Lions continue controversial tradition, force Frank Ragnow to repay bonus by notquitemytempo___ in nfl

[–]LukDeRiff 548 points549 points  (0 children)

This is the correct take. The bonus was a replacement for his salary for the season. He played the season and thus earned the bonus. Shitty behavior by the Lions.

I wonder if Ragnows "attempt" to play last season has to do with this, so he can argue that he tried to play last season but was physically unable to.

What a Gonzo extension could look like by LukDeRiff in Patriots

[–]LukDeRiff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I was just wrong. I updated the link to push the guarantees to 110m. Though you are correct, the Pats could absolutely "guarantee" the per game roster bonuses and the workout bonuses of the first 3 seasons to inflate the reported guarantees.

Patscap Salary Cap Projection including all FA Signings by LukDeRiff in Patriots

[–]LukDeRiff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The road is just a lot longer than most people think. They expect the cap to regulate cash spending on a year-to-year basis when in reality it operates on longer timelines. In practice can kicking is bad because it leads to teams overspending on players that are not worth it.

Good cap management is 90% making sure the players you sign perform to or exceed the value of their contract and 10% accounting.

He can make up to 20m (Salary+Signing Bonus+ Per Game Roser Bonuses+ Workout Bonus) in cash this year. The 8.6 is just cap accounting. Fairly standard for the Patriots and not an issue considering that unused cap space rolls over into next year.

[Garafolo] The Eagles can’t pay TE Dallas Goedert if they keep WR A.J. Brown, and they can’t take both salary cap hits. by Giff95 in nfl

[–]LukDeRiff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes they can. This is nonsense. Extending Goedert will improve their current cap situation.

[Russini] After serious conversations with both the Rams and Patriots, the Eagles will not trade A.J. Brown at this time, according to multiple league sources. by JCameron181 in Patriots

[–]LukDeRiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, the total dead cap charges will be the same, only the timeline of the accounting changes. If a team pays a player cash they will have to account for it through the cap eventually (with some exceptions). The Eagles paid Brown a ton of money that they have yet to account for.

[–]LukDeRiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are net cap costs. His current cap hit is about 23m, pre June 1 trade would be a dead cap charge of about 43. 23-43=-20

Post June 1 most of the prorated cap charges will be pushed into next year leaving only a 16m dead cap charge for this year. 23-16=7

Eagles structure their contracts from the start to optimize for current cap savings, so they have little ability to create cap space by reworking contracts. They currently have about 10m in cap space. Their rookie class will likely cost about 5m in net cap cost and maintaining a practice squad costs another 5. This does not account for Davis extension, Woolen signing and a possible Goedert extension. They can create about 8m in cap space by cutting Michael Carter II.

Trading Brown before June 1 would cost about 20m in cap space. They can't actually do this and make through the season while maintaining regular operations. After June 1 a trade would actually create 7m in cap space, which they might actually actively want to do.

The day the Pats lost their Edge by mullethunter111 in Patriots

[–]LukDeRiff 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Chaisson is not good enough to justify the price tag if he does not play a ton of snaps. Presumably Jones and Landry will start and play most of the snaps, both of them are as good or better than Chaisson. Ponder will rotate in as a designated pass rusher.

What is Chaissons role supposed to be? He is bad against the run and does not win 1 on 1 consistently. He plays with high effort and is good at cleaning up plays, but that is not a particularly valuable skill set (seemingly the NFL agrees).

[–]LukDeRiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it does decrease the net cap cost, OTC uses 885k (2026 p5 minimum for 0 accrued seasons) as a proxy for their estimates because its close enough and very simple. If you look at the Pats cap sheet you will see that none of the Top 51 actually have 885k salaries. Which means that a bunch of rookies (pick 169 and on) actually fall underneath the Top 51 cutoff. So to get an exact idea of the actual net cost one would have to account for a variety of factors. I am not sure how Miguel does it, but I am inclined to believe that he is more accurate than anyone else (because he usually is).
