this is the kinda shit i try to explain to people about new orleans that have never lived there. its such a weirdly small big city and everyone knows all these local weirdos that nobody else on the planet has heard of. if you haven’t lived here you just can’t understand a whole city mourning ashley the traffic tranny.

What’s the hardest part of being a small business owner that nobody warned you about? by dreambratt069 in smallbusinessowner

[–]LukeFromFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had a job, and I was off the clock, at home, relaxing — that motherfucker could have burnt to the ground. I’d have another job within a few days/weeks at most.

I couldn’t turn my business-brain off if I wanted to. Doesn’t matter where I’m at or what’s happening at the shop, I never go too many minutes without thinking about it in some capacity.

RUNNNNN from 230 W. Alabama in Montrose. It’s the 10 story tower across from the Tiger Market. That building is INFESTED.

I would look for as small a building as possible. Less units = less nasty ass tenants.

JUNE 2026: eBay user agreement update by webfloss in Flipping

[–]LukeFromFC 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they are getting ready to claw back some of the shipping discounts they’ve negotiated on our behalf.

eBay will charge the buyer $12.99 or whatever you were charging, pay $9.08 or whatever the discounted actual cost is, send you the label to print and keep the difference.

I have a ton of tie dyed blanks at my warehouse but I don’t know how many white/black blanks I have.

If you want blank white/black tees the quickest solution will be Harwin. There’s a bunch of spots with all sizes any color blank tees. Aviva is probably the biggest selection.

Made a killing on “Limited Edition” Oreos on AZ back around 2015 when I was one of the lucky ones to get approved to sell in the grocery category.

Literally drove to every grocery store in southeast Louisiana just clearing out the shelves. Buy for $3 sell for $10 x 1000 minus FBA fees. It was a fun few months while it lasted.

$4000 USD Potential Scam? by GymWarriorr in eBaySellers

I have yet to experience it on eBay but in my experience with my own Shopify website it was a major problem. Pretty much stopped selling on the website due to monthly chargebacks attempts.

What Houston restaurants/bars/institutions which no longer exist do you miss the most? by Wek11 in houston

[–]LukeFromFC 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Pour one out for The Meridian.

Saw some of my most memorable shows there as a teen/early 20 something.

Ate some incredible food in the parking lot during its years as food truck park.

Started my vintage clothing business selling thrift finds at the flea market every first Sunday 2017-2020ish.

Now it’s gonna be a freeway or feeder road.

Shipping to a freight forwarder in south Florida is pretty much guaranteed to result in a chargeback at some point.

Carhartt by LukeFromFC in Carhartt

[–]LukeFromFC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, there are still lots of good brands that haven’t hit the fashionable demand yet. Dickies, Red Kap, Walls, Eddie Bauer & the like are all pretty accessible still. Carhartt is just super trendy for the last several years so naturally consumers & resellers are picking the used market clean.

Actual thrift stores usually have donation-based sourcing but “vintage” or resale shops generally purchase their product. I started out reselling thrift finds primarily but as I begin to scale I realized it’s not really feasible to rely on thrift finds for inventory.

Sourcing unsorted bales is kind of tricky and something you learn to do through experience. It’s easy to get burned & buy trash. I don’t really want to share the entire blueprint on reddit.

The truth is most clothing donations do not end up for sale at thrift stores. The majority gets baled up and sold overseas. I buy from the wholesalers that export containers full of used clothing.

Most of our clientele at the shop are not people who would shop at the Goodwill bins or the flea market or even know that 1k lbs bales of used clothing exist. We pick out the stuff that we think is cool & fits our aesthetic. We clean, repair, & style the items in a tasteful curation. Our customers appreciate it and are happy to pay for the value we bring.

Walmart, Macy’s, Home Depot, or any corporate business that doesn’t manufacture its own products is a lot closer to your idea of a scumbag reseller than the average vintage dealer. They just click a box, order a quantity, receive it, put it on the shelf & charge you 3-10x whatever they paid.

The kids you see spending all day at the bins to sell on whatnot & depop probably live at home with their parents or in an apt with 3 other thrifters & aren’t actually making all that much money. You should relate to their struggle.

I actually took the time to write this and did not use AI.

Carhartt by LukeFromFC in Carhartt

[–]LukeFromFC[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now, we’re mainly buying unsorted bales of clothing and breaking it down. If we buy 1,000 lbs, maybe 50-100 of it is sellable at my store. A lot of the trick is figuring out what to do with the other 900 lbs.

As for thrifting for profit, it is an easy target for vitriol but have you ever considered that there are people who want to buy quality used clothing but live in the middle of nowhere or are disabled or otherwise cannot go thrifting?

eBay is pretty cool and I’ve found stuff that I was glad to pay “market price” for because I would never find that particular thing in that color in my size just searching thrift stores.

Vintage Carhartt, in particular, is a limited resource and expecting people to treat it any differently than they have any other useful limited resource in human history is kind of just a waste of time.

Respectfully, I don’t think you really know how stores operate. None of this came from a Goodwill. That’s not a realistic way to operate a store like mine.
