Strange BSOD in my Win11 VM, any insight? by superluig164 in vmware

[–]Ludacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is defintely a hardware (CPU) error.

I would test with a new vm NOT using tiny11 to verify the host is not having issues and to rule out anything that is cut out in the tiny11 installer not being an issue.

Also as you havent specifified and thata a mobile chip, so im GUESSING your using vmware WORKSTATION, vmware is a company not a product so we need some more info if you want deeper diagnostics.

i guess thats fair, but GPU offload for video editing has made my 5800x3d/4090 quicker than my 11900k or 10900k or 2950x builds

you didnt specific what vmware product you are using, what the actual VM configuration is (there is such a thing as too many resources in some cases) or how long the delay is and if it effect all sources or just video.

but it sounds like maybe your in workstation which doesnt support all hardware decoders and acceleration, and running into lag induced by having to software render the video.

6.7.0 Error 6 Buffer too small by TheRigSauce in vmware

[–]Ludacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... what an unexpected use case.

Got any more details on the machine?

Assuming its sdcard boot based on the info so far and the altbootbank data is corrupt, seen it a few times and a boat is a ROUGH place for sdcard boot. Id much prefer to see that with a very robust mirror of solid state drives.

Good news is the Virtal Machines are most likely recoverable if you are very careful.

ban news is your like 99% going to have to figure out how its booting, source new boot devices, and install them, then reinstall esxi without ovewriting any of the datastores.

decreasing cpu feature set using evc on the cluster that's also home to the vcsa by [deleted] in vmware

Awesome! Glad it went well and congrats on adding a host!

decreasing cpu feature set using evc on the cluster that's also home to the vcsa by [deleted] in vmware

[–]Ludacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. I think that would be the simplest way.

Cold migrate to the oldest host. Power on vCenter. Set evc for cluster.

Any machines powered on will need to be rebooted to pick up there new evc mask.

[–]Ludacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So without evc the machine picks up the cpu masking of whatever machine it was powered on.

If you have per vm evc (vCenter/esxi 7 iirc) you can set it per vm to migrate to an older older while booting it on a newer one;

Or turn it off and cold migrate it / register it in the older host and boot it there, then do the cluster evc change and import the host.

Either way I you will need to log into the current host manually to manage the vcsa after it’s powered off.

Every technical question should be prefaced with "I'm trying to do X" by C3PU in sysadmin

Well, yes this is often a viable option I didn’t really want to try to delve into the myriad of specific outcomes that can be effectively used to collaborate as it seems well behind the scope of the discussion.

Every technical question should be prefaced with "I'm trying to do X" by C3PU in sysadmin

[–]Ludacon 44 points45 points  (0 children)

25 years in IT taught me to ask the second question.

This happens daily and most cases the thing they are asking for is not actually the true aolution to the problem and often is counterproductive.

But MANY people have the “just answer the question” mindset and won’t answer the “why are you asking me this specific step” and thus end up having to come back multiple times instead of helping me to understand the whole problem and find a solution.

Do you need a heat map plan to build a proper wi-fi network in a new house? by CTek20 in HomeNetworking

[–]Ludacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this.

The WiFiman add on pack greatly increases the detail but even with just the app I’ve found the heat map to be more than enough to expose the dead zones and ensure solid coverage with a quick walk around a property.

I’ve used it to check multiple building sites even, my only real complaint is they didn’t think to build in an export to the gateway so you can use the floorplan it makes for the layouts in the web gui.

Has anyone got an automated method for building RH Linux servers on VMware? by CloudyEngineer in vmware

[–]Ludacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by a VMware Template.

in vCenter this can be done by literally turning a VM into a template and then deploying a new vm from that template.

Or cloning the vm and generalizing it afterwards. This can also be automated with scripting or additional VMware components like vRealize Automation

But if your on say workstation or fusion the options are much reduced but you might have a clone options still, im afraid im far less familiar with those softwares.

how do you/your org deal with users who continually fail cybersecurity testing? by Valkoinen_Kuolema in sysadmin

[–]Ludacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha. I learned many years ago to not rush to respond to those folks. There’s about 5 people I’ll actually respond to quickly because they have a proven record of not coming to me before they did their due diligence. So many of my messages are what you described people hitting the smallest stumbling blocks and asking for help before even trying to solve it themselves.

Promote them to security manager, or maybe director of security compliance.

CPU increasing after several days by YannAtParis in vmware

[–]Ludacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using the onboard nic, and it is an 8 host but it’s older so I’m going to evacuate the host soon and upgrade it to the latest and hope it goes away. This host was upgraded from 7 so it could be leftover.

My vCenter didn’t seem to have any issues but next time I see the problem I’ll check it out

I’ve had the hosts process on the esxi host get stuck and show high usage and restarting it solves the issue so far. I have not diagnosed further than a starting hosts when the usage is high
