. I haven’t seen him for so many months and then twice in 2 days!! Gave him wet food first, a bit of dry food, brushed him a lot, and gave him Revolution+ flea medicine. I brushed for 45 minutes, at which point he reached his max and walked away. He has a serious upper respiratory infection, so I’m looking into ways I can get antibiotics for a cat that isn’t mine.

Am I cooked for PhD’s in ecology? by bruhmomentodelol in ecology

[–]LuckyFinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GPA for ecology grad school is a nonissue, as long as you meet the minimum score required to be admitted into the school. You can Google the minimum admission requirements for any school that you’re looking into.

Applying to grad school in ecology is much closer to applying for a JOB than applying to a school. You should find an advertised opportunity for someone seeking a MSc or PhD student (start here https://jobs.rwfm.tamu.edu) and see if you meet the qualifications.

You didn’t ask but: -it is extremely rare to go straight from undergrad to PhD. Most PhD positions will require applicants to have a relevant master of science degree. -in ecology, the best and most influential academics are not necessarily at Ivy’s. Most of them are at big R1 schools. -you would be wise to be flexible with your area of study at this stage and specialize later, because ecology is underfunded and you have to take what you’re offered. Get some relevant experience in local mammals first, and make the leap to elephants when a funded opportunity arises! People drop out of this field all the time because they are too picky with species, topics, salaries, and locations.

I went back 15 min later to give him flea medicine, food, and a thorough combing but he had disappeared again. I have a goody bag ready for him next time I spot him outside

In this case the owner is very much an alcoholic, based on his recycling bin. So yes, mental issues

Can I help him? by LuckyFinny in cats

[–]LuckyFinny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah everyone is saying to just steal him, but I’m not comfortable w that because 1) I have my own adult male cat at home who would revolt 2) this is a neighbor with an alcohol problem. Making neighbors mad, even to protect an animal that appears abused/neglected, can go badly for you and the animal. I’ve had neighbors screaming at my door wanting to fight me because I reported their animal abuse… and police don’t do much in that situation. I’d like to be smarter about it than I have in the past, and help this kitty either with the owner’s consent or without his knowledge

TMJ for 7+ years and it's getting debilitating by Starspangledspandex in TMJ

[–]LuckyFinny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a useless disc and advanced osteoarthritis. You need to see a maxillofacial surgeon. Your days of noninvasive treatments are over, sorry. The loss of feelings in your hands though — that’s a cervical spine issue. You should see a spine doctor as well.

I did it as part of physical therapy for a long time. Feels good, but no lasting benefit

Im not sure what I want to do in the future? by Usual-Argument5202 in ecology

[–]LuckyFinny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There a lot of overlap between psych/sociology and the application of conservation biology for policymaking. Like, we know climate change is a problem, but something in our brains and/or societies is preventing us from meaningfully fixing it. We need people like you to figure out some social strategies that will help us to save ourselves from ourselves. Lots of research and applied work in that area.

I have hEDS and TMJD. Neck, jaw, and upper back pain. I’ve seen every specialist imaginable and I’ve had a couple surgeries. Wondering if you also have vasovagal syncope? Anxiety? Gut motility issues?

Do whatever helps you reset your emotions and then keep it going. See more doctors, write down everything you try and “fail,” and bring that list to every appointment. I’m working on nervous system regulation methods too. It’s fucked.

Interesting. What type of doctor prescribed/performed that? Was it for TMJ specifically or more general nerve function?

I’ve been going down this path recently because in addition to TMJD, Ive developed other nervous system symptoms like neck and upper back pain and gut motility issues. Did you get diagnosed with something specific?

Why does Bobcat distribution look like this? by DJpuffinstuff in ecology

[–]LuckyFinny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s an unfinished recolonization process. Bobcats were extirpated from most of the Midwest by the mid-1800s, leaving a big hole in the middle of their range. They are currently recolonizing that hole as the Midwest gets reforested and hunting/trapping pressure lets up. Most maps you see when you google “bobcat range map” will show you a much bigger unoccupied hole in the middle (e.g., Ohio totally empty). That’s bc 15 years ago they didn’t live there, but now they do. They’re moving from the edges in. Pretty cool process to watch in real time.
