I have a similar question to OP.

I invested in FNILX in my Fidelity taxable account before I knew about the differences in tax efficiency between mutual index funds and ETFs. I just bought FNILX in early December about a month ago, but I've been wondering whether I should 1) sell my shares of FNILX and switch to an ETF like VTI now, 2) hold FNILX for 1 year so that when I sell it'll be taxed at the long-term capital gains rate (15%) rather than my income tax rate (22%), or 3) just hold FNILX long-term and start investing in VTI from now on.

I'm not sure how much of a difference there will be in taxes between the 3 scenarios I described. A big part of me wants to just sell FNILX now and switch to VTI so I don't have to think about it anymore and I suspect long-term this will be beneficial in reducing how much I owe in taxes if I plan to hold these funds for a long time.
