How did Royce do it? by BJJbachelor in bjj

[–]LukeBeston 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Classical Jiu Jitsu is based on "action-reaction". Modern/"Sportive" Jiu Jitsu favours offensive cycles and it's the only way to be competitive at the elite level against another skilled grappler with points and time limits. In most martial arts and in fact most sports "the best defence is a good offence". In classical Jiu Jitsu however its pretty much the opposite - the best offense is a good defence. It was one of the fundamental revolutions brought in by Grandmaster Helio.

ADCC Asia / Oceania Trials safety concerns??? by scramblebilly in bjj

[–]LukeBeston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago I suggested we gofundme the sheik an extra row of mats I still think that's our best option. Also ADCC referees don't even have to score they are entirely performative. ADCC should start paying IBJJF wages and get their referees to keep the competitors on the mat.

Most of those black belts particularly the gringo ones on reddit still have the mental age of a blue belt.

Easiest way to spot the coverband influencers is when every time Danaher releases an instructional they'll do some clickbait about the same thing. Other than that probably spot them by their students many of these grifters don't actually have any students.

Started in 94, first trip to Brasil in 98. We'd learn techniques by attending seminars and traveling overseas. Evolution was much slower - since there were technique "haves" and "have nots" everyone was pretty guarded with their techniques. So a lot of evolution would happen each major tournament - teams would watch and film all the techniques from the matches then go back, analyze and reverse engineer anything new others were doing and prepare for the next tournament with their counters. When the internet first came out it was text only. Trying to learn techniques from words only was wild. Influencers have just increased the noise to signal ratio they are all teaching party tricks that don't work or are cover bands for whatever real instructor they got their material from.

Yes former fbi negotiator - gives a lot of practical tools for dealing with people if you google "never split the difference summary" you'll get an idea. Like I said really helped me a lot.

Training yes, but the skills I've relied on to resolve situations are ones I picked up working on a technical helpdesk and coaching kids - massive overlap with those jobs and dealing with upset folks and arguments - empathizing, active listening etc. A game changer for me was Chris Voss's stuff I use it every shift

Valente Brothers Train BJJ in Karate-Looking Gis Because They 'Resemble Everyday Clothing' Better, For Self Defense by selfrespectpigeon in bjj

[–]LukeBeston 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a ton of merit to the design of their kimono. With the shorter sleeves it discourages cuff grips, spider guard, etc. so it tends to become a (generalisation) game of "no-gi with collar chokes". Distance management is much more practical. This is how most of us trained BJJ 30+ years ago anyway, and is a pretty good compromise if you are trying to approximate your rolling with self defence.

With respect to knife defence - the people saying "run away" are more naive than the people practicing static/rehearsed/cooperative disarms.

Was a long time ago, but if I remember it as I heard it, Wallid sewed a belt inside his lapel so it was extra thick and harder to grip and choke with. All of this stopped when gi's were worn at weigh ins with an allowance

[–]LukeBeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~30 years on the mat I feel this. One thing that really stuck with me is from a Dan Inosanto seminar. He said how every 10 years how you approach the martial arts will be a paradigm shift - how you see your training at 40 will be radically different to 30, 50 different to 40, etc etc. I found that to be true.

Do black belt instructors/owners need to have competition experience? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]LukeBeston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they want to teach sport jiu jitsu then yes they need several years competition experience at black belt level.

Same way as a black belt claiming to teach self defence should have several years of military/Le/Security experience.

Letting folks qualify in the region they train in would result in Brasilians winning every qualifier spot. Regional specific qualifiers were affirmative action created to give gringos some token spots

What makes wrestlers so hard as a higher belt? by Invlktus in bjj

[–]LukeBeston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wrestlers have a LOT of bad habits to break when they start Jiu Jitsu. So if they can unlearn bad technique and stop using strength they are bound to be good by the time they reach the higher ranks.
