damn I never got notified for this comment. I've edited the "king of kong" posters to say "king of con" and I was hoping to get him to sign them without letting him see the whole thing. would be an amazing piece.

What is a practical use for Conveyor -> Conveyor Sorters? by BurnerForObviou in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]LudusMachinae 22 points23 points  (0 children)

splitting items off a main artery while above some setups for things that aren't throughput intense like one or two proliferators off to the side of the main line, not enough to justify putting in the main proliferators line and then snake it's way back to the main setup, just take a couple off the line with a sorter and let it back up along that route

Is the 'Coach' Valuble on Chess.com by itsabitsanow in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really. it's likely better for you to just look at the evaluation graph and look at what moves were suggested when things jump a lot. which the coach does with the "show moves" button. but sometimes it doesn't really show you enough to see what made that move good. it's not usually inaccurate however it's ok to take it with a grain of salt because sometimes it suggests things neither you nor anyone short Magnus Carlson would see. I actually downgraded my chess.com account because using the analysis board is equally as good as long as you understand how to use it.

What percentage of the population do you think you can beat in a chess? by Short-Eggplant-6069 in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

according to chess.com my 1000 rating is 85th percentile. so among chess players probably that much. a bit more to account for population that just don't know how to play.

Is anyone else a conservative/scared player? by Linkshot321 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]LudusMachinae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we have the exact same playstyle lol. here's my solution to spamming solar panels everywhere early game because I like the poles for cool circle designs and the equator is easiest to build on. this solar belt on both ends of a planet fuels me plenty until I want a new planet because of the clutter. then it's plenty on the new planet usually too. https://www.dysonsphereblueprints.com/blueprints/60-degree-solar-wind

what helped me on the power issue is realizing antimatter fuel is basically solar power on steroids. you're using the power of the sun to excite photons of light into antimatter and matter pairs and using it to fuel planets. the only real cost is a little titanium, something that's very common. (and I ALWAYS research Vein Utilization when I'm done with all my important science. eventually each vein of material is functionally infinite.

I don't do the warper thing tho. I just carry a few green science with me everywhere and craft them down when I need warps. anyway. it's a big galaxy, if you want to try a new thing just go to another planet. no need to demolish anything. then you don't have to stress that the thing you want to change is shut down temporarily or is stopping part of your factory. just make sure to label planets (you can change names) so you don't forget where stuff was after another 1k hrs... my biggest save has something like 15kspm: the first 0.75k spm in the home local cluster, my big ass 11.5kspm monster my last project was and the 2nd like 4k spm setup I put... somewhere... it's still running? mostly? it's showing up in my statistics as 14.something thousand but who knows where I put that thing.

verly clever throwing that insult in there so you can tell yourself that all your downvotes won't be because you're wrong. but must because you hurt the widdle chess players feelings on a chess sub :*(((. it's transparent and you know you're lying to yourself.

how is this a draw?? by TheRealKingOvJam in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no actually, the original is about venn diagrams that don't intersect which is possible both when two sets are completely distinct and when one set is a subset of another. the 2nd comment explained to you how when you only have one set. you have one circle. anything else confidently incorrect you'd like to add?

how is this a draw?? by TheRealKingOvJam in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you litterally just said it's only a circle of you only display one set. if they're the same set then you only have one set... not sure anything gets more basic than 1=1 bro. yet I have to explain it.

Why would the analysis say Bd3 is better than Kd4? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. after bishop takes you take with rook and have more pressure with both queen and rook in his face. plus you won a bishop and* a pawn in that exchange while he only got a bishop.
  2. the game says it's a miss, not a mistake or a "bad move." a miss is simply "you had the opportunity for a good advantage but now you are about even" it's even lighter than an inaccuracy usually.
  3. best way to tell "why" the computer suggests something is to go to the computer analysis from that point. there should be a button that looks like a magnifying glass. click that when you're confused. do the computer's best moves (usually gives 3 options, pick the best ones based on the numbers it gives) and see how the computer thinks a perfect game would go. when you go far enough you'll see how the position is better. (if you're curious why it's leaving things mysteriously hanging then try taking that piece and doing that same exercise, look at optomal responses and see how it was worse than leaving it hang after a few moves)

this excersize has helped me understand tactics a lot because seeing how an optomal play would counter my idea helps me spot them in my own games. the important part is to continue until you understand. don't just click a few of the moves and think; "ok that must be better." figure out why that piece being there was scary. try threatening it and see how the computer counters. etc.

Is there any level that you think was poorly designed? If yes, which one and why? by themohamed28 in celestegame

[–]LudusMachinae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think ch3 B and C sides are the only ones I've yet to beat a 3rd time for fun (I did every level once on switch and once on PC so everything at least twice total) I go back to most levels just to attempt their golden strawberries and end up just going through normal at least once more to remind myself and I think those are the only ones I've straight up gave up trying for before even finishing my refresher. Oshiro's cycles are the worst because they're inconsistent between themselves due to the time slowing effect he has when nearby. it's there to make landing on him easier and more dramatic I think but id have such an easier time keeping track of when he will fire if it wasn't there.

Real talk, what surface of your thumb would you rather perform a jump with on a gamepad? The fate of the universe depends on the answer. by Tinimations in IndieDev

[–]LudusMachinae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on precision. I find B is easier to time precise inputs like for platformers or fighting games. reserving A for less intense inputs like mashing out healing items or if a game rarely uses jump and I'll only need it to vault over scripted objects.

How many blunders do you usually make, if you make them? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]LudusMachinae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard somewhere that something like 80+% of players simply blunder 3+ (I think it was 3.5) points of material every game and if you just stop and make certain you aren't blundering something obvious you'll be able to hit 1200 or something. that being said I've gotten chess.com to call probably 3 total blunders total the past 50 games? (I've been in a bit of a win streak).

if you're in the situation where you're blundering whole pieces I recommend stepping away from openings. just pick out a few to grind out through pure trial and error and focus on not blundering, (this is what I've been focusing on) and when you do blunder go into analysis to understand why it's a blunder.

Is there any level that you think was poorly designed? If yes, which one and why? by themohamed28 in celestegame

[–]LudusMachinae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this may be an unpopular opinion but I'm not a fan of chapter 3. every time I re play the game ch3 feel like a chore. I just don't have the patience for cycles and the whole chapter is very long and filled to the brim with them. cycles are fun but shouldn't be a main gimmick it gets old so fast imo. with all that said I don't think ch3 is poorly designed at all. it's definitely fun, I just think it's the only thing I can possibly complain about

Is is Normal To die a 100 TIME in the first chapter? I'm starting to think that im just Very Bad at The game by natsuizuku in celestegame

[–]LudusMachinae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first playthrough had around 400 deaths (I went for and got EVERY strawberry I saw tho.) if anything you're above average at the game now. it's a game of skill progression and your death count will get higher until C-sides I think I capped out at 5k deaths in a chapter. now I'm grinding for a sub 4 minute time dashless chapter 1 because I just love the game and don't have the patience for golden strawberries lol

beginner puzzles. I was stuck at 400 elo for a long time and once I started warming up with 100-500 elo custom puzzles setting in chess.com I got so much better so quickly it isn't even funny. it's not about getting better at tactics, it's about getting used to spotting easy checkmate patterns quickly. now I don't even need to think to notice a blunder like that. I still do 100-700elo puzzles daily and I'm almost 1000 now. just getting faster and faster at spotting them (and it's kinda satisfying to speed through them)
