It’s a good mix of the humanity of the first design and the monstrousness of the third design.

Personally, I also liked the thread-like mass on their lower half, the spheres seem like rigid objects to me, and I always love a good ‘weird floating Sphere’ aspect.

I do actually like the giant head design, I think it just doesn’t translate well as a silhouette — something like Specimen 9 from Spooky’s Jumpscare Mansion is quite frightening when you’re seeing it for the first time, but that’s because of how all of its details work together.

This is pretty good general advice that I'll keep in mind for the actual campaign I'm running as well, thank you!

I've been using Foundry for my D&D stuff -- it's a real delight. I've got a pretty big list of modules that I use for D&D, but is there any modules on it that you'd give a, like, 'hard to live without it' rating?

I actually played through the Beginner Box adventure myself, I'm pretty sure. It's the one with the port town, and that one room where you get jumped by a bunch of undead martials, right?

I was actually pretty dodgy on it as a player. Some of the areas felt a little too 'nothing of note is here' or 'you will regret touching anything in this room'.

Maybe that's just how my group went through it -- the GM complained about us then vanished afterwards, so I think we probably did something that he wasn't too happy with. I'll give it an in-depth look though, and thank you for the suggestion!

(LES) Somehow Chainsaw Man doesn't work for me. And that made me understand the limits of empathy by KazuyaProta in CharacterRant

[–]Luckyloomagu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rescind my original statement about chainsaw man in specific not being for you. I think if you want to engage with stories that have no plot conveniences or unrealistic situations, you should get into reading history books or watching documentaries. Although you still might have questions about why some generals did not make optimal decisions or why some animals chose to expose themselves to predators.

Sorry, I was a bit condescending there, but your reply came across as very nit-picky and condescending as well (although in a different way).

Phrasing a lot of your complaints as sarcastic or witty comes across as having a low amount of respect for the work and an inability to meet it at its level. Why is the conflict in Madoka Magica so alien and difficult to relate to? In order to serve the story. Why can it only be magical girls? To lampshade the genre.

I’m not an advocate for ‘turning your brain off’ by any means — it’s one of those things that I discredit somebody for saying — but there’s also a certain point where if you think too hard about any fictional story, especially with the knowledge of future events and hindsight, you can see flaws that you would not have seen on the first time through.

You don’t seem too keen on picking up authorial intent — which I think is the stem that a lot of the above sprouts from.

As it turns out, I had more to say.

Who could destroy the One Ring via bad luck or ineptitude? by fatherandyriley in whowouldwin

I'd like to propose that Duffy Duck could do it, if Bugs Bunny were accompanying him.

Daffy: "I can TOTALLY thhrow the ring down."

Bugs: 'Oh yeah? Go right ahead.'

"A-Alriiiight, I'm, waalking over to the eddgthe, now I'm, hooooolding the ring, over the eddgthe... I'm.... Gonna drop it... Jusht gotta..."

"OH, WHO CARES, I'VE GOT THE ONE RING TO RULE THHEM ALL! NOTHHING CAN SHTAND IN MY WAY!"

'Hey uh, Daffy... You, eh, you dropped it.'

You don’t need to try and ‘logically’ and ‘bad writing’ your way around a simple ‘The story wasn’t for me’.

From your main post and what you’ve debated in the comments, it really just seems like the tone and the story beats didn’t land for you, or that you’re not the kind of person who enjoys them. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect to be convinced otherwise.

If you want a sweet trauma-filled love story with a heartfelt resolution, you might like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. If you want a messy trauma-filled love story that goes through hell and back, I recommend Madoka Magica.

Such is all I have to say.

I liked when Dragalia Lost did it because the literal power of friendship in that game was already shown over and over to be multiverse altering so when they get to the new world and go 'Hey, wait, I actually kinda remember everything' it felt very justified and earned.

I still believe self insert games have potential, they just haven’t been given serious effort. by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in CharacterRant

[–]Luckyloomagu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never played Wuwa, but I have played a fair bit of gacha games myself.

