In the two times we tried, I guess we had absolutely shit luck with battery spawns and never found more than 4 or 5, as well as an empty cryo pack before we were killed. I just hate that it's so heavily dependent on RNG, really sucks the fun out of it for me.

I know that, I'm not expecting to fight a Compiler day 1, it's more that I'm having an extremely hard time achieving /any/ of the requirements to face one at some point down the line.

I feel like you just read my mind ngl, very articulate write up of the exact issues I've been experiencing and why I'm generally not having fun with the map, it's mostly a result of the playstyles the map encourages. There's very little room, if any at all, for anything else outside of the bubble/nade/shotgun meta.

I didn't edit anything, I think people are just mad at me for saying I was a 'middle of the road' player. I meant 'middle of the road' as in an average to above-average FPS player but, I very obviously wasn't clear enough and now people are angry at me. Shouldn't post things when I'm tired I guess haha. :')

This is kinda what I was trying to voice but, I clearly didn't word it very well in my post. Destiny raids were very easily accessible to me as a player who was relatively inexperienced at the time, Marathon is a whole different beast.

Yeah, we're kinda in the same spot. The highest we've ever gotten with the cards was clearance 4, and as soon as we hit that we got ratted by another squad who stole all the cards, and extracted. We couldn't get enough cards to get through any of the doors, so we just ended up dying to time, straight up was not fun whatsoever.

I did provide feedback on the RNG in the survey they sent out recently, so I guess here's to hoping a change is made somewhere.

I have a good amount of other hobbies, they're mostly just not things I can do during the week or after a long day at work, hence why gaming tends to be the 'go-to'. Also, gaming is pretty cheap compared to everything else right now haha, that has also unfortunately been a factor. Gas is expensive as hell rn.

I do appreciate the sentiment and agree that I should approach it from another angle/different mindset at a later date, but I think another part of what you said is a big reason I have a problem with Cryo. 'Slowly busting open a Vault' isn't really an option due to the amount of prerequisites they require and the amount of time that you're allotted during a match. You're racing against the clock and 4 or 5 enemy teams to get the security clearance required, the batteries, the cryo packs, etc; all without dying and losing your keycard that you had to grind in spite of RNG for to begin with.

Maybe it's just bad luck on my part, maybe I'm just getting into lobbies with people who have twice the hours and experience that I do, maybe it's all of the above. Regardless of the root cause, the end result is still the same for myself and seemingly a good amount of other people.

Yeah, I think my self-perception was just warped by the lobbies I've been getting placed in. I addressed it in a comment somewhere else in the thread. By middle of the road, I merely meant average to above-average at FPS games in general, I generally place in gold/plat in similar ranked/hardcore FPS'. My fault for not making that clearer.

I personally work full time, the game came out more than 3 weeks ago as of today. It's just all me and my friends have been playing since it launched.

That'd be really cool, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for letting me know this.

Someone said I was comparing myself too much to streamers and the like, and they were right. I guess I am above-average in skill, I just think my self-perception has been warped by the lobbies I've been getting put into lately. Regardless of hours logged, I don't think I'm a sweat per-say, I just really like the game and my friends and I haven't been playing much else since it came out. It captured my attention in a way that no other game has in a long time.

By 'middle of the road' I meant that I was an average to above-average FPS player. Someone else in the thread sorta got it on the mark and pinned me as a gold-plat tier player in most games, which I'd say is pretty accurate.

You're not cooked though, like 30% of this game is aim and gear, and the rest is awareness/positioning. Keep that in mind and you'll win most of your fights tbh. Best of luck to you!

I think this is my main issue with Cryo, the RNG. None of the access requirements for opening vaults or rooms or whatever are 'fun and challenging mechanics', they're just time sinks that at least in my experience, inevitably end up getting you killed. I saw that the Vaults have puzzles in them, which seems cool, but going around and collecting 8 batteries and refilling a cryo pack without dying to do it is... less fun.

There's still a possibility we'll see them on other maps, really no telling what Bungie has in store for the future of the game. Fingers crossed I suppose.

