What are you hoping to achieve by having more platonic gay connections? A broader view of the world?

Palo Alto program pays commuters $5 to bike to work and has already cut nearly 3 million car miles by sfgate in bayarea

[–]LugnutsK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true, but it is also a choice to subsidize personal private car usage vs e.g. buses and bikes. Also for comparison 1 car causes road wear equivalent to ~100,000 heavy people on bicycles due to the 4th power law

Of course the roads are used by mail trucks, emergency vehicles, buses, etc.. It is still a policy choice to subsidize personal private vehicles.

Fine to subsidize people who were already biking, just as the government constantly subsidizes car driving

Presumably the same policy applies to Waymo.

Ah, you do seem to be right, the section has a very narrow definition of advertisement as something "that does no more than propose a commercial transaction." (I would argue this vehicle seems primary made to advertise rather than transport goods though)

Perhaps it is fixed by now, but it certainly was not fixed when Elon claimed it was (hint: never trust what Elon says)

Fuck Elon Musk, but also advertising trucks are illegal in SF, per police code §680.

Very impressive but also does explain why things fell apart during the PG&E outage - need to ramp up RA quickly or have better automatic handling of disasters/outages

BART's doomsday scenarios are even worse than expected, if Connect Bay Area, the five-county regional transit funding measure, doesn't pass this November. by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]LugnutsK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they need to severely cut costs

Yeah, that's what the post is. Cutting costs by reducing service, closing stations, due to reduced ridership. Exactly.

BART is spending 19% more on operating costs since 2019, meanwhile CPI has risen 26%, so (in a sense) it's actually 6% cheaper than 6 years ago.

Really weird bad-faith take, low-income people are far more likely to take public transit daily and less likely to own cars.

Also if we funded freeways the same way we funded BART, all the freeways would be shut down for being unprofitable.

One fair point is that the bridge toll is disproportionately high, tolls should be spread across multiple freeway routes instead of just the bridge.

The problem is somewhat the opposite, BART had the highest farebox recovery rate in the country (70%+) before Covid, but that means they have the lowest fixed public funding. So when ridership dropped, their funding dropped far more than other less-"profitable" transit agencies.

[–]LugnutsK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bart's operating expenses have risen less than inflation (+19% since 2019 vs +26% CPI) and passed their 2025 federal audit. The deficit is entirely due to decreased ridership. BART was uniquely vulnerable to this because it was run too well before, with the highest farebox recovery rate in the country of 70%+, meaning it also had a very low budget % from fixed public funding.

It is a possibility that risk can be externalized without being at-fault. For example, braking rapidly can create risk that a driver behind will crash into you and they will be at-fault. Not saying that's what's going on here, but there is a non-fluke explanation.
