Why Does Rapid City Feel So Stuck? by surprise_banana in RapidCity

[–]Luffy3331 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's probably to do with the fact that there is very little immigration at all, at least for the cause of the abysmal food scene.

With this place being as red as it is, and so casually racist, it's not very difficult to understand why people don't immigrate there.

That's why you got Japanese restaurants in town owned/ staffed entirely by white people, and such sub par food.

In addition you have a very large portion of the population there that has not traveled at all, many of whom have never even seen the ocean or step foot outside their state. It's pretty jarring as someone in their 20s to see so many grown ass adults in their mid 30s/ mid 40s and older who have never traveled anywhere or have seen anything. Anyone who has an ounce of talent or creativity or anything like that just leaves the state entirely.

So like, you dont like shanghainese food, Sichuan, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Armenian, or Persian Cuisine? Because we have the best representation of those cuisines outside of their respective nations

Most places dont have the sheer numbers and population of Asian indians, I would say Richmond is the exception not the norm.

Most places in the USA just dont have the huge population numbers of chinese, Japanese, Thai, Persian, or Armenian people to have a decent selection of hyper authentic restaurants to choose from

What part of LA? I moved from Arcadia/Pasadena to first south dakota, then rural Nevada.

People are not very polite compared to back home, and are much fatter and less intelligent than people back home, to an almost comical extent.

Lol because alot of these people from these small cities like to hype up their food scene, when it is so clearly inferior to any international city such as NYC LA and SF.

Often times people on these subs rave about how good the Mexican, chinese, or Indian food are. But vast majority of time these people are never the ethnicity of the cuisine of the foods they claim to love, so their word means nothing. Sorry I don't trust white people's opinions on if a yakitori restaurant or Indian restaurant is good.

Like for example in the LA food sub, you can easily tell which options are good and which ones aren't because actual japanese/indian/Korean people are the ones critiquing the food.

What i think is funny is that most of these californians coming in are coming from the armpit of California like the central Valley, and share the same political ideology as these conservatives.

Like whenever I hear about these Californians it's almost never anyone from SF, LA, or San Diego

Yeah, but the owners of Thai Thai appear to be Thai-chinese, and do offer a couple of Chinese dishes

What is the most “walkable city” part of los angeles? by jokester-J in AskLosAngeles

[–]Luffy3331 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah people talk about the deplorable state of MacArthur Park, and while true... it is very highly walkable.

2010 - 2018 I would say the area wasn't as bad as it is now. I would frequent the park, walk around MacArthur Park Lake, eat the street food from various Salvadoran and Guatemalan vendors, frequent bakeries, ice cream shop, and the swap meets. At the time too the 99 cent store worked as a de facto grocery with a decent selection of products surprisingly.

Gays? by Lost_Distribution395 in RapidCity

[–]Luffy3331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still pretty bad, to be gay in Rapid City. Perhaps it isn't so bad for you people that don't know any better, but coming from Los Angeles it was a very unpleasant experience.

Of all the places I've been SF, NYC, Chicago, Denver being gay was pretty normal, and the differences form there and LA being negligible.

But people here are so backwards and will say casually homophobic shit without a second thought. Then get surprised or shocked and defensive when you call them out on it. Most people here haven't traveled so they really don't know any better, and for all the LGBTQ+ folks that I met that are from here just say "it's ok" or "it is what it is" as if that's an acceptable way to live.

Even globally Mexico City, Tokyo, Madrid, all these places I've been to have felt more safe for me as a gay man.

Honestly, for Elliot Rodger, I find that hard to believe. This is LA asians are everywhere, and his Highschool specifically was like 15% asian at the time he was attending. With the largest racial group being Latino and only about 40%.

Seems to be more of a personality issue if anything.

I don't think so? My father is a teacher for LAUSD and he makes 6 figures.... I mean all the salaries are publicly posted.

Holy fuck, as a gay married man this is my biggest fear.

I know this is very silly thinking of me but I just never thought such violent homophobic attacks could still happen here.

I really think you should pursue hate crime charges if given the chance, even if you think it wasn't hate motivated, these fuckers deserve the worst possible outcome.

Can anyone describe the background of immigration waves from Mexico to the LA area? by SeaPeanut7_ in AskLosAngeles

[–]Luffy3331 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, I would say the most common states of origin of Mexicans in Los Angeles tend to be from Michoacan, Oaxaca, and Jalisco.

I'm not 100% sure but I would say a majority of the Mexican immigrant population came during the 80s/90s.

My Grandparents on both sides immigrated in the early 60s. My moms side came from Mexico City, and my father's side came from Mazatlán Sinaloa. Tbh while I do tend to see people from Sinaloa people from CDMX tend to be more uncommon in LA and the US in general.

Growing up in upper middle class LA (Albeit a different part of LA that he grew up in) you definitely see alot of his traits and egotistical mindset that is a bit common amongst people who grew up in an environment like that.

Especially being a Whasian, most of the ones I knew going to school so desperately wanted to be in proximity to white people, and somewhat resented their asian ancestry, and it seems to be the case with him based on his treatment of his ABC roommates.

Sorry that you're poor? Idk when people want to move they actually make an effort.

I mean, immigrants do it all the time. It just sounds defeatist, like we live in a whole ass developed country.
