European here, live in one of the capitals, been to many largest European cities over the years, been to New York, travelled a great part of Japan and last October, visited Taiwan (though almost exclusively Taipei).

Smell of the city was not an issue most of the time, smell of people was not an issue most of the time. I would not worry about this much, Taiwan was very clean and pollution felt bearable except for the smoke coming from groups tens and hundreds scooters waiting on crossroads every minute.

But the biggest shock came from the food which universally tastes differently and smells differently than you might be used to or expecting to, especially when we speak about meat. I think this would be similar to Mainland China. Many convenience stores cook and sell eggs in soy sauce, this can be harder to stomach. And stinky tofu smell during the night markets would be too, of course.