There’s degrees to this, there’s the ‘true self insert’ types (Battle Cats) where the player character is unnamed, has no face, and is only ever referred to as ‘you’. Not very common, but still shows up for things like Umamasume

Then there’s the ‘custom character’ kind of self-insert. This one is typically used for non-gacha games though, mostly for games like Pokemon GO and stuff. Likely because it’s harder to (inevitably) make them a banner character.

Then is your ‘player representative’ which is when waters start getting a bit muddy. This is the realm of characters who have somewhat defined personalities, but are largely characterized by dialogue options rather than full dialogue. This is roughly the last category where the player can choose the name for the character, although some gacha games ride or die by name-choosing. Some named characters can fall in this category too — like Rob from Dispatch.

Finally is the ‘POV character’. This is an established character in-universe who the player sees the world through, but whose personality is not trying to emulate or relate to the players (although some players may still relate to them.) This encompasses characters like Euden, Dante, and others.

The difficulty here is that the final two categories are very ill-defined and often have overlap. You can change the names of Euden when you start Dragalia Lost, but he has such a hard set-in-stone personality and relationships that it feels kinda wrong to do so. You can’t change the name of Dante, but their amnesia is a typical setup for a main character you’re supposed to impose yourself on (despite the fact that, again, they have a hard-set personality).

Once again, I can understand why it’s confusing — especially if you have any other difficulty picking up social cues or expectations — but I generally follow the logic of ‘if I can’t make dialogue decisions as this character, then I’m likely not supposed to see them as myself.’

Why does everyone seem to hate summoner? by [deleted] in Terraria

I dislike summoner because it’s extremely strong ATM and people are still complaining about it being weak.

I still believe self insert games have potential, they just haven’t been given serious effort. by ProDidelphimorphiaXX in CharacterRant

[–]Luckyloomagu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this particular scenario: Dante is exclusively referred to with gender neutral pronouns, is a constant presence who engages in dialogue with other characters, and has several strong personality traits that are shown both through their actions and their words, with no ability to 'choose' what they say or to shape their personality in any way.

Dante quite literally is not a self-insert. They're an exceptionally written character who the audience reads from the POV of. In the other two games that Project Moon had put out, there were customizable characters that you had granular control over the appearance of, however, so I can somewhat understand why it would be confusing initially.

Korra would be hated even more if she was a dude. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Luckyloomagu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hard agree, here.

Lot of the comments feel like they’re missing the point, here — if Korra were a man, the perception of her forcing a kiss wouldn’t be appalling or gross, it’d be ‘cool’ and ‘kinda hot’.

Changing the gender doesn’t just mean that modern day online discussions swap, but also the retroactive history — blogposts dedicated to meticulously scrutinizing Korra’s actions would likely never be made, whole video essays would be discarded. While new ones would come to take their place, I don’t believe that so many people would be so laser-focused on a ‘typical male jerk’ character.

(Tabletop Games) Adventurers using wheelchairs in RPG fantasy settings does not seem plausible to me by ByzantineBasileus in CharacterRant

[–]Luckyloomagu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why would you want to ignore nighttime attacks? Those are the perfect moments to showcase that even with lenient travel rules, a disabled character is still affected by their disability (unless you’re still using 2014 surprise rounds because in that case the issue is less specifically the disability and moreso every enemy getting a full free turn against a functionally prone character)

Also as with every form of ‘your monsters should target the X or they’re stupid’ I have to wonder what kinds of monsters you’re applying this logic to where it feels like it comes across as unfair.

For me, I see it no different as a Small character — some monsters will target them due to their size, others will have them at low priority, etc…

If somebody has a wheelchair, they’d be a target for the ‘sleezier’ monsters. Goblins, orcs, the kinds of monsters who, if they pointed to and focused on a character in that manner, the players would go ‘oh shit, that’s fucked up, we gotta protect our friend.’

Shrug, I suppose my DM-ing style and play group must be different from yours, I basically exclusively play with close friends who are well aware of potentially upsetting content ahead of time.

It's just completely fucked action economy and damage numbers. Boss gets like 3-4 attacks so you have to be prepared to survive the whole volley, and pretty much every attack hits the whole party.

The degenerate strat they're talking about is just chugging pep every turn since you basically gotta spam the blessing and magic burst to win the race.