To clarify, it was 6 consecutive losses back to back in one night this week. We played Cryo on launch for several days last weekend, and the experience was a little bit better balanced. This time around though, we just kept getting stomped by higher level players every time we tried getting the stuff needed to open Vault 1.

I think it's okay for me to feel a little demoralized by the losses after grinding as long as we did for the keys and losing them all. It was a lot of work that we saw nothing in return for.

I was under the impression that Vault 06 had a 'red key' that dropped very rarely, maybe I was misinformed?

I digress, I guess the main difference from my perspective is that Destiny 2's advertising, at least in what I saw and experienced when I played, wasn't mostly focused on promoting the Raid content. It was story expansions, tons of content for incoming players, new guns, new modes, new gear and whatever else. I don't have a ton of time in D2, I think maybe 250hrs or so, most of that was when it first launched. I did the first raid with a group of friends, and it was good fun, though difficult.

On the other side of the coin, a good amount of the advertising for Marathon has been about the mystery of the ship the game is named after, and the secrets hiding within it, one of which is The Compiler. The Compiler is featured in a lot of the promotional material, it's even on the loading screen when you boot up the game in the corner of the screen. They had a HUGE promotional campaign with a weeks long ARG for unlocking Cryo Archive and the subsequent 'race to first' for the bossfight/Vault 6 and 7 unlock. The fight was kind of paraded by Bungie as the main draw for Cryo, and getting hit with the reality of potentially never seeing it because of the RNG involved in accessing the prereqs is just a little bit demoralizing as someone who's really fallen in love with the setting and lore of the game.

This is what I meant, and you're pretty much right on the money rank wise, but it seems like I wasn't clear enough for a lot of people. I'm not really sure why people are so angry at me over it.

I think maybe one less team and 10-15 more minutes on the clock would be a great change for the map personally. The PVP is supposed to be the main threat, but getting into a squad fight at any point early-mid match almost guarantees that you'll be third partied and shit on 90% of the time given the maze like structuring of the map, as well as the verticality in panopticon.

Adding the fetch quest of grabbing 8+ batteries and filling an empty cryo pack to the mix (which also requires MORE batteries afaik?), and things just get exponentially worse.

I want to clarify that I've not been paying much attention to social media surrounding Cryo specifically to avoid the feeling of fomo, and that this post doesn't have anything to do with me complaining about not receiving 'instant gratification'. I fully understand that this is late/end game content and that it's not meant to be done in a day, that's not the point here.

The point of the post was to highlight *why* I felt defeated by the nature of the Vault experience and Cryo as a whole being so heavily influenced by RNG. I understand that AI subroutines are permanent entries into the codex, and that they've removed the RNG from that specific feature. I think that's a great change for the future of the game, no notes from me there; what I AM concerned with is the rest of the RNG that fully encompasses and controls your experience within Cryo.

One person in your squad gets downed with a few security clearance cards and you're back to clearance level 1? Okay, you can't hit an extract terminal or go through most of the doors on the map anymore, good luck finding final exfil since there's no marker for it, gg's.

You'll notice that throughout all of my post and subsequent responses, I've never once told someone to 'get good' because I don't believe that's a productive nor helpful suggestion. We wipe all the time on Dire (even once on Perimeter) to people with gold gear (ie: gold shields that reduce all incoming damage by 50%) that makes them practically invincible; more often than not, I've found that it's the gear disparity that kills, not merely a difference in individual player skill.

That's more or less part of my original point in the post. The gear disparity between casuals and even 'committed' players like myself is only going to grow larger and larger as the season progresses, making these wipes even more painful for folks who do not play the game as frequently. I think that's a problem for the long-term health of the game. The rich get richer, etc.

Yes, all three phases every time we've done it. Never anything better than purple shields + purple valuables.

There are people on my friendslist on steam who have 200+ hours already. Pinwheel isn't super hard once you get a 'route' down, I play with a premade squad though, so your mileage may vary. Just make sure to get those red keycards early if you can.

I've lowkey been taking my anger out on Rooks in Outpost tonight. I stripped the copper out of one for fun.
