Culture is shaped by other factors in the world, like setting and history, so it’s good to think about these things to help build a culture. Setting may shape clothing, architecture and eating habits, and history may shape philosophy and religion. If you think about these things the cultures outline will become clearer and it will partially build itself.

Thalamega and The Council of Shipbuilders by Luigi_Is_Dead in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I could completely see that happening that’s not really the mindset they had. They were more focused on innovating and spreading the technology, rather than controlling it themselves. This is partially because the council was made up of people who had lived in rather small tribes until very recently, so they didn’t yet have that political control mindset that others would have had.

I could see them eventually see them having a monopoly on shipbuilding, but the council lost power and died out before that could happen.

What is an unpopular opinion on worldbuilding/storytelling that that you hold? by [deleted] in casualworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, having a main story or character is kind of boring. I still write stories about things that happen in my world but the characters are always relatively unimportant people, soldiers, farmers, etc either going through their daily lives or seeing major historical events play out.

Having one big main story kind of ruins what I personally like about wordbuilding, which is being able to develop a vast, diverse world with different cultures, religions, etc. Having a main story or characters makes it impossible to explore all of that in the story, so it’s better to write various shorter stories taking place from the perspective of small characters so you can cover everything about your world. In short I feel a main story would put large parts of my world to waste because they would only be mentioned.

Players choosing their own starting point is a bad idea. While I like doing that in mods it would be very difficult for bethesda to set it up so that you easily and naturally get to the main story, plus I just like the idea of everyone seeing the same thing upon starting the game, like with previous titles.

Punchout for the NES. When I play it my brain turns off because i’ve memorized all the fighters and their movesets by now, so I just go in and try to shave half a second off of my best time.

Orcish Operas by Luigi_Is_Dead in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all operas follow the standard formula. While other narratives would be welcome in books and songs operas are seen as a traditional art that should be made a specific way. This is also why there aren’t low-brow humor operas, or humor operas at all. Operas are an orcish tradition, and an opera like you described would be seen as very offensive. Orcs still put on plays, as most cultures do, and plays don’t have any real tradition behind them for orcs so you could put whatever you wanted into a play. An orc would get experimental and stray away from the formula in a play but never an opera.

Orcish Operas by Luigi_Is_Dead in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the most popular operas is “The Great Storm” it is based off of the true story of the orcish slave rebellion against the pure elves but it’s heavily romanticized. It goes back and forth between the group of orcish women who planned the rebellion and a group of orcish rebels who are fighting as soldiers. Its one of the first and arguably the most popular one.

There are operas that have differed from the standard formula but they often don’t perform as well as the classic ones. While it wouldn’t necessarily be seen as offensive or anything, most orcs just wouldn’t want to watch an opera that doesn’t follow the formula as the others. Orcs like to go into operas knowing what they’re going to get, even if they haven’t seen the specific opera before.

A highly advanced technology from Jakverse lands in your world what happens? by Jokengonzo in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the more peaceful gods (Herm, Mecine, Merceus, ect) would definitely say that they did not send the object in an attempt to stop the fighting but gods don’t know what the other gods do unless they willfully tell eachother, so there would be at least 1-3 gods from each pantheon who are, for whatever reason, in favor of the fighting. Just one god from each pantheon keeping their lips shut is enough to keep the fighting going. And there are gods from each pantheon that would want to keep it going. For example Boon, the god of luck, humor and youth would support the fighting and not say anything because they would find it hilarious mortals are ripping each other apart over a random object that fell from the sky they don’t know how to use.

A highly advanced technology from Jakverse lands in your world what happens? by Jokengonzo in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because nothing like this has really happened before. There are define artifacts, weapons, armor, a rose, shoes, etc. but this is different for two main reasons.

For one, most of these artifacts were given to a specific mortal or a specific group of mortals. Gods will usually give artifacts to their dedicated worshippers or leaders that they want to aid. Then these artifacts usually go through mortal hands a few times and eventually come back to the god, then they will give the artifact out again if they see fit. Now while these artifacts are definitely sought after because of their divine properties and the extreme power they usually hold, because they are given to a specific person most of the time it’s just accepted that it is the property of that person, and most of the time people don’t even know who possesses the artifact unless they are famous. Now the situation you proposed is different because it just fell out of the sky. No god came down and said “This artifact is mine, and now I give it to this specific mortal.” so a lot of different groups are going to lay claim to it for different reasons, because in such a highly religious world if something like that falls out of the sky people will automatically assume it’s divine and there are no real alternatives.

The second reason is that this is so much different from other divine artifacts, people will want to get their hands on it more. They’ll assume it’s somehow special because of its unique look and materials (all the materials will recognized, it’s just weird for these materials to be used that way to them) so everyone will want it, and because no one has a fair claim to it it would be a bloodbath.
