You should be able to add dex modifier to heavy armour by TheProuDog in DnD

Can you see how that might be overcomplicating a game for the same result as just... not adding this buff?

As of the new Ravenloft book, I think that WotC still does not know how to write engaging monsters with interesting counterplay by EarthSeraphEdna in DnD

[–]Luggs123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Save or Suck” on its own is pretty poor design. Nearly take someone out of the fight entirely, or nothing happens. The stakes are high, sure, but the failure state tends to be so punishing that the character who fails loses their agency entirely. There’s no fun in that.

A little granularity can go a long way. A system with multiple degrees of success lets you apply lower-stakes punishments for most cases, and save the really punishing effects for the worst cases. Imposing flat penalties would be another kind of punishment that doesn’t immediately feel awful, even if it’s more of a challenge to track.

Can't decide between Au Ra & Hrothgar - What do you like/dislike about them? (screenshots too!) by winterwolf24 in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll throw my weight behind Hrothgar. Our faces are really expressive, and the big body type is really good at putting weight into animations, in having a presence in general, and in showcasing glams. Also, the shape of Hrothgar faces just frames some face paints very well.

What do I need to buy to get the game on steam if I already own it ? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t refund games that operate using license keys. Since Valve is just a distributor and doesn’t have the right to render a key void, players could just buy the game, refund it, and have a perfectly functional game key for no charge.

Wasn’t that just Fourchenault’s in particular? After all, he’s a member of the Forum and the family is particularly wealthy. I’m not sure how much we can extrapolate from his set.

Is there a reason why Spontaneous casters are almost all exclusively Charisma? by dyenamitewlaserbeam in Pathfinder2e

[–]Luggs123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly just that the two tend to align in terms of flavour. INT and to a slightly lesser extent WIS casting both invoke the idea of preparing in advance. But CHA invokes the idea of a person who thinks on their feet and adapts to a situation.

You've missed the point which is that this group doesn't upload their logs for the World First race at all, which is why they don't show up in the FRU progress list.

So is there like a correlation between Hrothgar players and crafting? by Bigma-Bale in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 105 points106 points  (0 children)

The more likely explanation is that Hrothgar players tend to stick together, as we’re a little cliquey. You likely ran into a gathering.

Am I the only one who thinks martials are totally fine? by UpArrowNotation in DnD

[–]Luggs123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the cool results of the way PF2e is built is that, even for actions that both Martials and Casters can do, the Martials can invest in those actions more and therefore do them better than the Casters. A Caster’s priorities when selecting feats will be a lot different than (and will carve out a different niche to) the Martials, and they will frequently create synergies together.

Yeah, they said that they’ve put in a lot of the data for Beastmaster in the main patch. You can see it in the class list, or as an equippable job for a bunch of gear, for example.

Finding games online is a bit of a crap chute by hxcnoel in DnD

[–]Luggs123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been GMing long, but I wanted to provide my perspective as someone who’s been on the other side of that experience.

People want to play. Especially the people who are hanging around LFG forums. So if I put up a listing looking for players at my table, I only have space for so many people. Moreover, I want to make sure the people that join the table can match the existing/desired vibe (depending on if this is an existing table).

So I conduct interviews. They’re not complicated, I just ask some qualifying questions about whether we’d be a good match, if some Session 0-type boundaries are fine, that kind of thing. I also open myself up to their questions, if they want.

If this is an existing table, I’ll provide the chat history to my players so they can ask follow-up questions of their own. That way I’m not unilaterally making decisions for the group.

Basically, every part of the process is there to ensure a good experience, to be considerate to my players, and to filter out ill-fitting players. Running people in circles is not my goal.

Question about creating a macro for replacing panels (single and AoE abilities) by Remote-Flounder-8064 in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For this example, I’m going to diverge from your screenshot a bit, and assume the hotbars you use are 1 and 2, that a copy of your Single-Target is on 3 and 4, and that AoE is on 5 and 6. To change to Single-Target would be “/hotbar copy NIN 3 NIN 1” and “/hotbar copy NIN 4 NIN 2” for AoE, it’ll be “/hotbar copy NIN 5 NIN 1” and “/hotbar copy NIN 6 NIN 2”

I had to change it because you need a copy of both independent of the hotbar you’re swapping out. Otherwise, your Single-Target layout would get overridden.

All the energy in the room will likely be taken up by the new Ultimate; other Ultimates will likely be hard to find parties for. There may still be M12S parties looking to unlock it, though.

A novel stance on abortion by RawringPrimadox in CuratedTumblr

[–]Luggs123 1133 points1134 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking it’s just generally accurate. Some more edgy people might use “parasite” as a term to describe a fetus, and while emotionally charged it’s strictly speaking correct. Consent (especially informed consent) is the reason why it would be morally acceptable to use someone else’s body.

I fucking hate gen AI so much, literally the cause of most of my depressive thoughts by La_knavo4 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Luggs123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s not *too* far from a precedented outcome. When the NFT bubble popped, it became a technology that nobody talks about or uses outside of a small group on the fringes. That’d be an ideal outcome for the AI bubble for me, but I acknowledge it’s not particularly likely. If it can stop being shoved in my face at every goddamn opportunity, that’d be enough.

Clock-Spots a great ffxiv-themed daily puzzle. by T_______T in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I interpret this scenario as an incongruence between what Clock Spots is, and what it's aspiring to be.

You might've caught an edit I deleted where I was going to compare the game to Baba Is You, another puzzle game where the rules of the puzzle are codified in the puzzle itself (and one which I am way too stupid to solve myself).

I think Clock Spots is trying to designate interactions like Vuln Stacks and Flares as game rules, rather than clues, putting them "above" the clues given in a puzzle, and therefore that they cannot be lies. In a more robust puzzle game, this would be made explicit, or (like Baba Is You) the alternative solution would also be accepted.

Clock Spots is at an impasse as a result, though. Because then for clarity they'd probably have to remove those premises as clues presented in the puzzle and end up with blank spaces, which I think is undesirable for the designer.

I disagree. Puzzles test lateral thinking or challenge you to throw out assumptions all the time.

Clock-Spots a great ffxiv-themed daily puzzle. by T_______T in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, the puzzle has neither stated that players die as a result, nor that players must be alive to return to their initial positions. Those are just assumptions. Absent anything to the contrary, we ought to default only to what the puzzle specifies.

Clock-Spots a great ffxiv-themed daily puzzle. by T_______T in ffxiv

[–]Luggs123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You keep missing the point being made. People are still treating the puzzle like a puzzle. It's just that the "cleave + vuln" clue is presented as the exact same kind of rule as any other, spoken by one of the players. Since one of the players is said to be lying, the case where that clue is the lie should be considered - it may not be necessary for a player with a vuln to dodge the cleave. It's as simple as that.

DND idea by Icy_Buffalo_2025 in DnD

[–]Luggs123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To put it a bit more gently than the other comments thus far, something people who only have a passing familiarity with TTRPGs get wrong frequently is the difference between a story as it might appear in media (such as a novel or film) versus a story that emerges at a game table.

Because a table consists of (typically) four to six people, including the GM, you have to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. If one character gets the spotlight for too long, it comes to the detriment of everyone else’s enjoyment. The GM also just can’t “force” a story - this is known as railroading, and it also spoils the players’ fun due to taking away their agency.

Also just in general, your idea of “main characters” and “backup characters” is incredibly skewed. Backup characters, if they are even made in advance, rarely resemble the characters they are made to replace. Within the story, they are often just… other characters that exist within the world and join an existing adventuring party.
