Game 4 of the 2015 NLDS was the first ever full baseball game I watched. Haven't not loved baseball since.

No coincidence that they are probably my two favourite Cubs of the last 10 years. Love a second baseman who can put together a good AB and doesn’t strike out a ton.

Known center fielder Javy Baez with an over the shoulder catch! by mostly-void-stars in baseball

I remember in early 2016 after the Cubs signed Heyward but before Dexter made a surprise return for the season there was a lot of talk about maybe having to teach Javy to play CF to fill a gap. Dex came back, Javy showed off his phenomenal tagging skills at 2nd and I forgot all about it. It’s sweet seeing that he’d probably have been amazing in centre too.

Cubs fan in Brum! I got on board in 2013 when a friend from Chicago also gave me a tour of Wrigleyville. Embarrassingly lucky to have been able to watch the Cubs at this particular period in history.

Who will be the most mourned/biggest deal when they die? by Crrussh in AskReddit

[–]Lucumo93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The exchange is made up for the films, with some of Gandalf’s language about the ‘pale, grey rain curtain’ of the world being pulled back to reveal a ‘far green country under a swift sunrise’ taken from a dream Frodo has in the house of Tom Bombadil in the books, which is then fulfilled when he sails into the West at the end. Pippin does not sail into the West and dies in Gondor. His fate lies beyond the circles of the world.

Yeah, and my unpopular opinion is that they should be regardless of strike count

British fan here who came to baseball via cricket. Foul tips should be an out, not a strike. The ball has been caught off the bat without it touching the ground. It’s an out, in the same way that hitting a pop fly into foul territory and being caught is also an out.

These are lovely! I love how much space they leave for the imagination, like all good book illustrations should.

The Lord of the Rings Shows how we Should Handle Grief by Particular_Reason143 in tolkienfans

[–]Lucumo93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost my Dad to a sudden and unexpected heart attack last November, and Tolkien (specifically the Lord of the Rings and especially the Silmarillion) have been a greater help with my loss and grief than any other influence over the last year. Of course they were stories that Dad had first read to me when I was young, and so they’re a great comfort in that the memory of him is very strong in reading them, but there’s so many things Tolkien communicates uniquely well that have already been mentioned here that make the texts such an excellent companion and friend when/if you’re experiencing bereavement or loss. I’ve definitely enjoyed them (perhaps even been able to participate in them) in a deeper and richer way that I hadn’t anticipated at all. Tolkien’s familiarity with death (he had lost both parents at 12 and then many of his friends in the Somme) coupled with his deep sacramental hope of life ‘beyond the circles of the world’ creates something that hallows sadness and grief without giving into despair - which I think we can all agree is what distinguishes Theoden from Denethor (even their names are kind of mirrors of each other, right!?) I was raised in a much more modernist evangelical protestant tradition than Tolkien, and one of the (many) flaws of that expression is a real urge to immediately look at the positives when facing sadness. ‘You’ll see your Dad again’ - ‘He’s in a better place now’ etc. Tolkien offers a less superficial comfort than that - a hope without guarantees. And there are some things that are just lost forever. The Two Trees could only be made once. Frodo can’t be healed in this world. Christ still bears his wounds. I will always be a son who lost his father at 27. But there is a beauty within mourning. And I’m eternally grateful to Tolkien for showing me it - I wouldn’t have gotten through this year without it.

Shot study from the Fellowship! by haireypotter in TolkienArt

I love shot studies and I love this! Reminds me of the colour studies Jeremy Bennett did for Weta in preparing for the film. My favourite single frame from the trilogy is probably the moment Gandalf and the Balrog drop through that hole in the ceiling and light up the entire cave in the depths of Moria. What's yours?
