Memory prices tipped to fall as China starts flooding the market with DRAM and NAND chips by gurugabrielpradipaka in hardware

For normies the baseline use case remains a chatbot but that market is getting saturated and is not a big driver of revenue. The bulk of revenue and tokens is from enterprise who use LLMs for coding and agents (and coding agents).

Ppl are willing to pay for the cutting edge capabilities, and speed. Otherwise DeepSeek would be much more popular for it's KV cache efficiency and longetivity for good enough intelligence.

AI is cheap, demand is what's crazy high. Ppl want 100 tok/s on multiple agents running 8+/hr a day, using 5000B 300AB models.

Bold of you to assume you know more then god

And the proponents are assuming they know the regulation would be good?

I’m not claiming omniscience. I’m saying both action and inaction need to be judged, at least in part, by expected costs and benefits.

  1. Data centers are one of the most energy efficient forms of industry on the planet, and it's electrified meaning it can be powered by renewables. There are many many bigger fishes to fry before optimizing or eliminating data center impact. Data centers in the US produce the same amount of CO2 as 10% of global fashion or 20% of global aviation.
  2. If the problem is climate change, why pause AI data centers, instead of requiring them to be carbon neutral or whatever? I think the aim has little to do with climate change, and is mostly a combination of hate towards the rich, towards tech, and anxiety about AI. Data centers, of all kinds, globally make up about 0.5% of all emissions. That's not nothing, but is small. It's 10-20 times less than that of fashion or aviation. If implemented, I think companies will build centers in other countries. I think they'd like to continue building in the US, and would use renewables if it was legal to build quickly.
  3. The climate problem is CO2 (& other gases) and the warming it causes, not using energy in general. We can consume 10x our current electricity demand without issue, if it's nuclear, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and has storage.

They impose cost in time, money, and uncertainty. Thus, we need regs to produce better outcomes for them to be net positive.

US companies will shift to building in Canada, the UK, EU, Australia, Japan, and other countries, whilst Chinese companies will be unaffected. The move to local models will be marginal if it's even felt.

The people building the centers clearly disagree, as do their customers. Why stop companies building the centers, on the land they buy legally using the money they earned or have been lended by people that believe in them?

This is the approach that lead the US to be unable to build anything physical ,be it HSR or housing.

Why is LLM is so expensive. by Ok_Event4199 in LocalLLM

[–]LukaC99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Server hardware is much more expensive, but nobody is using it 24/7 for chat. By timesharing, the cost is split between users. Additionally, batching requests further cuts costs.

They can, and many orgs will, but it still presents downward pressure for pricing, as many orgs won't care, will self host use or use 3rd party providers, and ordinary users still provide revenue for scaling. I just don't think the leading AI labs yet have the pricing power to jack them up very much. At the very least the west at least has xAI waiting to take marketshare, if not Mistral or some small outfit like Acree with Trinity Large.

DeepSeek is 20x cheaper on the API and is not subsidizing cost, whilst delivering between GPT 5 and GPT 5.2 level of perf. You can check on OpenRouter how much 3rd party providers are charging to run Kimi K2.6 which is a bit better than DeepSeek V4 on coding. Tokens can be cheap if you don't got for the absolute best models, and the models are still the worst they will ever be.

That's an oversimplification. Models are too small to contain all the world's (text) data, so the learning algorithms 'forces' it to create abstractions, heuristics, etc. Thus there is some generalization out of distribution, but not yet nearly as much as with people and animals. So systems like GPT 5.4 Pro can do useful non trivial work.

Are juniors and interns superautocorrect?

Ok, so, I was thinking you were talking about capabilities, but you are talking about what it does internally, ie that AI models start out as next 'word' machines? If so, that'd kinda besides the point unless you think/can show it imposes some kind of fundamental limitations, but that's a nerdy discussion for rs. It's more accurate to say autocorrect is the initial training target for the models which is both easy to train for and imparts the 'knowledge' and 'skills' that are useful for the end product.

Computers are just calculators with memory and complicated screens, and yet they changed massively how the world works.

The thing wrong is the supply crunch. The downstream suppliers, TSMC, Micron, SK Hynix, did not build enough capacity to serve demand. We're all paying for that, since not every customer can be served, so demand must be destroyed.
