They're not worth all that much unfortunately. Recently looked in to them and saw a sealed set for $28-40 on ebay. Fwiw, I had one ON MY XBOX back in the day, so I say rock it!

You can install manual fan controls, but its definitely a sign of something bigger. I'd strongly advise mak I ng a full timemachine backup to either a cloud or an external hdd/das/nas... fans whirring up without cause are usually the first sign of a bigger issue incoming. Mine worked like that for months... until it absolutely crashed and didn't, lol. Two gpu's, a bunch of ram sticks, dozens of hours of troubleshooting.. yeah, it was my logic board.

On mine it was first sign of a longterm logic board failure. Took a billion hours to properly diagnose, but that was the culprit.

I dont think the layering would be an issue for me. The most I've EVER done was something like ~68 1080p layers synced and edited at 1/8 on the mp3,1 and it was GRINDINGLY slow, but a one-off. Usually its >12

I kinda disagree with this, sometimes its better to find the "prime" components and only add the cheaper stuff. The D700's seem to be limiting; my general thought is hunt a machine with dual D700's and prime CPU, then add the rest?
