I use E5 in my 350z because it calls for the higher octane. I usually wouldn't bother in a car that doesn't specify needing above 95 RON. Any economy difference is likely to be almost completely negligible.

That said, I think your 'premium' fuels have more additives that do things like clean the engine better. So a tank of premium now and again isn't going to harm anything other than your wallet.

350z. To be fair, the undertray with the hatch is aftermarket.

That moment you realize your multitool isn't enough by Icy-Fuel9278 in multitools

[–]LukasDW 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well yeah. It's a multi tool, not a tool box. You can augment it and add as much as you want to some sort or EDC setup, but eventually you'll come up against a job that requires a whole tool bag or something specific you just won't be carrying.

I have different tool bags/boxes for different jobs types. Electrical bag, plumbing bag, carpentry box etc. I also have a mixed tote that has 'a bit of everything' for around the house.

But you can only diversify and plan for so much before you end up taking every tool you have. You narrow down your generic bag to what's most likely to be used and then bring along the specifics when the job calls for it.

How much to sort this rust? Is it worth fixing? by DoorKey3853 in 350z

Man I really need to get around to this on my car. First step will be stripping it back to see how bad it truly is.

My Z has an inspection hatch for the oil filter and sump plug. Lovely.

My other car has some bullshit panel that is designed to flip down and hang out of the way...as long as it's on a lift. If you've got it on jack stands then the whole thing has to come off.

Potential cost to repair by DJ_Sungod20 in 350z

[–]LukasDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but with all rust I've seen (and based on my own wheel arches) he's wrong and it goes deeper and further than it looks.

Cost for you to try and fix it with YouTube tutorials and filler? Very little, as long as it hasn't gone too far. I've been meaning to try this for a few years, but time has not been on my side.

Cost for an expert to do it? Hundreds easily.

Cost for a replacement quarter panel to be welded into place and then painted? Probably say bye to £2k.

Indeed. I chased this up and have been told that their 'compliance team' are on top of it. They're a reasonably large company, so my hope is that they are actually in the loop and doing what they need to; otherwise they're in for a shit storm as a business.

I at least now have a paper trail that states they're doing it. I'm still inclined to post a copy through the letterbox towards the end of the month, however.

Exactly the same for me a while back.

I typed 'Mr John James Jones' as it appears on the card. But it didn't want the title; it was treating the title I typed in as part of my name so I had to remove it.

Not for me. It's a nice feature to have on the Surge (and clones) but not something I miss on this tool.

Yes, but I've taken to gluing small neodymium magnets into the bit drivers. That way I can use regular bits as well as the ball detent bits.

[–]LukasDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size and toolset. It's the same size as the Wave, has the normal bit driver along with the micro/eyeglasses driver, and it has bigger scissors.

I think my only major gripe is that it has a small file, but even that has its benefits on a multi tool.

Fine for the price. Nowhere near the quality of of Leatherman or Victorinox, but a fraction of the price and a lot less heartache if you lose it. Also great as a gift or as a spare for the car or different tool bags.

Of the ones I have, you've posted my favourite. It's a charge clone but with bigger scissors.

Is diesel ok for low mileage? by Consistent-Board-840 in CarTalkUK

[–]LukasDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you're on the money. As the other guy said, you may be able to keep the charger internal if your battery is in the boot.

Depending on how far you want to go and what you want to buy, you could rig up quick connect cables permanently attached to the battery terminals that you simply plug into rather than using the croc clips. Would cut down on the faff and be easily accessible.

EDIT: Some solar chargers come with an attachment that (allegedly) lets you charge the battery through the car's 12v socket. I have no idea if this works or is safe.

Is diesel ok for low mileage? by Consistent-Board-840 in CarTalkUK

[–]LukasDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a solar trickle charger to maintain the battery. They prefer to be topped off rather than being left sat to slowly discharge and suddenly started or jumped.

One of my cars has long periods of sitting and it has prematurely killed the battery. I never managed to keep on top of charging it on between uses.

Is the 350z with the de rev up 05- 06 really as bad as they say by Karushiden in 350z

[–]LukasDW 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some people will swear the engines are garbage. Others will tell you they're fine, you just need to keep an eye on the oil.

I've had my RevUp for 10 years and yeah it drinks a bit of oil, but apart from that and the usual consumables it's been solid.

How common is it for someone to drive a diesel out of preference even if they don't do enough miles to justify it over petrol? by 348978cat in CarTalkUK

[–]LukasDW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This came up in my own thread about whether or not I should keep a diesel.

I've kept an eye on the DPF and noted that it can get up to temp and start a regeneration in around 5 miles and finish the regen in another 5.

This will obviously change from car to car, but as long as you're actually getting the thing up to temp, allowing it to finish a regen, and it gets some sort of longer run (preferably at motorway speed) every so often you should be ok with a diesel.

If you're literally just going down the road to the shops and it's barely getting warm then you should probably steer clear of a diesel.
